Edith Stein was a figure most singular and rare. Even within the purview of the illustrious history of the Church's saints, few can lay claim to so powerful a marriage of faith and intellect. Born into a devout Jewish family in 1891, her intellectual abilities did not long go unnoticed and in 1913 she moved to Göttingen in Germany to study philosophy under Edmund Husserl. There, as destiny would have it, she encountered a work on the life of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which lead her to a profound conversion. Following her baptism in 1922, she continued her scholarly work, teaching at various Catholic schools throughout Germany. Torn between her clear proclivity for the academic life and a deep desire to join the Carmelite Order, Edith's mind was decided for her when the rise of the Nazi party in Germany put an abrupt end to her academic career. She was able to spend some contented years with the Carmelites, but in the end her Jewish heritage caught up with her, leading to her inevitable arrest by the Gestapo. In due course she was sent to Auschwitz, where she died in 1942.First published in 1955, Hilda Graef's The Scholar and the Cross remains the most insightful and accurate biography of this saint. Filled with intimate details of Stein's conversion, interior life, scholarly endeavors, and eventual martyrdom at the hands of the Nazis, this book stands as an enduring, loving tribute to a great saint and scholar.

  • af Vladimir Sergeyevich Solovyov
    363,95 kr.

Vladimir Solovyov (1853-1900) was one of the most remarkable figures of the 19th century. He was the most important Russian speculative thinker of that century, publishing major works on theoretical philosophy, the philosophy of religion, and ethics. He also wrote profound religious verse, much of which is translated into English here for the first time. Included are all of the short lyric poems; Three Meetings, an autobiographical poem of mystical visions; The White Lily, a comical-mystical play, a genre invented by Solovyov; and a ground-breaking essay (translated into English for the first time) on Solovyov's poetry by the eminent theologian Sergius Bulgakov. The most important poems are sophianic, in that they express a personal relation to Sophia, whom Solovyov encountered several times during his life. This book presents an aspect of Solovyov's work that most readers are unaware of; it enables us to watch a spiritual genius plumbing the depths of cosmic truth.

The Radiance of Being offers nothing less than a portrayal of the full glory of Catholic tradition. From an initial engagement with the insights of the natural sciences emerges a spiritual vision of the metaphysical depth and dimension of mystery to the cosmos, allowing the reader's mind to awaken to the coherence, beauty, intensity of life, and depth of structure of the natural world--the holiness of creation and all contained therein. Conversant with Islam, Buddhism, non-dualist traditions, as well as myriad mystical elements and esoteric currents within Christianity, the author builds a brilliant symphonic work whose master theme is the Trinity. To the urgent questions asked--in response to the crises besetting the modern world--about the nature of reality and the meaning of existence, of what it means to be human, Stratford Caldecott puts forward a clear and compelling answer in language accessible to all: Being is radiant because it is a gift, not only from the Trinity, but also within the Trinity itself; and, in the end, the meaning of existence is love. "Stratford Caldecott is a great English visionary and a man of supreme courage. In short compass, this profound book, like no other, points the way forward for theology."--Catherine Pickstock "This wonderful new book is truly prophetic."--John Milbank "The Radiance of Being is an outstanding achievement and a major contribution to the serious Catholic literature of our time."--Wolfgang Smith "Stratford Caldecott's latest book is a true adventure of both mind and soul. Highly recommended!"--Conor Cunningham "The Radiance of Being is a beautiful collection of essays."--Tracey Rowland "This is a wonderful book by an agile thinker on a theme of great importance."--David L. Schindler "The author of The Radiance of Being is one of the most important living exponents of Catholic metaphysics"--Adrian Walker (from the Foreword)

The Power of Four offers startling evidence for the existence of a mysterious Biblical code and the four keys that open its marvelous spiritual treasures. Drawing connections throughout the entire Bible, the book revolves around the keys of the four allegorical creatures mentioned in Ezekiel and the Apocalypse, the four collections of Old Testament books, the four structural clues at the beginning of each gospel, and the four sets of seven hidden symbols in each gospel. Unlike the Bible Code, which requires a computer to decipher, or the execrable Da Vinci Code, the genuine "code" behind the Gospels is hidden in plain sight. Offering a view that runs counter to the received wisdom of our age--which considers Scripture as no more than a haphazard collection of writings by time- and culture-bound human authors--the four keys enable us to understand the entire Bible as the systematic work of an Infinite Mind, and ultimately allow the reader to discern the deeper meanings of the life of Jesus Christ.

What has liturgy to do with life? The sacred with the secular? This study proposes that the liturgy calls us, in the words of Aidan Kavanagh, "to do the world as the world was meant to be done." The sacramental liturgy of the Church and the personal liturgy of our lives should be as a seamless garment.Consecrating the World continues David Fagerberg's exploration of the Church's lex orandi (law of prayer) by expanding two major themes. The first considers liturgy as the matrix wherein our encounter with God becomes an experience of primary theology. The second illustrates how a believer is made ready for this liturgy through asceticism in both its faces-the one negative (dealing with sin), the other positive (dealing with sanctification). This book turns these two themes outward to a liturgical theology of the cosmos-a mundane liturgical theology of the consecration of the world and the sanctification of our daily life."David Fagerberg invites us, with the urgency of the gospel, to see God the Trinity in every created thing, and to offer to God as a joyful sacrifice of praise the good things He has made, rather than cleaving egocentrically to these good things. When, through the Dove (the Spirit), Christ frees us to do the world in this way, we become the liturgical priest-kings we were meant to be; we learn how to live and die on the ascending path of Christ. Steeped in the spirituality of the Orthodox East and the Anglican West, enriched by the Catholic masters of Ressourcement, Fagerberg shares his vision in everyday language for all to hear. Just when it seemed that spiritual masters no longer roamed university hallways, God has raised up a true spiritual guide for our time. Open this book, awaken from spiritual slumber, read and rejoice."-MATTHEW LEVERING, Mundelein Seminary"Consecrating the World takes up where David Fagerberg's masterful On Liturgical Asceticism left off, providing a key to living the liturgy in every moment and aspect of human life. That this is indeed an everyday task takes nothing away from its divine content and sublime finality. Fagerberg is rightly regarded as one of the foremost liturgical theologians of our day. His engagement with the tradition is both fresh and fruitful. If we are to be 'thoroughly imbued with the spirit and power of the liturgy, ' we must grasp what the Sacred Liturgy in fact is. For this, Fagerberg is a worthy and rightly demanding guide."-DOM ALCUIN REID, Monastère Saint-Benoît, La Garde-Freinet, France"Consecrating the World is no ordinary book. It is a course in re-training the mind and the senses to perceive the world in a new way. Like the ancient Fathers, David Fagerberg sees all material things as sensible signs leading us to heavenly realities. Like Maximus and Dionysius, he shows us that the cosmos is itself a liturgy, calling us to consecrate ourselves and our work, our passions and the world to God-to sanctify the temporal order. This is a theology most visionary, joyful, and passionate."-SCOTT HAHN, Franciscan University of Steubenville"In David Fagerberg's new book, his trademark genius for integrating liturgical theology, ascetical theology, and the theology of creation is on full display, but here developed in a new, pneumatological direction that seems to lift it all up on the wings of the Holy Spirit. This book fully corroborates Fagerberg's reputation as one of the most creative and inspiring liturgical theologians of our time. It will have a wide readership both inside the academy, in seminaries, and in the hands of anyone interested in learning what is the deep connection between the sacred moments of the liturgy and the mundane moments of life in the world as we all must live it."-JOHN C. CAVADINI, University of Notre Dame

  • - Also Including At the Dawn of Mist-Shrouded Youth
    af Vladimir Solovyov
    378,95 kr.

This volume contains several late works of Vladimir Solovyov, representing his final speculations about matters crucial to the destiny of humanity and of the world. As Solovyov's life was coming to an end at the close of the 19th century, his thoughts were turned toward three things: the end of the world (the Antichrist), the beauty and wisdom of the world (Sophia), and the nature of God. A completely new translation of the famous "Short Tale About the Antichrist" is presented here, along with revised versions of "At the Dawn of Mist-Shrouded Youth," "Three Meetings," and "The Concept of God." "An indispensable survey of Solovyov's 'late' and most visionary works. Boris Jakim is our most distinguished translator of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian religious thought, and this volume is further evidence of the fact."--DAVID BENTLEY HART, author of The Experience of God and Atheist Delusions "A Short Tale About the Antichrist is Vladimir Solovyov's last philosophical work, and to my mind his best. Its combination of profundity and wit is matchless, and its vision of the 21st century begins to have a haunting sense of prophetic truth. With this excellent new translation, combined with revised versions of other late works by Solovyov, Boris Jakim adds new dimensions to the English reader's understanding of one of the major Russian thinkers."--RICHARD PEVEAR, translator of War and Peace and The Brothers Karamazov "This volume brings together some of the last and most significant writings of the nineteenth-century Russian writer who is widely regarded as the greatest of Russian philosophers and religious thinkers--Vladimir Solovyov. The works selected by Boris Jakim for this volume are perfectly chosen to demonstrate both the breadth and the principal concerns of Solovyov's mature thought, reflecting as they do not only his literary genius in poetry, prose fiction, and philosophical essays, but also his life-forming mystical experiences and his fascination with 'Sophia, ' or the feminine principle, in everything from his own biography to the structure of reality. Readers will welcome the scrupulous accuracy of Jakim's translations and their stylistic fidelity to the original Russian."--JAMES P. SCANLAN, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Ohio State University

Theology for Beginners is one of the most outstanding presentations of the central doctrines of the Christian faith ever penned. After showing how God is Spirit, the author examines God's infinity and man's creation from nothing, and then moves on to the Trinity, the Fall, the Incarnation and Redemption, the Mystical Body, Grace and the Sacraments, and the Last Things. For those to whom these doctrines once seemed formidable, Sheed's is a fresh voice of lucid and carefully reasoned prose. To read Theology for Beginners is to have one's mind awakened to the spiritual realities at the center of human existence.

"What is a good education? What is it for? To answer these questions, Stratfor Caldecott shines a fresh light on the three arts of language, in a marvelous recasting of the Trivium whereby Grammar, Dialectic, and Thetoric are explored as Remembering, Thinking, and Communicating. These are the foundational steps every student must take towards conversion of heart and mind, so that a Catholic Faith can be lived out in unabashed pursuit of the True, the Good, and the Beautiful."--

  • - The Mysteries of the World in Christ
    af Stratford Caldecott
    368,95 kr.

All Things Made New explores the Christian mysteries in the tradition of St. John the Evangelist, and Mary, the Mother of Jesus, by studying the symbolism, cosmology, and meaning of the Book of Revelation, as well as the prayers and meditations of the Rosary, including the Apostles' Creed and the Our Father. These reflections lead us step by step to the foot of the Cross, and to the Wedding Feast of the Lamb, where all things are made new. "A lucid and thoughtful exposition of what is, by any standards, an extraordinarily dense and difficult book. Caldecott explains that the Apocalypse 'has to be received into the soul'; indeed, it is intensely relevant to our own times. His book is both rich in knowledge and rewarding to read." - Francis Phillips, Catholic Herald "The time may be right for just such a book as this, which takes seriously both the book of Revelation and the richness of the 'Here comes everybody' that is Catholic culture, which has a lively message to address to our bruised and battered world today." - Nicholas King, The Tablet "All Things Made New is a serious book about the most serious of things, the mysteries of faith, which all of us should encounter frequently and grasp ever more deeply. A book that will leave the reader wiser, holier, and both ready to practice the faith and eager to share it." - Fr. C. John McCloskey, National Catholic Register
