Novellerne i Verner von Heidenstams "Karolinerne" udspiller sig før, under og efter Store Nordiske Krig (1700-1721). Den første fortælling, "Den grønne gang", skildrer branden på slottet Tre Kronor i 1697. Den sidste foregår efter krigen. Novellerne handler alle om Karl 12. og hans mænd. Bogen blev oprindeligt udgivet i 1897.Verner von Heidenstam (1859-1940) var en svensk poet og forfatter. Han var en af frontfigurerne i den litterære reaktion på den naturalistiske bevægelse i Sverige og forkæmper for en renæssance, der skulle bringe det fantastiske, det smukke og det nationalistiske tilbage i litteraturen. I 1916 modtog von Heidenstam Nobelprisen i litteratur.
