Tutto ha inizio con un testamento. Un milione di lire che Anselmo lascia in eredità alla figlia Felicina.Felicina, ancora giovane, viene affidata alla tutela di sua zia acquisita, Livia, vedova a meno di trent’anni. Il rapporto tra le due, invece di sbocciare, si incrina indissolubilmente. L’interesse comune per un giovane medico creerà dell’astio, un risentimento tossico e velenoso, di quelli che proliferano solo tra persone che vivono sotto lo stesso tetto. In questo romanzo di intrighi e tradimenti si intravede un Ottocento decadente e contraddittorio: “Fiammella spenta” accontenterà chiunque voglia affacciarsi sulle ipocrisie di una società sull’orlo del cedimento.Vittorio Bersezio (1828-1900) nasce a Peveragno, nel cuneese, da una famiglia benestante e di tendenze liberali. Sebbene laureato in giurisprudenza, coltiva fin da giovane una forte passione per la scrittura, tanto da esordire come autore di teatro già nel 1842, con "Le male lingue". Attivo sia in ambito drammaturgico che narrativo, nel 1854 assume la direzione del Fischietto, importante periodico satirico. L’attività giornalistica rappresenta d’ora in poi il suo impegno principale, espresso con la fondazione di un proprio quotidiano – La Gazzetta Piemontese – e portato avanti in parallelo con la politica (nel 1865 è infatti eletto deputato). Profondamente influenzato dalla letteratura francese di Dumas, Balzac e Hugo, ma anche dal romanzo sociale di Zola, Bersezio è noto soprattutto per la commedia "Le miserie 'd Monsù Travet" (1863).
