Beskrivelse (fra bogens forord):Det er altid med stor spænding, man som frimurer åbner nye kilder til endnu mere viden om frimureriet og dets inderste væsen. Med ”Frimureriets betydning” lader W. L. Wilmshurst os på ingen måde tilbage uden eftertrykkeligt at have indfriet forhåbningerne til hér at få noget substantielt at vide.Nok er sproget tydeligt af en vis alder. Det er dog på ingen måde nogen hindring for, at W. L. Wilmshurst giver læseren om ikke ”råt for usødet” så i alt fald en stadig frisk og relativt utilsløret fornemmelse for og indsigt i frimureriets inderste væsen. Forfatteren falder ikke for fristelsen til at afsløre mere, end godt er i retning af præcise gengivelser af ritualtekster og rituelle handlinger etc. Den indviede er dog alligevel helt med på, hvor langt man er nået i teksten, og den uindviede føler sig reelt og fint oplyst.Når man åbner en bog om visse hermetiske kundskaber, hvis samtid er at finde i det 20. århundredes første kvartal, så er forventningerne til forfatterens åbenhed og evne til nytænkning inden for særdeles traditionsbundne sfærer nok ikke umiddelbart de største. Dog overraskes man. Her er stof til den personlige eftertanke. Her er inspiration til adskillige instruktioner i logen. Ja, selv den garvede instruktør vil her kunne finde materiale, der nok kan sætte nyt lys på en allerede affattet tekst til Brødrenes oplysning.Jeg er overrasket! Jeg er oplyst om facetter af frimureriet, som jeg ikke hidtil havde stiftet bekendtskab med. Som indviet sidder man tilbage med en umiddelbar lyst til ”blot” at bruge forfatterens fem kapitler som instruktioner i logen. Hertil er de nok lige det længste – men de kan bearbejdes, hvorefter der ikke er nogen undskyldning. Alle Brødre bør læse bogen – enhver kommende eller nyoptagen bør gives den i gave. Uindviede kan også være med – der er stor inspiration og viden at hente på de følgende sider.
