Agnes Ayres had been in films since 1914, starting out with the Essanay Company in Chicago. After years of being in one and two reelers at Vitagraph, Agnes caught the eye of produce Jesse L. Lasky, who made her a star and as reportedly became his mistress. Agnes rose to stardom at Paramount working with some of the silent era's leading men such as Wallace Reid, Jack Holt, Thomas Meighan and Milton Sills. But her popularity peaked when she was cast opposite Rudolph Valentino in The Sheik, who would go on to become one of her closest friends, as well as the godfather to her only daughter. After her affair with Lasky ended, she signed a contract with Producer's Distributing Corporation (PDC) but they reneged on her three-film contract due to her alleged weight gain, whereupon she sued the company, including its vice-president, the powerful Hollywood director Cecil B. DeMille. Although she settled the suit out of court, her career was never the same and after transitioning to now making low budget movies, as well as a decade playing vaudeville shows across the country, she died on Christmas Day in 1940 from a cerebral hemorrhage, at the age of 48, after being ill for some time. This biography follows her life from the backroads of Illinois up to her death, and includes a comprehensive filmography of the nearly 100 movies she made during her lifetime. Louise Carley Lewisson is the author of several books including biographies of actresses Mary Nolan and Martha Mansfield, and is currently working on her next book about the life and career of actress Wanda Hawley. She currently lives in Tampa, Florida.

During the 1950s and 1960s it seemed that every TV show was written by Stirling Silliphant. His scripts for Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Tightrope, Alcoa-Goodyear Theatre, Perry Mason, and, of course, Naked City and Route 66, made him Hollywood's most produced writer. Later he dominated the disaster film cycle with The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno, brought martial arts phenomenon Bruce Lee to screen prominence with Marlowe and Longstreet, won an Oscar(R) for In the Heat of the Night, and helped create the TV mini-series. He lived the life of a movie star, not a movie writer, attending A-list parties, sailing his yacht around the world, driving posh cars, and turning out one hit after another. But it came at a price: Four marriages, estranged children, a son's death, and, ultimately, expatriation. Stirling Silliphant: The Fingers of God intimately explores the life and creative process of the man behind Charly, Pearl, The Grass Harp, Village of the Damned, and other big and small screen events. Drawn from exhaustive interviews conducted by author Nat Segaloff in the years before Silliphant's 1996 death and augmented by material from his private files, what emerges is a complex portrait of a larger-than-life figure who rose to the top of a larger-than-life industry. About the AuthorNat Segaloff has written biographies of Arthur Penn and William Friedkin, in-depth profiles of Paul Mazursky, John Milius, and Walon Green; and TV biographies of Stan Lee, Larry King, John Belushi, Darryl F. Zanuck, and Shari Lewis & Lamb Chop. He is a playwright, college instructor, journalist, and producer who loves writing books.
This book will let you into the heart and soul of Paul Lynde. Best remembered for outrageous jokes on The Hollywood Squares, as Uncle Arthur from Bewitched, and as the frantic father in Bye Bye Birdie, Paul was never satisfied with his career - or his personal life. But even as he suffered through some of the cruelest of times, Paul continued to make us forget our troubles, and was forever gracious to his fans. This is the book those fans have been waiting for. Though he was one of the most original, hilarious, and private actor-comedians of all time, author Cathy Rudolph, his trusted friend, reveals her adventures with Paul - along with his turbulent life story. Here for the first time are interviews with his relatives, personal notes, and never-before-published photos. Also included are memories from his friends and peers including Cloris Leachman, Chita Rivera, Florence Henderson, Kaye Ballard, Peter Marshall, Les Roberts, Betty White, and many more.I've been saying for forty years that Paul Lynde could deliver a punch line better than any other comedian. I look forward to having the book on my library shelf. - Les Roberts, novelist and first producer and head writer of the original Hollywood Squares"A heartwarming read" - Milieu Magazine"A Loving Tribute to a Funny Man" - Portland Book Review

Superman and the Mole-Men (1951) with George Reeves. The Fly (1958) with Vincent Price. The Last Man on Earth (1964). These low-budget films earned big-profit bonanzas, and the man behind the yields was Robert L. Lippert. When Spyros Skouras was forced to resign as commander in chief of 20th Century Fox, Darryl F. Zanuck was persuaded to return to the studio to take charge. As the studio was on the brink of disaster, Zanuck put the brakes on every project in the works and fired just about everyone on the lot, except for one man, the only one working for the studio who made their bread-and-butter pictures which, at this point in time, was the only kind of movies the studio could afford to make--and he was Robert L. Lippert. Lippert produced over 200 movies tailored to the small town exhibitors that had to change their program two or three times a week. They loved him for it. Kansas theater owner Bill Leonard told his fellow exhibitors to ". . . just line up with these Lippert pictures and you and your patrons will be happy." James Clavell--author of Shogun, Andrew McLaglen--director of McLintock, and Sam Fuller--director of Pickup on South Street, got their first breaks in the business from Lippert. Read about his battle with the Screen Actors Guild, his stormy marriage, and, of course, his movies. "Compelling, a good read. I found it hard to put down." -Western Clippings "McGee has performed an invaluable service in rounding up RL's wild celluloid herd into a single corral." -Videoscope

Lon Davis was one lucky young film buff. Growing up in Southern California in the 1970s, he was able to spend quality time with some of the celebrated residents of the Motion Picture Country Home in Los Angeles. His great-uncle, a screenwriter and bit player since the movies' earliest days, looked forward to Lon's visits; so did silent film comedienne Babe London and original Stooge Larry Fine. Blessed with exceptional recall and the ability to bring those memories vividly to life, Lon shares anecdotes that are, by turns, comical, touching, and tragic. They are also true, right down to the smallest detail. As he matured, Lon became acquainted with other members of the silent film community (including the Oscar-winning historian Kevin Brownlow) and chronicles their stories as well. And finally, Lon reveals an intensely personal account of falling in love with his best friend while searching for the elusive grave of the legendary W.C. Fields. As movie producer Pancho Kohner writes in the foreword: "Stumbling into Film History is more than a book; it's an unforgettable adventure through the golden age of cinema, with the best guide you could ask for." Lon Davis is an author, editor, documentarian, and lecturer on film history. His first published book was Silent Lives:100 Biographies of the Silent Film Era (2008). He and his wife, Debra Davis (née LaCoe), co-authored King of the Movies: Francis X. Bushman (2009), and Ma and Pa Kettle on Film (2021). In addition to editing two hundred academic books on the performing arts, Lon and Debra released two volumes of essays: Stooges Among Us (2008) and CHASE! A Tribute to the Keystone Cops (2020). Debra also published a roman à clef entitled Flirtation Act: The Story of a Boy, a Girl, and Vaudeville (2016). Lon and Debra's documentary film This is Francis X. Bushman (2021) is available on Blu-ray from Flicker Alley. Lon's latest book, Stumbling Into Film History, is comprised of newly written and revised essays detailing his experiences with various denizens of early Hollywood.
