In de essaybundel annex bloemlezing Een daad van eenvoudige rechtvaardigheid combineert de dichter Willem Kloos een selectie uit het werk van achttiende-eeuwse dichters met een reeks essays van eigen hand. De bundel was voor Kloos een poging tot eerherstel van het werk van deze dichters, dat volgens hem sterk onderschat wordt. Vooral is het boek één grote aanklacht aan het adres van Dr. W.J.A. Jonckbloet, een letterkundige die volgens Kloos het imago van de achttiende-eeuwse Nederlandse poëzie om zeep heeft geholpen.Willem Kloos (1859-1938) was een van de bekendste dichters uit de Beweging van Tachtig, de groep schrijvers en dichters die in de jaren tachtig van de negentiende eeuw een revolutie ontketenden in de Nederlandse poëzie. Samen met onder andere Herman Gorter, Albert Verwey en Lodewijk van Deyssel drukten zij voorgoed hun stempel op de literatuurgeschiedenis.

Aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw stond er in Nederland een groep jonge schrijvers op die wilden afrekenen met de stijl van schrijven die in die tijd populair was. Ze hadden een hekel aan zoetsappige, moralistische teksten, en schreven poezie en proza dat in niets leek op het werk van hun voorgangers.Twee van deze jonge schrijvers, Albert Verwey en Willem Kloos, gingen nog een stapje verder, en schreven Julia, een verhaal van Sicilie, een roman in gedichten. Dit verhaal is geschreven als persiflage op de zoetsappige romans die toen in zwang waren, en inderdaad werd het boek zeer positief besproken. Verwey en Kloos hebben daarna in een pamflet de critici die hun verhaal positief besproken belachelijk gemaakt.In Julia volgen we de avonturen van de mooie jonge Julia, een Siciliaanse schone die door de dichter wordt gered van een op hol geslagen paard. Ze worden verliefd en hij, protestant, bekeert zich voor haar tot het katholicisme. Maar dan vertrekken ze op een fatale huwelijksreis.-
