These poems reflecting on my experiences with Russia are a sequel to "Tolstoy's Lament", published in English and Russian in St. Petersburg in 1994. The poems for "Lament" are based on five trips to Russia beginning in 1983 at the height of the cold war and the nuclear threat, and continuing through the advent of glasnost, perestroika, and the 1991 coup. Some had not been translated into Russian, and others were written after that volume was published. And still others have little to do with Russia, but many Russians may find them worthwhile.

Tom Greening is a wonderful role model of an elder, poet, philosopher, and educator who shares personal, honest, and lyrical contemplations on later life issues. The poems in this collection grew out of his serving as a training director at AgeSong, his psychotherapy practice, and his own aging. With wit and humor, Dr. Greening guides us through many issues faced by elders, including those often not discussed. Through the poems, elders and those who love elders will be challenged and comforted while developing a deeper understanding of the aging process.

I wrote the first five of these poems over the years about my experiences growing up in Leonia, New Jersey, and later going to our 25th high school class reunion in 1973. I hesitated sharing them with my classmates because I mainly wrote them for myself and they are rather personal and not always very cheerful. But I decided the poems belong to my classmates as much as to me, so I distributed copies at our 45th reunion in April 1993.

This delightful, whimsical, and often profound book depicts the legendary wise fool Nasreddin as a modern psychologist dispensing astute and ludicrous advice to gullible seekers. The exquisite illustrations come from the hand of Idaho artist Linda Hawkins. Nasreddin Hoca or Nastradin Hoxha or Nastradini is a 13th Century historical figure of philosophy and humorous story telling. He is claimed by many cultures and ethnic groups but he is especially associated with Turkey. Each summer the "e;International Nasreddin Hodja Festival"e; is held in AkAYehir, Turkey. Nasreddin is a teacher, savant, clown, jester, Zen master, guru, fool. He could be a cousin of Alfred E. Newman, whom you can visit in Mad Magazine, and Mark Twain, who wrote light-hearted commentary on human foibles. Although Nasreddin (with his faithful donkey) first lived, taught, and made a fool of himself and others many years ago, his spirit lives today. He has come back to us because he sees how badly we need his idiot wisdom. He has become a psychotherapist, an ominous threat to troubled seekers, an embarrassment to the profession, and perhaps a source of unexpected enlightenment.
