Blasco Ibanez roman "De fire ryttere" er en grum og grusom skildring af 1'ste Verdenskrigs rædsler. De voldsomme skildringer af tyskernes grusomhed gjorde, at udgiveren, da bogen udkom i 1927, følte sig foranlediget til, at bringe en anmærkning i bogen, som i nogen grad tog tyskerne i forsvar. Udgiveren placerede sig således i anmelderens sted, hvilket er højst usædvanligt. Vi har fjernet anmærkningen fra selve bogen, men bringer den her i sin fulde form:(De følgende Skildringer bærer det stærke Præg af, at den spanske Forfatter i Krigen ensidigt har taget Parti mod Tyskerne. Det er svært for upartiske Læsere at forstå, at civiliserede Mennesker har kunnet hære sig ad, som han skildrer. Forfatteren har ganske vist næppe været Øjenvidne til disse Rædsler, men af denne Grund kan man dog ikke bebrejde ham den Sikkerhed, hvormed han Udtaler sig. Navnlig i Krigens første År blev de neutrale Lande oversvømmede af Tryksager, der i Form af officielle Retsakter, Forhør og edelige Vidneudsagn gav Meddelelser om Rædsler, ved Siden af hvilke Ibanez' Skildringer blegner. Franske og belgiske Beretninger om Tyskernes ville Udskejelser under Invasionen, tyske og østrigske Skildringer af Russernes barbariske Råhed i de østlige Provinser og Galicien samt om de besatte vestlige Landsdeles uhørte Skændselsgerninger mod de enkelte fjendtlige Soldater o. s. fr.Under Krigen læste vi neutrale om disse Rædsler og troede på dem, efter Krigen skulle Forbryderne straffes, men om disse Straffedomme hørte vi lidet eller intet; det kunne tyde på Overdrivelse. Der er dog næppe Tvivl om, at der på alle Fronter af Individer af alle Nationer er begået forfærdelige Ting, der berettiger til Skildringer som de følgende Blades, fordi de enkelte Optrin virkelig har fundet Sted.
