A uniquely engaging, informative and inspirational account of John Wesley's life."A man whose eloquence and logical acuteness might have made him eminent in literature, whose genius for government was not inferior to that of Richelieu, and who devoted all his powers in defiance to what he sincerely considered as the highest good of his species." -- Macaulay"The greatest force of the eighteenth century in England ... No single figure influenced so many minds, no single voice touched so many hearts." -- Augustine Birrell"No book is so exact and vivid a description of the eighteenth century in England as Wesley's Journal." -- Augustine BirrellThe Heart of John Wesley's Journal is a uniquely engaging, informative and inspirational account of the life and thoughts of one of the most influential Christians--John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. The complete journal contains detailed daily records over fifty-five years. These carefully chosen journal passages provide a unique glimpse into Wesley's spiritual journey and his contribution to Christianity in Britain and the United States.Wesley's Journal is a testament to the transforming power of faith on one man's life and on a society. The entries are raw, honest, and at times profoundly moving. Wesley confronted his own doubts and struggles but remained steadfast in his pursuit of a deeper knowledge of God. We see a man of immense energy expressing his faith by incessantly crisscrossing the British Isles, preaching several times a day, writing extensively, engaging with all social classes, and giving away over 90% of his income. In all this, he ensured he did not harm his health-preaching to 30,000 in the open air in his seventies and remaining vigorous into his eighties.Wesley's influence extended far beyond the realm of religion. He opposed slavery and cruelty to animals while promoting women's equality, the reduction of poverty and inequality, and healthy living - writing Primitiv Physik. a best-selling lay medical text. This classic is for anyone interested in eighteenth-century England or seeking inspiration and guidance on their own spiritual journey. This edition contains 371 subheadings in the table of contents so the reader can quickly find any particular section of interest.

"The Secret Garden should be on every child's bookshelf." - The Times"It has magic, darkness, whimsy, and truth, and the fact that it was first published in 1909 yet still managed to enthral my 21st century daughter is a testament to its greatness." - Kirsty Young"This book is a classic that your parents have probably read, but don't let that put you off!" - The Guardian ***Everyone wants somewhere to belong. In our world of fake news, and ubiquitous state and corporate monitoring of citizens, "Nineteen Eighty-Four" is even more relevant than when it was written.

Beau Geste is a 1924 adventure novel by P. C. Wren. It has been adapted for the screen several times. Michael "Beau" Geste is the protagonist. The main narrator (among others), by contrast, is his younger brother John. The three Geste brothers of Brandon Abbas are used as a metaphor for the British upper class values of a time gone by, and "the decent thing to do" is, in fact, the leitmotif of the novel. The Geste brothers are orphans and have been brought up by their aunt. The rest of Beau's band are mainly Isobel and Claudia (only daughter of Lady Patricia, and in a way, also reason enough for Michael to join the French Foreign Legion), and Lady Patricia's relative Augustus. When a precious jewel known as the "Blue Water" goes missing, suspicion falls on the young people, and Beau leaves Britain to join the Foreign Legion (la Légion étrangère), followed by his brothers, Digby (his twin) and John. There, after some adventure and separation from Digby, the sadistic Sergeant Lejaune gets command of the little garrison at Fort Zinderneuf in French North Africa, and only an attack by Tuaregs prevents a mutiny and mass desertion (of course the Geste brothers and a few loyals are against the plot). Throughout the book and adventures, Beau's behaviour is true to France and the Legion, and he dies at his post. At Brandon Abbas, the last survivor of the three brothers, John, is welcomed by their aunt and his fiancée Isobel, and the reason for the jewel theft is revealed to have been a matter of honour, and to have been the only "decent thing" possible.
