But where the traditional occupation of cattle bone collection is the only way of living, could this ever be possible?The elder son, Sanyasi, becomes a bohemian artist adopted by a white-skinned priest and has been lost in Japan where he has gone to perform his folk art. His illiterate wife awaits her husband's return in an alien city.The second son Daktar became a bonded laborer as the local youths of western Orissa usually prefer to make their living.The third son Okil, who is considered by his father to be a lazy good-for-nothing, joins the Communist Guerilla movement, locally known as the Maoist Party.Three days' hunger forces Paraba to be raped for a plate of rice by a forest guard who the only representative of the Government in the jungle for the people and who also works as an agent for sex trafficking. Later she adopts the profession of prostitution. The novel ends with the death of Okil.

Aanhika is the poetry collection by eminent Odia poet Jagannath Prasad Das. This collection was awarded prestigious Saraswati Samman in 1990. Jagannath Prasad Das (J.P.) (born 26 April 1936) is an eminent Odia poet, playwright, essayist and fiction writer. He has done translations of literary works from different languages into Odia and English. He has done extensive research into Odishan art and has published three works on the pictorial arts of the state. His writings have been widely translated into Hindi, English and other Indian languages. He has been recipient of many awards including Odisha Sahitya Academy Award (1981) for the poetry collection Je Jahara Nirjanata, Central Sahitya Akademi award (1990) for the poetry collection Aanhika, and the Saraswati Samman (2006) for the poetry collection Parikrama.

"Itabhatira Shilpi" is an award winning short story collection by Gayatri Saraf, an eminent storyteller from Odisha. The collection has 13 short stories of varied themes, mostly set on western Odisha, reflect author's deep compassion and wide sympathy for the troubled and tormented. The collection has received Central Sahitya Academy award in 2017.Gayatri Saraf was born on August 17, 1952 in Bolangir and spent most of her teaching career there. She has published thirteen short story collections in Odia to her credit. For the short story collection Itabhatira Shilpi, she was awarded Central Sahitya Academy award in 2017. For teaching, she has received President's award in 2004. She was Vice-President of Odisha Sahitya Academy from 2015 to 2018. She lives in Bhubaneswar.

The novel "NIJa Nija Panipath" by Odia novelist and storyteller Jagadish Mohanty is based on theme of colliery life, coal management, trade union, minister and mafias. The protagonist of this novel Hari Shankar has sent his life as a trade union secretary in coal mines and for that reason paid a lot by neglecting his personal life. He has joined coal India as worker at the age of 18 and joined trade union. At the age of 50 he could realize that trade union has lost its loyalty ethics due to the interference of local minister .so he has decided to build a new union by the support of management, but he could not get success because of the protest of Dhruba Khatua, the existing union leader. Then he has kept hunger strike along with few peoples. After two three days all the peoples who have supported him left him alone and compromised with management alone and compromised with management. Pradyumna another character of the novel has suffered identity crisis. Being a Brahmin boy, he has accepted an identity of Samaru khadia, a tribal folk. Officially he was declared as the son of Baithu khadia. This he has to accept as he goes for a job purchased from mafia. Coal India has a policy to provide job to the people whose land have been acquired. Many tribal peoples were not interested for jobs but they preferred to instant money in lieu of such jobs. Local Mafia targeted those tribals and resold the jobs. And here Pradyumna is a victim of the system.

Jagadish Mohanty (17th February 1951-29th December 2013) was a renowned Odia writer considered as a trendsetter in modern Odia fiction, has received the prestigious Sarala award in 2003, Odisha Sahitya Academy award in 1990. This collection has ten stories written between 1970 and 1980. Most of these stories are experimental and philosophical. The language of these stories is poetic and lucid. Stories are translated by well-known translators.
