After Jesus fed the multitudes in the wilderness with five loaves and two fish, he directed his disciples to gather up the leftover fragments, so that nothing would be wasted. In biblical parlance, the Word of God is frequently likened to bread, so, as is widely recognized, the miracle story applies to the Ministry of the Word, the stewardship of God's mysteries. Part of the author's ongoing effort to reintroduce by way of Year D (2012) a body of texts omitted by the popular Revised Common Lectionary, Waste Not the Fragments enlarges on the brief commentary begun in Chapter Four of that proposal, while inviting the broader church to both recognize the robust role these texts have played in the broader and deeper Christian tradition and to articulate a fresh understanding of these texts for the Christian Church of the twenty-first century. In this volume, the texts suggested for Advent are discussed in detail with the ultimate aim of preaching and putting them back in circulation for the spiritual resources and insights they provide, the worship they inspire, the direction for faithful mission they offer. No doubt, the miraculous feeding was a momentous feast indeed. Preaching Year D texts, however, offers the preacher fresh inspiration and opportunity for wise and faithful stewardship of the Word, for humble and simple obedience to Jesus' command to his disciples in its aftermath of that miracle: that not one word from God, not one fragment from the feast, be wasted.

This series of sermons, one each on the six chapters of Paul's Epistle to the Galatians, follows the model of text selection-one chapter per week-prescribed in the historic Westminster Directory. Preached over the course of the six Sundays in Lent (2005) as part of an interim pastorate, Slemmons chose this method as a way of covering large portions of Scripture with some thoroughness over a relatively compressed period of time. An example of what he terms in the Introduction "reiterative exposition," these sermons were preached in conjunction with his designing Year D, a lectionary expansion proposal that calls for, among other things, a greater role for lectio continua and/or semi-continuous methods of text selection.

What has faith to do with esthetics? What role has poetry in devotion and worship? These poems, or devotional responses to the Scriptures (lectionary passages) that inspired them, represent one preacher's oblation, an artless offering of adoration, confession, wonderment, and praise. Neither esthetic creation nor ecclesial proclamation, at times homely, at others sublime, these poems sojourn in hope toward "a better country, that is, a heavenly one."

The Secret of Salix Babylonicus is a story of healing, hope, and perseverance for the bereaved and the brokenhearted, the persecuted and the walking wounded. Grounded in the wisdom of the prophets and the psalms, watered by the spirit and the faith of the gospel, this parable of the weeping willow will lead those in need of compassion, catharsis, and pastoral care to their very source.

Groans of the Spirit constitutes a rousing challenge to mainline churches and their practice of preaching. In this inventive work, Timothy Slemmons calls preachers beyond the formalism of the New Homiletic, and beyond the ethical proposals that have arisen in the frustrated struggle to transcend it, and toward what the author calls a ""penitential"" (reformed) homiletic. Although one often hears of the need to preach "the whole counsel of God," few resources have seriously and specifically attempted to assist the preacher and planner of worship to do just that--until now. Year D makes the case for the need and promise of supplementing the Revised Common Lectionary with a fourth year of lections and arranges many previously excluded biblical texts in an orderly, one-year preaching plan.
