Welcome to an in-depth study of John 4, focusing on Jesus' visit to the Samaritan town of Sychar, where He encounters a woman at the well and engages her in one of the most captivating conversations you will ever read in the Bible. The end result is that both the woman and her fellow townspeople come to believe in Jesus as Savior, King and Living Water.Best-selling author Wayne Davies provides a compelling analysis of how Jesus reveals His true identity to this outcast woman in a way that changes her heart and her life from the inside out. The woman is so enthralled with Jesus that she leaves her water jar at the well and heads into town to tell the people she has just met the Christ, the long-awaited Jewish Messiah! After spending time with Jesus, many other Samaritans also come to the conclusion that this Man is indeed the Savior of the world. There is no other account in the gospels quite like this one. Only in John 4 do we see an entire group of people come to faith in such a short period of time. And it happens to the despised Samaritans! In this book, the author answers two questions critical to a proper understanding of the text: Question #1: What does this passage teach us about Jesus?Key chapters cover the meaning of the three names for Jesus found in John 4: Jesus as "Savior," Jesus as "King" (the Christ/Messiah), and Jesus as "the Living Water." Each of these titles is a wonderful manifestation of the uniqueness of the one and only Son of God. Come and learn about the incomparable glory of Jesus as revealed in the text of John's inspired account.Question #2: What is our response to this teaching?John wrote his gospel so that we would "believe" that Jesus is who He said He was. But what is biblical faith? And how do we know if we have genuine faith rather than counterfeit faith? Through use of parallel passages, the author unpacks the meaning of both saving faith and non-saving faith, so you'll be able to "examine yourself" (per 2 Corinthians 13:5) to determine whether you are a true believer."Jesus: Savior, King, Living Water" is Part 2 in a series of Bible studies on the Gospel of John. Part 1 was published in 2015 as "Jesus: Who He Is, What He Did and Why It Matters" and covered chapters 1, 2 and 3 of John's Gospel.
The World English Bible (WEB) is a modern English translation of the Holy Bible. It is based on, and is an update of, the American Standard Version (ASV), which was published in 1901. A custom computer program updated the archaic words and word forms to contemporary equivalents, and then a team of volunteers proofread and updated the grammar. The New Testament was updated to conform to the Majority Text reconstruction of the original Greek manuscripts, thus taking advantage of the superior access to manuscripts that we have now compared to when the original ASV was translated. The style of the World English Bible, while fairly literally translated, is in informal, spoken English. The World English Bible is designed to sound good and be accurate when read aloud. It is not formal in its language, just as the original Greek of the New Testament was not formal. The WEB uses contractions rather freely. James M. Gray (1851-1935) was an American Bible scholar, school administrator, editor, preacher, and poet. Born in New York City and reared in the Episcopalian Church, as a young man he prayed, "God be manifest to me a sinner." Known as a gracious and well-beloved Christian gentleman and scholar, Dr. Gray dedicated his entire life to communicating the Bible through speaking and writing. For 16 years he pastored the Reformed Episcopal Church in Boston. Dr. Gray championed the cause of Christ at Moody Bible Institute for 43 years as a guest lecturer, dean, president (succeeding D.L. Moody and R.A. Torrey), and editor of Moody Monthly. He authored 25 books and his expositions of the Word blessed nearly 20,000 students. Amazingly, however, Mr. Gray made this confession about his early years as a pastor: "For the first 8 or 10 years of my ministry, I did not know my English Bible as I should have known it, a fact to which my own spiritual life and the character of my pulpit ministrations bore depressing witness." How did he overcome this problem? Thanks to a providential encounter with a layman, he learned a new way to read the Bible that revolutionized his approach to Bible study. In How to Master the English Bible, Mr. Gray reveals this simple method. By reading this book, you will discover why he later proclaimed, "To think that an ordained minister must sit at the feet of a layman to learn the most important secret of his trade!"
