Peter Marmot þráir meira í líf sitt en að vinna í kolanámu föður síns. Þegar hann heyrir af anda, sem býr í skóginum og getur látið óskir rætast, fer hann að finna hann. Heppnin er með honum og hann fær allar sínar óskir uppfylltar. Ekki líður á löngu þar til Peter finnur fyrir mikilli vanlíðan, en til þess að losna frá henni fer hann að finna hættulegan anda. Andinn bíður Peter steinhjarta til þess að losna við allar tilfinningar sínar og eins mikinn pening og hann lystir. Næsta dag leggur hann upp í heimsferðalag þar sem hann mun læra hinar ýmsu lífsins lexíur. Þetta er heimsfrægt ævintýri sem kvikmyndirnar „Heart of Stone" og "Das Kalte Herz" er byggðar á.Wilhem Hauff (1802-1828) var bæði ljóðskáld og skáldsagnahöfundur. Hann missti föður sinni aðeins sjö ára gamall og kenndi sjálfum sér mikinn fróðleik á bókasafninu. Hann lærði heimspeki og varð síðan kennari, en hann byrjaði síðar að skrifa sögur fyrir nemendur sína, sem hann svo gaf út undir nafninu: „Ævintýra Almanak árið 1826". Þessar sögur urðu gríðarlega vinsælar í þýskumælandi löndum og eru það enn í dag.
