Prior to the armed conflict with Russia in August 2008 and the world financial crisis in September, per capita income rose three-fold, GDP rose by nearly 10% per annum and Foreign Direct Investment more than doubled to an estimated 17,2% in 2007. But those twin shocks hit many sectors and dampened economic growth. Although there has been some diversification, Georgias export structure remains quite concentrated in traditional products. In agriculture, a sector critical for the economy, labour productivity is one tenth of that in the rest of the economy and the activity has registered a decline due to shortage of credit and the small size of land plots. The report says that continuing structural reforms will be key to strengthening Georgias resilience to shocks, sustaining growth, attracting investment into export activities and improving productivity; in short, in developing an enabling environment for export diversification in terms of both product composition and geograph

Since 2002, Madagascars economy has recorded sustained real growth at an annual average rate of 6.2 per cent, attributed in particular to trade liberalization reforms, and boosted primarily by the expansion of industrial activities, construction, financial services, telecommunications and transport, according to a WTO Secretariat report on the trade policies and practices of Madagascar. This performance would improve with a more transparent, credible and predictable trade regime that can be achieved by stronger multilateral commitments by Madagascar through extension of its tariff bindings to more non-agricultural products, lower bound rates and stronger GATS commitments. A reform of the taxation system, to respect the principle of national treatment, would add consistency to Madagascars trade regime. Such an improved climate would help Madagascar to attract the capital needed to exploit its vast potential.

The book describes the WTOs achievements across a number of key areas, including: strengthening the institutional foundations of the trade system; widening its membership and increasing participation; deepening trade integration through lower barriers and stronger rules; improving transparency and policy dialogue; strengthening dispute settlement; expanding cooperation with other international organizations; and enhancing public outreach. It concludes that the WTO has achieved much over its first 20 years but the success of the WTO has inevitably given rise to new challenges.

Trade will have an important role at the global level in generating the growth necessary for reducing extreme poverty to 3 percent and boosting prosperity for the poorest 40 percent by 2030. To identify the most important challenges that exist in maximizing the positive impact of trade on poverty, we need to understand who the poor are, where they are, and what economic activities they undertake. To this end, the study highlights particularly relevant dimensions of poverty: rural poverty in remote areas, informality, fragile and conflict situations, and women. For each of these issues, this study considers the main traderelated barriers and challenges, along with policy responses to address them. It shows the importance of the multilateral trading system and of the Doha Round, as well as the important role of the WBG and WTO in promoting coherence and implementing trade policies in a way that delivers the greatest possible benefits for the poor.

The WTO's agreements are the legal foundation for the international trading system that is used by the bulk of the world's trading nations. This series offers a set of handy reference booklets on selected agreements. Each volume contains the text of one agreement, an explanation designed to help the user understand the text, and in some cases supplementary material. They are intended to be an authoritative aid for understanding the agreements, but because of the legal complexity of the agreements, the introductions cannot be taken as legal interpretations of the agreements. This fully revised and expanded second edition provides an overview of the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement and the types of measures it covers. It also contains the full text of the Agreement and the decisions and recommendations adopted by the TBT Committee since January 1, 1995.
