Confronted with a Covid-19 epidemic all the more frightening for its rapid spread while its origins remained mysterious, scholars responded to the general need for meaning by placing world disasters in historical perspective. It led to a renewed interest in the relationship between religion and disease, while religious orders as specific actors, victims or voices during epidemics remained overlooked. This is precisely what this book explores.It discusses how religious orders positioned themselves between collective salvation and individual survival. It considers the contribution of religious orders to a spiritual awakening in the face of epidemics, both as intercessors responding to appeals from lay people and civil authorities and as religious ready to offer their lives for the victims. It compares male and female religious orders in the modern era, which was more globalized, medicalized and secularized than medieval societies. Facing disease, both consecrated men and women took original paths and even invented new and provocative theologies of illness. A comparative approach, from the Black Death in the fourteenth century to AIDS in the twentieth century, and wide geographical coverage on a global scale, from transnational congregations to specific care establishments, enable comparisons to be make but also clearly distinguish different historical configurations. Building on a renewed scholarship into Catholic religious orders, this book is a major contribution to the history of societies shaped by religion and disease.
This study argues that the local eucharistic community (LEC) is an essential unit of life in the Orthodox Church. The LEC is understood as the community of people who are bound together by weekly participation in the Divine Eucharist around the same altar, in which they are united to Christ and one another, and who choose to live in deep intentional community, growing in the life of Christ together, caring for one another, and witnessing to the world. The author presents a framework for the study and nurture of LECs based on eight attributes, which are: eucharistic life, community life, Christian formation, stewardship, governance, evangelism, philanthropy, and cultural incarnation. To gain a deeper understanding of LECs, their life is studied in the first century with some attention to the trajectory of their later development. Field research in the United States provides contemporary experience to supplement the understanding of healthy LECs. This research is supplemented by study of eucharistic ecclesiology, Orthodox missiology, and the Church Growth Movement to better understand how LECs should function and thrive in the twenty-first century. The new model of ministry presents a vision of healthy LECs as it has been developed in Albania and a practical plan for sharing this vision in other ecclesial contexts in the twenty-first century
Sergii Bulgakov (1871-1944) is one of the preeminent theologians of the 20th century whose work is still being discovered and explored in and for the 21st. A famous rival of Lenin in the field of economics, and, according to Wassily Kandinsky, "one of the deepest experts on religious life" in early twentieth-century Russian art and culture, Bulgakov, economist, publicist, politician, and later Orthodox theologian and priest, became a significant "global player" in both the Orthodox diaspora and the Ecumenical movement in the interwar period.This anthology gathers a collection of papers given at the international conference on the occasion of Bulgakov's 150th birthday at the University of Fribourg in September 2021. The chapters, written by established Bulgakov specialists, not least the keynote speaker Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury (2002-2012), as well as young researchers from different theological disciplines and ecclesiastical traditions, explore Bulgakov's contribution to meeting the challenges of the modern world and to building bridges between East and West. The authors bring forth a wide range of new creative ways to critically engage with Bulgakov's theological worldview and cover topics such as personhood, ecology, political theology and trinitarian ontology.

Münster zählt heute zu den attraktivsten Städten Deutschlands. Man wird weit reisen müssen, um eine vergleichbare "Stadt der Mitte" zu finden. Nirgendwo sonst reichen Tradition und Moderne einander so formvollendet die Hand wie hier. Im selbstverständlichen Nebeneinander ruht das Geheimnis des Erfolgs. Die Geschichte trägt Münster. Dazu haben Bürgerstolz und Lokalpatriotismus die Richtung bis heute vorgegeben. Obwohl die Ortsentwicklung erst um 950 einsetzte, vollzog sich der Aufstieg zur westfälischen Metropole geradezu vorbestimmt. Diesen Status bewahrt Münster bis heute. Auf dem Weg dorthin war es mächtiger Bischofssitz, einflussreiche Hansestadt, Verhandlungsort zur Beendigung des Dreißigjährigen Kriegs, Provinzialhauptstadt und Verwaltungsmittelpunkt im preußischen Westen, und es ist heute weithin ausstrahlender kultureller Anziehungspunkt, Sitz einer der größten deutschen Universitäten sowie Dienstleistungsstadt mit 300.000 Einwohnern. Der Band stellt mit seinen eindrucksvollen Abbildungen die Stadt in Geschichte und Gegenwart dar und vereint Tradition, Moderne und Typisches, kurzum das, was den besonderen Reiz Münsters ausmacht.
The Russian Orthodox theologian Fr. Sergii Bulgakov's final work, The Apocalypse of John, is more than an epilogue to his major systematic trilogy, On God-humanity. Published posthumously in 1948, this commentary on the final book of the New Testament can be considered the conclusion of his work as a whole. Written "in the face of the very apocalypse of life" during the Second World War, Bulgakov's commentary is not focused on trepidation before final judgement, but reflects deeply on the possibility of hope in the midst of the tragedy of human history, and joy at the prospects of God's final triumph, the transfiguration of creation: it is 'the divine story of the victory of the Lamb'.
Metropolit Hilarion, hat im Rahmen der Biblisch-Theologischen Kommission des Moskauer Patriarchats viele Jahre an einer umfangreichen Darstellung des Glaubens der Russischen Orthodoxen Kirche gearbeitet. Mit diesem "kleinen", von ihm persönlich verantworteten Katechismus, der zuerst in der deutschen Übersetzung erschienen ist, spricht er breite Kreise fragender, suchender Menschen an. Auch Christen westlicher Tradition können sich mit Gewinn dieser Wegbegleitung anvertrauen, die zur Mitte des christlichen Glaubens führt.
