The Torrent is a novel written by the Spanish author Vicente Blasco Ibez. The story is set in early 20th century Valencia, Spain, and follows the life of young Amparo, the daughter of a wealthy landowner. Amparo is a beautiful and spirited young woman who is engaged to a man she does not love. She longs for freedom and adventure, and her desires are awakened when she meets a charismatic anarchist named Julin. As Amparo becomes more involved with Julin and his political movement, she begins to question the values and traditions of her privileged upbringing. She becomes determined to fight for social justice and the rights of the working class, even if it means sacrificing her own happiness. The novel is a powerful exploration of love, passion, and social change in a time of political upheaval. It delves into the complex relationships between the ruling class and the working class, and the struggles of those who seek to challenge the status quo. The Torrent is a timeless story that continues to resonate with readers today.Don Andrs, her advisor, commented upon the change with a gloating ""I told you so."" What had he always said, when doa Bernarda, in the confiding intimacies of that friendship which amounted almost to a senile, a tranquil, a distantly respectful passion, would complain of Rafael's contrariness? That it would all pass; that it was a young man's whim; that youth must have its fling! What was the use? Rafael hadn't studied to be a monk! Many boys his age, and even older ones, were far worse!... And the old gentleman smiled, for he was thinking of his own easy conquests with the wretched flock of dirty, unkempt peasant girls who wrapped the oranges in the shipping houses of Alcira. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
