Escrita en 1919, al finalizar la contienda mundial, Los enemigos de la mujer cierra la trilogía que Blasco Ibáñez escribió sobre la guerra, iniciada con Los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis, y seguida por Mare Nostrum. Sin llegar a la intensidad ni el dramatismo bélico de las dos primeras entregas, la novela muestra una cruda descripción en la que el juego y el dinero son los únicos horizontes de una élite rentista herida de muerte por las revoluciones y la guerra.

Los Muertos Mandan (1909).El protagonista de esta historia es Jaime Febrer, el heredero de una familia mallorquina de alta alcurnia y florido linaje, que está completamente arruinado. Se ha encargado de dilapidar la exigua herencia que recibió y ha de encontrar una solución que evite que la buena fama de la que disfrutan los Febrer en la isla quede por los suelos. La única solución posible pasa por pactar un buen matrimonio con una heredera que ansíe la reputación del apellido Febrer y que pueda rellenar las arcas de esta familia. ¿Quién contraería nupcias con un joven pendenciero con fama de mujeriego y sin blanca? Sólo una chueta, una joven de familia judía, tan mal vistos en la Mallorca de entonces. Febrer pide la mano de la joven pero sus "muertos" hacen que se arrepienta de haber querido mezclar su sangre con la de una judía y, asustado, huye a Eivissa para refugiarse en una pequeña torre que todavía forma parte de su parco patrimonio. Allí se verá obligado a comerse su orgullo de señorito y aceptar la ayuda de un peón para sobrevivir, y terminará enamorándose hasta los tuétanos de la hermosa hija de su benefactor. De nuevo los "muertos" de Febrer volverán a hablar para quitarle de la cabeza la sola idea de casarse con una mujer de tan baja estofa.
