  • - The Extraordinary Story of May Savidge and her House of a Lifetime
    af Christine Adams
    138,95 kr.

The hardback edition of this book, published in 2009 under the title A Lifetime in the Building, saw its extraordinary story featured not only in the Daily Mail but also Hello magazine and quickly sold out two printings. Now it is re-launched in paperback under a new title to highlight its appeal as the tale of an extraordinary, maverick woman and her even more remarkable achievement. May Savidge lived in a half-timbered house in Hertfordshire. When the council served her with a compulsory purchase notice to make way for a roundabout, May decided she had to move but so did the house. So she had the whole thing dismantled and shipped to the North Norfolk coast and then spent the rest of her life rebuilding it, single-handed. Her fame spread around the world. Antiques Roadshow broadcast, unprecedentedly, two features about her house. Now her niece, Christine Adams, who inherited Mays house and completed it at the cost of her own marriage - tells her aunts life story from the voluminous diaries and letters she left behind

  • - The Authorised Biography of Hattie Jacques
    af Andy Merriman
    166,95 kr.

For over thirty years Hattie Jacques was a familiar presence on radio (Hancocks Half Hour), television (60 episodes of Sykes alone) and film (she was a stalwart of the Carry On series). But her stage persona of a buxom, masterful female dragon who, both literally and figuratively, carried all before her (the formidable matron of Carry On, Nurse was a typical role) could hardly have been more at odds with her off-stage personality. Warm, impetuous and generous to a fault, she was almost pathetically grateful for any show of affection and painfully self-conscious about her figure which, she believed, had caused her to be type-cast in comic roles and never given the opportunity to tackle more serious parts. In 1947, after a tempestuous wartime affair with an American officer, she married the actor John Le Mesurier who was persuaded to divorce her in 1965 though only after she had moved her chauffeur-lover into the marital home. It was, however typical of her that she actively encouraged Le Mesurier to remarry and the two remained firm friends until her death. Her lovers subsequent desertion was a bitter blow from which she never fully recovered, though she compensated my involving herself deeply in charity work and becoming a confidante to many of the young actors and actresses with whom she worked. This biography has been written with the help and encouragement of Hatties surviving son and her many friends, including Barbara Windsor, Clive Dunn, Bill Pertwee and John Le Mesurier.

  • - The Authorised Biography
    af Chris Waters
    176,95 kr.

';Fred Trueman was the first superstar of the game. He was a flamboyant, larger-than-life character' Ian Botham. Fred Trueman was so much more than a cricketing legend. ';The greatest living Yorkshireman' according to Prime Minister Harold Wilson, he couldn't help excelling at everything he did, whether it was as a hostile fast bowler for Yorkshire and England, and the first man to take 300 Test wickets in a career, or as a fearlessly outspoken radio summariser for Test Match Special. He was famous for regularly spluttering that ';I don't know what's going off out there', as well as for the level of swearing he managed to incorporate into everyday speech. Beloved of cricket crowds who filled grounds to witness his belligerent way of playing the game, and nothing but trouble to the cricket authorities, ';Fiery Fred' was the epitome of a full-blooded Englishman. But as Chris Waters reveals in this first full biography, behind the charismatic, exuberant mask lay a far less self-assured man terrified even that his new dog wouldn't like him - and whose version of his bucolic upbringing bore no relation to the gritty and impoverished South Yorkshire mining community where he actually grew up. Drawing on dozens of new interviews with his Yorkshire colleagues, family and friends, this life of Fred Trueman will surprise and even shock, but also confirm the status of an English folk hero.

  • - Dreadnought With Good Manners
    af Andy Merriman
    136,95 kr.

Margaret Rutherford was without a doubt one of Britain's best-loved comic actresses. But behind the kindly, serene front Rutherford presented to the world lay a life of trauma and repeated nervous breakdown -- the legacy of the legacy of family tragedy that saw her father murder her grandfather during a bout of mental illness and her depressive mother later kill herself. Andy Merriman's acclaimed biography intrigued and shocked readers with these revelations when it was published in hardback. Now out in paperback, is also a portrait of one of our most individual actresses. Rutherford appeared in such thoroughly English classics as Blithe Spirit, The importance of Being Earnest, Passport to Pimlico and I'm All Right, Jack! But above all she was Miss Marple, in four films -- and entirely created for the screen the role of Agatha Christie's elderly and fearless private detective that subsequent actresses like Joan Hickson and Geraldine McEwan have continued. Rutherford first played Miss Marple at the age of 70, and insisted on wearing her own clothes to feel right in the part. Above all, this was a vulnerable woman whom no-one failed to like and respect, notable again and again for quiet acts of kindness, whose life story has great appeal to everyone who appreciates both classic English comedy and simple human decency.

Is This the Real Life? The Untold Story of QUEENMark BlakeDespite the death of their exuberant frontman Freddie Mercury in 1991, Queen remain one of the most popular bands on the planet. Yet, the full story of their extraordinary success has never been told, until now.Derided by critics, but adored by fans, the band's single-mindedness and sheer ambition paid off when in 1975, Queen's six-minute operatic single 'Bohemian Rhapsody' became a Number 1 hit, changing their lives forever. Then, in 1985, Queen's incredible performance at Live Aid stole the show and reminded a global television audience of why they were one of the greatest live acts of all time.Mojo and Q journalist Mark Blake has conducted brand new interviews with record producers, ex-band members, personal assistants and school friends to produce a complete account of the band's rise from suburbia to worldwide superstardom. Is This The Real Life?: The Untold Story Of Queen tells you for the first time how the band became champions of the world.
