Sinclair's primary purpose in describing the meat industry and its working conditions was to advance socialism in the United States. My endeavor has been to tell a simple story, preserving as closely as possible the spirit and feeling of the original. I have tried, as it were, to take the play to pieces, and build a novel out of the same material. I have not felt at liberty to embellish M. Brieux's ideas, and I have used his dialogue word for word wherever possible. Unless I have mis-read the author, his sole purpose in writing LES AVARIES was to place a number of most important facts before the minds of the public, and to drive them home by means of intense emotion. If I have been able to assist him, this bit of literary carpentering will be worth while. I have to thank M. Brieux for his kind permission to make the attempt, and for the cordial spirit which he has manifested.

I am telling the story of Sylvia Castleman. I should prefer to tell it without mention of myself; but it was written in the book of fate that I should be a decisive factor in her life, and so her story pre-supposes mine. I imagine the impatience of a reader, who is promised a heroine out of a romantic and picturesque "society" world, and finds himself beginning with the autobiography of a farmer's wife on a solitary homestead in Manitoba. But then I remember that Sylvia found me interesting. Putting myself in her place, remembering her eager questions and her exclamations, I am able to see myself as a heroine of fiction.

Ten years ago, when I was a student at college, I fell a victim to a new and fashionable ailment called "la grippe." I recollect the date very well, because it was the first time I had been sick in fourteen years-the last difficulty having been the whooping-cough. I have many times had occasion to recall the interview with the last physician I went to see. I made a proposition, which might have changed the whole course of my future life, had he only been capable of understanding it. I said: "Doctor, it has occurred to me that I would like to have someone who knows about the body examine me thoroughly and tell me how to live." I can recollect his look of perplexity. "Was there anything the matter with you before this attack?" he asked. "Nothing that I know of," I answered; "but I have often reflected that the way I am living cannot be perfect; and I want to get as much out of my body and mind as I can.
