  • - Learning to Go Where it Matters
    af William Mitchell

Immediately after his baptism by John, Jesus went into the wilderness to encounter the temptations he would face in his ministry. Notice that Jesus is led into this encounter by the Spirit. It is the devil who will tempt him, but it is Jesus himself who will confront the temptations, and it is the purpose of God, as he is led by the Spirit to ponder it, that sustains and steadies him in the storm. He must confront his temptations, and prepare. And so must we. We must know Jesus, not just as a beautiful ethical idea, not either just as a fetish that will work magic, but by his own living presence within us, by the flesh and blood that have become our own life and nature. He must abide within us. When the devil looks us in the face, he must see Jesus. If we want to resist the devil instead of betraying Jesus, we must rise above the cheap motivations that derive from fear of punishment and from the clutch at security. The devil who confronts us will offer the same temptations Jesus faced, though watered down to our own paltry circumstances. Instead of urging us to turn stones into bread, he will urge us to play the market to make gain out of others' ruin. Instead of the amazement of the crowd at our deliverance from self-ruin by divine intervention, he will suggest the envy evoked by our Rolex or Cadillac. Instead of mastery of all kingdoms, he will show how to connive to cut other heirs out of the will, or evade the IRS, or successfully cheat partner or spouse. Supply your own revisions here; the temptations will at their core be the same timeworn temptations.God can work in your wilderness, if you are aware and take action.

The Pharisees valued their own paltry concerns more than the joy the banquet host invites them to share. Thus they have excluded themselves from the ultimate joy, the feast of the joy of sharing with the Lord himself and so with all the guests as well. Such exclusionary "joy" as has been the motive in the worldly banquet that day must rob them of true joy. How can one feast in the presence of hungry misery, and not be touched by the sad irony in their "joy"? We are faced with the reality that there may be local and accessible ways the grand issues of life may be distilled on our own lives. Just as the disciples had to "follow" Jesus, and hear his teaching and watch his active compassion, even so we must see Jesus' love for us as more than a privileged interest in "me alone," and more than mere rescue from guilt and eternal punishment. We must become aware that the gospel is more than personal property, and not merely exculpatory. It is not just about me, it is about a kingdom of love, grace, righteousness, in which all who can be made new have an essential part and find their common identity in God's will.

As Christians, we are workmen, called to service, with tasks to do. What matters is how we manage what is given. The Master is aware of our limitations. To know and embrace God's call, not merely in theory and generalities. but in a strategy of life, in the task-by-task enterprises that the Spirit will lead us through-this is our mission. We must take dominion, as God directs. We must bring focus and initiative and creativity to each day. And we must look to Jesus, author of our faith, and trust him, our mentor and friend, to bring our service to completion and to present it, completed, to the Father.
