"Man kann die Geschichte der französischen Kunst als den fortwährenden Kampf zweier gewaltiger entgegengesetzter Strömungen auffassen: der germanischen, die auf Natürlichkeit, charakteristischen Ausdruck, Gefühlsinnigkeit gerichtet ist, und der lateinischen, bei der bald die Linie, bald die Farbe den Vorrang behauptet, die aber immer auf Schönheit der Komposition und pathetische, oft ein wenig theatralische Bewegung ausgeht. Das nordische Element überwiegt im Mittelalter, es erreicht in den ergreifenden Statuen der gotischen Bildhauer eine gewaltige Höhe und klingt in der naturalistischen Bewegung des fünfzehnten Jahrhunderts mächtig aus. Dann aber erobert die romantische Strömung in unaufhaltsamem Siegeszug das ganze Gebiet und herrscht hier fast ausschließlich bis ins neunzehnte Jahrhundert hinein, am stärksten unter Ludwig XIV., wo die niederländische Kunst fast wirkungslos an ihr abprallt. Daß unterm ersten Kaiserreich Malerei und Skulptur durchaus klassizistisch waren, ist bekannt. Aber auch die romantische Bewegung, die doch als Reaktion dagegen entstand, hat mit ihrem theatralischen Pathos und ihrer Vorliebe für den Süden und den Orient etwas durchaus Romantisches. Veronese und nicht Rembrandt war das Vorbild des großen Delacroix. Ungefähr um dieselbe Zeit aber entstand im Anschluß an die englische Kunst und zum Teil unter ihrer Einwirkung eine neue Malerei, die nicht auf leidenschaftliche Gebärden sondern auf Tiefe und Echtheit des Gefühls, nicht auf schöne Linienführung sondern auf Wahrheit des Eindrucks, nicht auf rauschende Farbensymphonien sondern auf Beobachtung der Licht- und Lufterscheinungen ausging."
