When the plane landed in the airport, I still could not believe that I was in a Western country. Putting my feet on a foreign country's soil, and specially a Western one; seeing people from so many different places, races and languages, and so many other new experiences which were happening to me just within 24 hours, and this was too much for me. I was dizzy and confused and at the same time flying over the moon. By then, I had always seen the same people with the same race and color and the same language and culture for the whole my life, and now everything was so different. For a moment, I thought I was in another planet! But it was not, it was the West!

This Persian self learner is unique in a sense that it uses a comparative linguistics method to teach Persian as a second or foreign language. This method has been attested by the author through several years of teaching of Persian to adult English speakers in Australia. The logic behind this method is that if the language learners understand the structural differences between their own languages with the target language, learning the language will be much easier for them.

This dictionary is primarily written for English speakers, including: A)High school students in USA, Europe, and Australia and in other parts of the world who learn Persian as a second language. B)English tourists who visit Persian-speaking countries. C. Students in western defence forces who learn Persian. (For example, in Australia, we have a Persian Department in the School of Language in Defence and we have six staff to teach Persian to English students, and all these students need such a dictionary). D. All university students who learn Persian as a subject in USA, Europe and Australia. E.Other People who learn Persian for other purposes. F.All Persian migrant children in west who want to learn Persian beside English. G.All Persian speakers who want to learn English in West.

This book is a part of my PhD thesis that I completed in the School of Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia in May 1998. A summary of the thesis was published as a book by Lincome Europa which was a comparison of the grammars of Azeri, Turkish, English and Persian. This book is only about Azeri grammar and does not include its phonology.

Persian (Farsi & Dari) is a member of Indo-Iranian language group which itself is a subgroup of Indo-European languages. Persian is spoken mainly in Iran (called Farsi) with a population of 70 million, Afghanistan (called Dari) and Tajikistan (called Tajiki), as well as in other parts of world especially in USA and Europe. By knowing Persian, you will be able to communicate with and understand the speakers of of the different versions of this language in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Unlike the script, which seems difficult, spoken Persian is easy to learn. Most Persian speakers can not speak English and any attempt to speak in Persian by foreigners is welcomed.

This dictionary uses transliteration as the basis for the word entries and makes it easier for the language learners who are not familiar with the Persian script or are not skilled enough in using it. In those few dictionaries which use transliterations, since the alphabetical order is based on Persian script, it is very difficult and in some cases impossible for a non-native speaker to find the word, especially for those who are at the first stages of learning the language. However, in this method, they would be able to find the transliteration as quick as the English word and they can match it with the equivalent word in the script. So, this dictionary is the first one which can be used by those who even do not know writing and reading in Persian script.

This short dictionary is a three way dictionary that is mainly compiled to show the difference between Persian (Farsi) (which is mostly spoken in Iran) and Dari (which is mainly spoken in Afghanistan) words and phrases. It will be a useful tool for the translators of Persian and Dari as well as for the learners of these languages.

Learning Azeri has many benefits for foreign visitors. For example, by communicating in Azeri, they will be able to communicate effectively with the locals especially in remote areas where people are monolingual and do not know Persian very well. They can also find out about the culture and the history, and thus enjoy more visiting numerous monuments of the cities like Tabriz, Zanjan, Orumieh and Ardabil. By knowing Azeri, they will also be able to communicate with and understand the speakers of the related languages like Turkish. Although Azeri dialect of the Republic of Azerbaijan does not use many Persian words, and is influenced by Russian, you will still be able to communicate with them very well by using this phrasebook.

This book is about the cultural shocks that a typical Easterner with traditional life style experiences in the early days of his arrival in a Western society. The points made in this book would be shared by many Eastern migrants and many others will identify with them.
