A biography of Dr. John Gorrie (1803-1855)--a physician, inventor, scientist, elected official, and a public health educator-- whose interest in tropical diseases, specifically yellow fever and malaria, led him to Apalachicola, Florida. There he practiced medicine in his office and two hospitals, and was nicknamed "The Fever Man." A man of tue compassion, Dr. Gorrie even used the second floor of his home to treat sick patients. The desire to comfort patients led to his inventions, and we can thank Dr. Gorrie for refrigeration, air conditioning, and ice.
Of the few historical shortlists women make as influencers in the arts, the same few names are recognized, making the catalogue of powerful and gifted females feel like an small and exclusive club. The truth is, however, that far more women than we know can be credited with contributions to the industries in which they honed their crafts. In 1940, when the world was at war and the Civil Rights Movement had yet to turn the page of history, Hattie McDaniel became the first black woman to win an Academy Award. She and Anna May Wong fought hard to pave the way for actresses of color and fight against racial stereotypes. Maria Tallchief was the first, and one of the only, Native American prima ballerinas to push past the stage wings toward the limelight. More than just performers, these women were people as well. In Hidden in History: The Untold Stories of Female Artists, Musicians, and Writers, the lives of many of these artists are explored, from Edmonia Lewis' wrongful expulsion from higher learning to the boundary-breaking talents of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm and their untraditional start as a school band. This book is an open door to the lives of 10 female artists, wordsmiths and performers whose work has often been overlooked in the dusty pages of an often male-dictated narration.
On any given day, there are roughly 500,000 children in America's foster care system. For many foster parents caring for these children in need, foster parenting is often the "hardest job they will ever do." Indeed, statistics show that foster parents quit caring for children in their homes after 1.5 years of service, due much in part to burnout, stress, and feelings of grief and loss. As one who trains foster parents across the nation, and across the globe, I continue to work with foster parents who are struggling with caring for children with anxieties and traumas in their home. The Foster Care Survival Guide is not just a practical guide for foster parents on how to survive the many challenges foster parents face on a daily basis as they care for children in need, but also a light hearted one, as well. Filled with personal stories from the author (himself a foster and adoptive parent of over 50 children for 15 years) as well as personal stories from foster parents across the nation, this unique book is one that foster parents can go back to time and time again. The Foster Care Survival Guide is a book that will provide resources and inspiration for today's foster parents.
