The history of written Romani literature is only about 100 years old, and thus Romani literatures are still being defined and consolidated. At least two special features characterize this young literature: on the one hand, it is a multilingual diasporic world literature that often can be characterized as engaged literature and tries to deconstruct various age-old stereotypes of the minority. On the other hand, female authors play a strikingly prominent role. Female authors frequently achieve visibility with their texts on the national book markets. Some authors appear in their own texts as committed feminists and/or human rights activists. For other authors, sexuality and gender play a less prominent role in their works. Additionally, women often also play very central roles in texts by male authors. Therefore, this volume aims to explore the different facets of Romani literatures on two interrelated axes. First, the essays explore the status of several diverse works as transnational world literature. Second, the contributions examine the significance of writing as a form of social engagement and self-empowerment. What emerges is the observation that mainly women authors have been speaking out and standing up for their rights as women and Romnya. No other grammatical phenomenon causes as many problems in teaching and learning as the subjunctive. Most grammars devote as many pages to the presentation of the rules as to the exceptions. This becomes even more frustrating when dealing with the differences, not only between different language families, but even within the Romance language family alone, since it seems that each language shapes the functional area of the subjunctive individually. The aim of this volume is therefore to reconsider the representation of the subjunctive in Romance languages in a crosslinguistic and contrastive way. First, an overview of research in this area from the beginnings to the latest neurolinguistic findings will explore the complexity of the issue. Next, specific phenomena of the subjunctive at the interface of its functional domain with the indicative will be illustrated by means of appropriate case studies. On this basis, an attempt is made to trace the polyfunctionality and the differing uses in the Romance languages and beyond to a common pattern with language-specific margins. This allows us to explain, not only contrastive differences, but also the decline of the subjunctive in some domains and languages, as well as demonstrate the range of substitution possibilities. Finally, the view is extended to other language families and new impulses for foreign language teaching are presented. With contributions fromTobias Gretenkort, Sebastian Buchczyk, Ingo Feldhausen, Michel Favre, Helene Rader, Liane Ströbel, Aurélie Scheffe

Emotions permeate every aspect of our lives and not only provide us with invaluable information about our environment and the people in it, but also influence our perception of situations and events. Interestingly, this domain, so ubiquitous in our everyday lives, largely resists attempts at scientific definition. One reason for this could be that emotions rarely occur in isolation but are usually combined or embedded in other states of mind. Moreover, the experience of emotions may be influenced not only by culture but also by individual language. Analysis is further complicated by the fact that emotions are abstract and require complex linguistic coding to make an invisible emotional state of the speaker at least rudimentarily visible to the listener. For this reason, the present volume aims to investigate the perception, encoding, reception, and influence potential of emotions in context and across languages using different corpora. The following questions are central: To what extent do emotions influence our perception of events and facts? and To what extent can emotion concepts be defined language-specifically, but also universally, on the basis of our perception? Therefore, the eight contributions analyze emotions in different contexts and from different starting points to uncover the cognitive mechanisms underlying the perception and influence of emotion concepts. The first four papers focus primarily on emotional and sensory experiences and interactions that are set in motion when we are confronted with emotions, while the following four focus on the different facets of emotion across languages to show which emotion concepts are language-specific or universal, and thus contribute to a better understanding of this complex field.
