Bogen AWARE: Reflections on the Agency of Architecture undersøger således arkitekturens agens og spørger, hvad det er, arkitektur kan og gør?
The book is the first in our paperback series, which aims to present current and pressing challenges in architecture and urban design in an effective, powerful and thought-provoking way. In a shorter format and with a new way of looking at things, these books trigger poignant questions about the future of our built environment. De Jordische Byer presents two different episodes. The first takes the reader through the history of urban development: from the muscle city, which was driven by human and animal labor, through the machine cities of industrialization to the current borderless cities, characterized by global communication and blurred urban divides. It introduces the concept of the earthly city as a close, harmonious interweaving of people and nature. The second section deals with the urgent need to rethink urbanism in light of the climate crisis. It calls for a paradigm shift for a sustainable future. It explores the polarized responses to the climate crisis: technological optimism versus hyperlocal sustainability. The earthly, however, moves away from globalization and locality and focuses on our interconnectedness with Earth's ecosystems. This book is indispensable for anyone interested in future urban life and our role within the Earth's ecological framework.
Circular Construction for urban development is based on the Circular Economy theory developed by the Ellen McArthur Foundation. The perspective presented is how circular principles can be implemented on multiple levels in the building industry by applying off-site modular industrialised construction. The book's overarching theme is exploring the synergies of coupling circularity with industrialisation. The construction sector is well known for being siloed and slow to innovate due to its inherent nature of starting over in each individual project and solving the same challenges with new teams and new solutions. Through industrialised construction, our current project-focused practice can be turned into circular product platform thinking based on the belief that rationalisation and technological innovation will continue to play a significant role in shaping a safer and fairer future. This book introduces various principles, perspectives, and tools. It covers principles of design for disassembly, material and building passports, and circular business models. It also provides perspectives on circular life cycle assessment and tools that can provide circularity insights, planetary boundary targets for construction, and estimates of existing reuse and upfront carbon savings.
This collection of photographs unveils the uncanny beauty of overlooked structures and familiar architectural icons from around the world. British photographer Alastair Philip Wiper renowned for his work in industrial, scientific, and architectural photography, presents a unique perspective on architecture as he infuses each image with hyper-realistic colors and atmospheres, creating an intimate connection between the viewer and the buildings. This publication dives into untold stories and emotions carried by architectural forms, as Wiper's work transcends traditional photography, presenting a narrative element that resonates with everyday life. Among the buildings featured in the book are works by architects such as Arne Jacobsen, Marcel Breuer, and Santiago Calatrava.

The book delves into the intricate political complexities that surfaced following the Danish People’s Party’s proposal in 2016 to delist Erik Christian Sørensen’s Viking Ship Hall in Roskilde, demolish it, and allocate 150 million in funding for a new museum ”in Viking style.”Over the following four years, as experts rose to the building’s defense and as media sporadically fueled the controversy, a nuanced political process unfolded, marked by unexpected alliances, creative diplomacy, and fluid conflict zones. It was a case that offered a rare research opportunity to explore the political agency of architecture as it unfolded in real life. The pivotal question posed by the book is to what extent did the building itself function as a political actor? Dag Petersson would soon discover that the Hall did played a role, just not in the way he had anticipated.
100 Copenhagen Typologies presents 100 examples of re-use, adaptation and mixed-use architecture. In this book, Martin Marker and his students from The Royal Danish Academy - Architecture, Design, Conservation at the Institute of Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape - BA Programme investigate Copenhagen as a Wunderkammer of architectural typologies.Leaving the focus on materiality and visual aesthetics aside, the book explores how programmatic complexities and existing structures can form foundations for future urbanism in a rapidly changing world with a growing population, climate changes, and limited resources. This book extends a welcoming invitation to explore and examine our urban structures, sparking a vital conversation that encourage a fresh perspective on our existing typologies, ensuring their continued relevance for the people who inhabit them.

Building Diversity: who is the architect? explores how the figure of the architect has been constructed and challenged in recent years. Traditionally perceived as male, Western, and individualistic, architects are now being urged to redefine themselves in a more diverse, inclusive manner. The publication discusses the need to challenge norms and establish caring as an essential quality in architectural discourse. With the threat of environmental collapse and other societal challenges, the need for collective teamwork and empathy has become central in establishing a common understanding that includes all beings. Building Diversity aims to tackle these issues and explore topics on diversity and equality in the architectural field's past, present, and future. The publication features thoughts and ideas from a broad range of countries and diverse perspectives on the architectural profession, contributing to a wider dialogue about inclusion, intersectionality, and progress. Building Diversity is not intended to provide concrete solutions but aims to stimulate discussion and open up venues for hosting dialogues pointing to possible paths and the expansion of perspectives. It is an important contribution to the ongoing conversation about diversity and equality in the architectural field.

The city of Rome consists of many historical layers. It is characterized by different architectural styles created from antiquity to the present day. But what characterizes the buildings from the different periods of the city's development? Rome: An architectural history told through text by art history professor Maria Fabricius Hansen and drawings by comic book creator Lars Horneman about the central features of the buildings of the past. The book provides a thorough introduction to Rome's architecture and urban space. In addition, it provides an overview of Europe's architectural history told through Rome's architectural changes over the centuries. The drawings illustrate the text, but are also included as independent sequences of narrative image series. The combination of text and drawing makes the book a living story about the great transformations that Rome's architecture and urban space have undergone. The book contains a historical timeline that places the buildings in a larger cultural-historical context. Together with the book's map, it suggests that it is not only read at home, but also used as inspiration for city walks in Rome.

Gellerup tells the story of one of the most ambitious and controversial urban development projects in Danish history. Gjellerupplanen was launched as a brand-new urban district, modelled after the modernist planning ideals that transformed cities all over the world. The book follows the plan, from the 1950s when the visions surfaced, to the point when the first turf was cut, and all the way up to the present, when the area has come to epitomize the social challenges associated with modernist large-scale planning. Today, the district is undergoing a dramatic transformation aimed at redefining the place and installing a different narrative about this troubled part of Aarhus. This means that Gellerup may be used as a prism to shed new light on the varying Danish architecture and housing policies. The book takes an in-depth look at the architectural and urban visions that shaped Gellerup in the first place and then goes on to examine the events and ideas that led to the present perception of the area, including its problems and potentials.
THE WELFARE CITY IN TRANSITIONThrough a compilation of texts and images from different voices and decades the book presents key challenges and perspectives of the past, present and future of the Danish welfare city. It provides a critical map for reflection and action when tackling the urban issues of our time. The welfare city as we know it today is facing structural transformations, undermining the ideology of the post-war welfarism. As the welfare city has entered a new phase of market driven development, many of the challenges that the post-war welfare city's architects and decision makers dealt with resemble the present- day crises: financial crisis, migration crisis, democracy crisis, housing crisis, health crisis - and on top of it the major 'newcomer' crises of climate changes and the covid-19 pandemic.

Architecture and welfare state are usually regarded as separate spheres, yet they are both based on the wish to provide a good life for the community and the individual. This book is about welfare design and about designing for welfare.
Flere end 1000 illustrationer underbygger forfatterens synspunkter.
