Recently optioned for television!Mr O'Connor picks up a bow and casts an odd look in my direction. "Perhaps it is that Miss Deering is not as skilled as you all remember? Let's not pressure her. Likely best to leave the legend of her former prowess to the history books."There's a moment of collective silence."I beg your pardon?" I ask evenly.John stares at Mr O'Connor, mouth agape. "Connor ..."Mr O'Connor turns to me, scepticism plain on his face. "I just mean that it's clear your brothers hold your skills in high regard. Perhaps those memories are clouded by brotherly affection, or bias?"I snort indelicately."No one is better with a bow than Gwen," Michael states defiantly, but Mr O'Connor doesn't seem convinced."I find that hard to fathom. She is a girl, after all."I sit very still. Today, Mr O'Connor, I do not find you so very handsome. Everyone looks back and forth between the two of us. "You think you can do better?" I ask acidly.Edwardian EnglandGwendolyn Deering was sent away to St Ursula's School for Young Ladies six years ago, and she has no idea why. Do you know the name of the first woman from Kawartha Lakes to become a doctor or the first woman doctor to establish a practise in Lindsay? How about the woman from Verulam township who became a spy and ran a trading post in Siberia during the Russian Revolution?Have you ever heard of the Lindsay-born woman who parachuted out of hot air balloons only to be shot in the back and yet carried the bullet next to her lung until the day she died? Her sister was the only woman to rob a stagecoach and she was also born in Lindsay.Did you know the first woman pilot to be promoted to the rank of captain was from Lindsay?History books tell us that Cheeseman Moe's land that became the North Ward of Lindsay. But who was Cheeseman Moe?Have you heard of the Bobcaygeon man who swindled millions of dollars from people around the world? Many of the people featured in this book were from Kawartha Lakes and left the area before adulthood, but I do believe their experiences here shaped the people they became as with the farm girls who became doctors would have learned how animals were born and how to keep those newborns alive. Their experiences taught them how to keep human babies alive. And then there were the kids born into poverty and left to run around Lindsay's streets. They learned that when they get knocked down, no one is going to offer a hand to help them up. This book covers the stories of 20 historic citizens from the municipality of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario.
