Born into the Ottoman Muslim elite, Zeyneb Hanoum and her sister Melek Hanoum were given a Western-style education by their progressive father, who expected them subsequently to live the segregated lives of Ottoman ladies.
Zeyneb Hanoum and her sister Melek fled Turkey in 1906, at a time when women's freedom was severely restricted. This book, first published in 1913, is a collection of Zeyneb's letters, describing the sisters' experiences in Europe as well as comparing women's rights in Turkey and Europe.
