FOR FORTY consecutive years I have employed my Sunday evenings in the pulpit of the First Baptist Church, Minneapolis, in evangelistic appeals. Sermons, like men, are "known by their fruits." A few years ago I selected twelve of these Sunday evening sermons upon which God had most signally set His soul-winning favor, and they were published under the title, Revival Sermons. Since that time, I have been requested, by different publishing companies, to provide another volume of soul-winning sermons, but until my series of forty volumes, covering the entire Bible, was finished, I fed all such sermons into that colossal task, namely, The Bible of the Expositor and the Evangelist. Now, however, that that series is complete, we respond to the call of the Zondervan Publishing House in this booklet- containing a month's work for Sunday nights, and dealing with the four subjects, The Divine and The Human Side in Salvation; A Mans One Chance to Be Saved; Who, Then, Will Be Saved?; and Who, Then, Will Be Lost? Judging by the response to the verbal delivery of these discourses, the attractive form they are destined to find, and the extremely low price at which they will sell, we hope this small volume may prove to be in even greater demand than Revival Sermons. We have elected to leave the language that of the pulpit instead of the press, phrased for auditors rather than readers. Trusting that Christians who purchase this volume may be led to lend or give it to the unconverted for whom it was specially prepared, we shall follow its emergence from the press with our prayers. In the delivery of this series, I was conscious of a blessing, not only in my own experience, but also that it had its effect in inspiring others to new and more urgent endeavors. We are fully persuaded that the first and highest duty of the Pastor himself is not the care of the sheep only, but the accomplishment of conversion of sinners to CHRIST. I have therefore dared to dedicate this volume to the two classes mentioned among the gifts of our ascended Lord, "Pastors" and "Evangelists." If it shall bring inspiration to either, I will have an adequate return; and if, perchance, to both, my joy will be double.

That "Blessed Hope" is a theme that will continue to charm the Christian heart so long as our Lord delays His Coming. The men that entertain it most heartily and intelligently never deny the deity of Christ, nor dispute the authority of the Bible, nor decline from "the faith once for all delivered." It is so fundamental in Scripture study; so essential to spiritual living and so stimulating to Christian service, that it well-nigh represents the sufficient, if not the solitary, antidote to the present day apostasy.
