Richard Bryan of Mt. Lebanon, Louisiana was the consummate idealist. He had a forward-looking outlook. Slavery was an anachronism. In 1856, five years before the war, he offered emancipation to all 97 on his plantation, hired a teacher, deeded land, shared profits, and encouraged entrepreneurs. The Civil War devastated the South, but the war never reached his home. When Union occupiers arrived in Mt. Lebanon a decade later, they were astounded to find Bryan's experiment fully implemented. Former slaves could not only "read, write, and cipher," they were landowners engaged in a trade, and some were even bilingual.Bryan's objective was to facilitate the "conveyance" of his peaceful society from pre-war to post-war America. He saw no reason why he could not achieve this goal. Union occupiers envisioned a plethora of beneficial propaganda, but Bryan declined to be used by aggressive new politicians who demanded his cooperation to further their agenda. After the Confederate surrender, Richard Bryan, his family, their hired hands, the people, and a wounded Yankee deserter his young sons had stumbled upon in the woods and brought home with them, found themselves at the mercy of a corrupt Governor, political hacks, petty tyrants, and remorseless convicts in military uniform. Not just rustlers but occupying troops would frequently raid farms. Often, they'd steal entire harvests. If you resisted the men in uniform, they might hang you and burn your place down out of spite. There was no legal recourse against the government. Food became scarce, hard money even more so. "Injun Grass" as it was known to those who smoked it, grew wild on their land. It was good quality, so they'd periodically harvest it and offer little poke bags of cannabis for sale to visitors who were passing through on the stagecoach. Occasionally they'd even sell some to soldiers. Every penny counted. They tightened their belts, quietly bartered for weapons, secretly manufactured ammunition, and killed in self-defense when they were faced with no other choice.Their joint goal was survival. Some of them would make itWhat transpired across the South might today be equated to legal, as well as militarized police brutality by occupying forces. The experience of all, regardless of color, who lived through this traumatic and tumultuous time in history, burned itself deeply into America's collective psyche.

Pender Denton was born in a bordello. His mother, a sex-worker, taught him to steal. He grew up with little regard for "normal" society. He was a pre-teen when he killed his first man.Pender wanders the lawless, post civil war west and survives by stealing and selling horses. He meets, and insults, famous outlaw Jesse James---and lives to tell about it. Pender also met Bill Dalton, of the Wild Bunch/Dalton Gang. Bill claims to be Pender's father.Pender gains a friend, a crime partner, and a life partner when he meets Johnnie Sweetwater. Sweetwater was born a member of a California Shoshone native tribe. He had been kidnapped by missionaries who forced him into one of their schools and robbed him of his tribal legacy. The two men, both outcasts from all the so-called civilized aspects of the old west, live and travel together. They rob banks and trains. They steal horses. They fight bloody battles with other outlaws who try to steal the pair's ill-gotten loot. However, they also restore stolen wages to a crew of trail riders, risk their lives to find a neighbor's lost son, rescue a young girl who was being held hostage, and save the livelihoods of a stranded band of Irish and Chinese railroad workers.Pender Denton--Outlaw is an historically accurate look at the wild west in America, but above all, it is a very human story of two men and their adventures.

Nestled on the banks of the Willow River, just to the east of the Cherokee Mountains, the idyllic little city of Harper Falls was quintessential small town America. Nothing bad had ever happened there . . . until 1961, that is.It was in the wee hours of May 8, when firefighter Jack Troy responded with his ladder company to a major fire in a residence hall at the College of Saint Brigid where he proceeded to smash his way into a smoke-filled third floor apartment in an attempt to save a young woman who appeared to be trapped. Jack knew this high-wire heroic act would put him in grave danger, but a life hung in the balance. This is what he had trained for. This was his job. What Jack could not know, however, was that the danger he faced in the choking smoke and intense heat at the college that day would pale in comparison to the peril he would soon face as he was drawn into a gripping tale of love, romance, and murder, the likes of which had never been seen in the little city of Harper Falls.Jack's brave rescue effort at the end of his aerial ladder that morning ultimately led him to a beautiful young woman who quickly became the love of his life. Together, they made a picture-perfect couple and began to carry on a close and touching romance. But it wasn't long before Jack started to suspect that not all was well, and that someone was trying to kill his new love. Was the fire really an accident or just the sinister beginning of a slowly escalating effort to eliminate her? Jack had his doubts. The police were deeply involved, but sometimes distracted, going in the wrong direction, or pursuing a dead end. There were many suspects identified who had credible motive and adequate opportunity. Old boyfriends, former employers, an art professor, a jealous classmate, even an old girlfriend of Jack all made the list. Throughout it all, the murders and murder attempts, the frequent twists and turns, the many conflicting clues, and the multiple suspects, Jack was consistently worried that the police were getting things wrong, misreading things, and making incorrect judgments.Working closely with his old friend, Detective Sergeant Charlie O'Hanlon, Jack was determined to stay vigilant and make his own effort to find and stop the person who was responsible for the attempts made on the life of his newfound love. In the end, when circumstances forced him to take matters into his own hands, this determination brought him and his lover face-to-face with the would-be murderer and almost certain death.

A basic question is what can we do to prepare for the unexpected so that we can continue to live our current lifestyle during retirement? There are so many possibilities for disruption. And, these disruptive influences can come from a variety of sources, beyond simply financial implications. They can readily include medical, marital events, and dealing with dependent children. It so very critical to create that plan for retirement. Not only will that plan keep you active, allow you to pursue your passions, encourage self-reinvention and happiness, but also it will assist you in preparing for the unexpected.By nature, we may assume that surprises during retirement are of a negative nature. However, surprises that start out negative can readily lead to positive changes.

Signals in the Noise: An Exploration of Consciousness and Reality. How Current Research is Challenging Materialist Science"The Signals in the Noise," groundbreaking theories about consciousness are meticulously explored, presenting an avant-garde perspective that stands to challenge our traditional, materialist viewpoints. The author leads us on an intellectual journey, questioning established materialist scientific norms and bringing forward evidence that defies materialist theories of consciousness. The book emphasizes that consciousness persists and can even be enhanced when brain activity decreases, supported by numerous research studies involving psychedelics, near-death experiences, and other instances when brain functions are diminished. This new understanding suggests that consciousness transcends the physical confines of our biological makeup, challenging conventional notions about its origin and nature.Furthermore, the book introduces a transformative perspective on the universe, proposing that what we perceive as material is merely a function of our sensory systems. Based on the author's review of current theories of the composition of the cosmos, we now know everything that exists is composed of energy, with physicality representing deeper qualities that lie out of our reach. Drawing on proven quantum physics, the author presents the theory that the universe's interconnectedness is a product of coherent quantum fields from which everything emerges and takes on the character of separateness and materiality in the 4D or manifest level we experience. In a radical departure from mainstream materialist thought, "The Signals in the Noise" argues that consciousness is a universal phenomenon occurring in varying degrees of complexity across all organisms. The author posits that while the presence of proto-consciousness is universal, the consciousness we experience emerges in the fourth-dimensional or manifest level, an idea that, if widely accepted, can redefine our understanding of life and existence. Finally, the author criticizes the materialist worldview, stating that this ingrained belief system creates many societal, political, religious, and environmental problems. He argues that our obstinate adherence to materialist orthodoxy drives our trajectory toward planetary destruction. Catalyzed by our capitalist system of consumption, this materialist belief system hinders our ability to recognize and correct the adverse effects of our actions."The Signals in the Noise" is a compelling critique of the materialist worldview, challenging our understanding of consciousness, existence, and our place in the universe. It underscores the urgency to redefine our perspectives to avert the catastrophic trajectory that our current beliefs are driving us toward. This book is a radical and thought-provoking read for anyone interested in consciousness, quantum physics, and the future of our planet.

The world that our forefathers knew no longer exists, and the world in which most of us grew up is no longer here either. Science has taken us into a new world in which humans and their activities are now augmented by robots that can perform many of the functions that were previously believed to be only possible for humans to perform. The total impact of these changes is as yet unknown, but we do know that every facet of human existence has been and will continue to be impacted. There are many who fear for the future of mankind while others see possibilities for changes that will improve all facets of our lives. The one thing we do know -- life will never be the same again!

Prison Rap: Stories from the Inside, is an accumulated literary forum by one prisoner incarcerated in the Florida Department of Corrections began with the author reaching out to numerous community-based newspapers in hopes of being given an opportunity to express his views and share his personal experiences in life as well as what he has observed and lived through in twenty years in prison. Out of all the query cover letters that were sent to editors across the country, the idea of adding a Prison Rap column drew the attention of only one newspaper -The Miami Times, which ran weekly in the author's own hometown.Stopping the press to make room for a serious weekly discussion about the life of a prisoner, had proven to be a successful move as made evident by the positive feedback in letters submitted to D. Kevin McNeir, Senior Editor at the Miami Times. While prison life has always in some way been at the core of every Prison Rap discussion, with each passing week, the many topics raised had naturally began to run wild-ranging from events occurring in prison to events occurring in the free world: from learning how to forgive to being thankful for small blessings, from sharing personal moments of the past to reports about the interesting lives of fellow convicts, from engaging in spiritual conversations to motivational pep talks, from expressing the love for a mother to being equally appreciative of a grandmother, from nostalgic love to romantic relationships involving prisoners and individuals in the free world, from health issues to preparing for life after death, from life tragedies to weathering troublesome times, from believing that dreams can come true to achieving success in spite of being designated the underdog by others. As the author continues to write a weekly column for The Miami Times, his well of multiples topics have certainly not run dry. At some point, though, the thought of putting a collection of his most well-received work into a book from had crossed his mind.Over time, what began as a bright idea had become a passionate dream eventually brought to life. In all, 72 heartfelt weekly writings made the drafts, and at least two selected writings are follow-ups to others previously ran in the paper.Chiming in briefly at the beginning and the conclusion of the book are wise sayings and encouraging excerpts from several previously ran columns. Included in the book are wise sayings, encouraging excerpts from movies, and a few of well- known people. One unequivocal fact about Prison Rap is that it is heavily laced with love, motivation, hope for tomorrow, survival, resilience, information about prison and sharing with an overall concept of leading life to improvement whether one is in prison or in the free world. Amassing great riches has never been the primary goal of the author presenting his collection of writings to the world. More important to him is succeeding at conveying to his readers the personal sentiments and in-depth feelings of a man held captive away from society while demonstrating that the heart and mind of a prisoner is indeed capable of functioning humanely despite poor decisions made in the past. Whether one can find pleasure in reading any part of the book is something readers must determine for themselves. What the author can guarantee, though, is that an honest illustration of a prisoner's life will be offered in the book, which he hopes will become etched in the hearts of every soul that judges it.

ForewordBy BillThis is an unusual and valuable book in many respects. Its author, of course, is an economist - but not one devoted to the prevailing theology of his profession. Economists mostly work with the dedication of beavers or bees toward the great goals of More. Growth, expansion, and acceleration are the sacred words of their creed. And they have been enormously successful; their faith has spread around the world, crowding out all other creeds. And yet there is always something rather, well, dismal about the field. This comes, I think, from its disciples' firm determination to wall off certain questions. For instance, "What makes for happiness?" Or "How do I figure out what I want from life?" They can answer these only by pointing to our consumer behavior. We must want what we buy. But they must sense the tautological absurdity of that line of argument. Now comes James Eggert, one of a small school of economists who has begun to think outside the box. And it is curious that he soon delves deeply into a concept long used by his tribe: value. In his essay "Meadowlark Economics," Eggert inscribes it - marvelously - with real meaning, instead of the stale and transactional definition to be found in the front of the Econ textbooks. The meadowlark's "song is pleasing, his color and swoop-of-flight enchanting."Suddenly we are using good old nouns and adjectives, the sweet and solid Anglo-Saxon words instead of the ponderous Latinate syllables of the professional journal. These things are a form of wealth and are valuable, he insists. And if you assign them a value in your heart, then you are in a position to begin to assess both the positives and the negatives of economic growth. The so-called "efficiency," for instance, of the modern farm, which leaves no room for the meadowlarks to nest and fledge their young - is but one of many examples...Eggert's book will be of great use to all who read it. But it would be especially helpful - though subversive - to give it to anyone you know who is an economist. It will help them see, among other things, that grasping onto the conventional economic orthodoxy not only shows a certain blindness but can also, unfortunately, turn out to be tragic. From Kirkus ReviewsThis collection of thoughtful essays weaves together economic and ecological issues. While Eggert is an economist by trade, he is struck by the relationship between economics and ecology."I believe these two households are becoming more interdependent," he writes, "and their futures more and more intimately linked." Indeed, each of the 21 elegantly written essays in this revised collection, has a strong eco-conscious component. The unusual title is derived from the author's concern over the Midwest's loss of meadowlarks; somewhat esoterically, he translates this occurrence into "meadowlark values," suggesting that a "meadowlark economist" must "seriously try and incorporate an ecological consciousness and ecological values along with market thinking and market values."Eggert's essays are as soaring and aspirational as they are instructional and practical. For example, in "What's Wrong with Capitalism?" he notes there is "a destructive quality in capitalism that often violates the ecological laws that can and should ensure life's beauty, balance, health and long-term continuity." ...In perhaps his most novel essay," Wal-Mart Pond," Eggert cleverly combines ecology and economy by imagining a conversation with Henry Thoreau ...His final essay, "Quartet," is most worthy of contemplation: "what is our part in the 'music' of the cosmos, what is our role in the harmony of nature's variations on a theme?"... At times poetic and philosophical, even as the author remains firmly planted on terra firma.

Sparrow Basque called on the scientists of Adelphi when a large meteoroid struck her world of Ilios. Dr. Seka Horvat together with her fellow academics were overly excited for the opportunity to examine the object. Maddy and Nadia accompanied them with the hope of a new adventure. Blithely making their way to examine the stones they were unaware of the dissonant harmonic the rock was communicating to the planet and unfortunately anyone or anything that came close. It nearly killed them all.The leaders from several worlds gathered to devise a plan to save the planet, the stones had to be quelled. Maddison and Nadia volunteered for the mission, but they were told they were too old, as the vibration was tolerated better in the young. Both women bemoaned their age based dismissal but agreed to coach the more youthful team. The five volunteers had no qualms about the dangers facing them. They unanimously committed themselves to the challenge, applying their energy and determination along with a bevy of tech. The question remained, would it be enough.
