My wife and I have been married for fifty-three years. We have two grown children and six grandchildren, all girls. I recently retired from Hospital and First Responder Chaplaincy with Fire and Police. This volume is about my experiences as a crisis chaplain.Over the years, I have written simple poetry for family and friends. While preaching in ten countries, I have sent email logs of the day's events. During the COVID-19 crisis, I was encouraged to write a page or two on subjects unrelated to COVID-19 and email it to select hospital staff.Combining these elements, we present Casting Shadows at Midnight: Poetry, Musings, and Writings of a Crisis Chaplain. Many of the poems are written to my Bride of fifty-three years. Some were written while riding with the police and fire departments, and others were generic. In the Musing section, we share thoughts and impressions from multiple crisis scenarios. A sampling of these Musings includes impressions from overseas travels teaching Chaplaincy.Writings are items that came out of the COVID-19 crisis. The reader will find a little humor, light drama, and theology, along with personal notes and tidbits that mean something to me. I must admit that I'm neither a skilled comedian nor detailed enough to produce a classic mystery novel. I'm also not an expert theologian who can write a heavy volume to settle the inerrancy question that has plagued people for years. However, I am knowledgeable enough to write about topics that interest many readers. Some of the writing is deeply emotional and personal. The poetry will not win many awards but will be heartfelt.Born in Collin County, Texas, Rickey grew up in a tiny town of 254 residents. There were sixteen in his high school graduating class. He attended East Texas Baptist College for two years and then transferred to Dallas Baptist College, where he met his bride, Julie. Their marriage is almost fifty-three years long and growing. He and Julie pastored churches in Missouri and Texas. He became a chaplain with the Plano Police Department, continued with the McKinney, Texas Police Department, and finally retired from the Department of Public Safety as a Chaplain and the Dallas Police Department as a chaplain trainer.Undeterred by the demands of his career, Rickey pursued further education, earning a master's degree from Luther Rice Seminary and a doctorate from Master's International School of Divinity. These academic achievements have equipped him to focus on his current role, providing chaplaincy services to patients and their families.Since retiring from Hospital Chaplaincy, Rickey has enjoyed grandchildren. His son Stephen has two marvelous stepdaughters, and his daughter Christy has two beautiful sets of twin girls. The bigs are identical, and the littles are fraternal.

The dance between words on a page has the ability to move us in many directions. How we react to those words, both as a reader and a writer, tells more about ourselves than we might think. This book is a collection of poems ranging from Space to Earth to Family - from the vastness of the Universe to the intimacies of interpersonal relationships. Life, and the meaning of life, is many things to many people. Examine our existence. Examine ourselves. Can we draw many parallels? Maybe.Whether our lives are touched by poetry or not, words have staying power beyond pen on paper, words spoken aloud. It is not always what we write that carries weight in our lives, but what we don't write - the pauses, the spaces between where we stop - the unwritten words. Truths often live between those lines.

Can't we all just...get along?"The Eidolon of Clay" is a prose poem with a historical setting, passing fleetingly into the realm of fantasy upon the finding of a forgotten piece of statuary. Hi. I'm Marissa Sanlier. Up until a few days ago, I was a twenty-year-old girl living with my great, great... maybe a few more greats... aunt in Pennsylvania. She died... mysteriously... and left me everything. Her fortune, her corporation, and this huge estate. But she also left me a note. That note led me to secrets that dated back thousands... tens of thousands of years and laid to rest the question of where we came from, why we were here, and who made us this way.I stumbled onto an ancestry of assassins dedicated to seeing the innocents remain free, and ensuring the plots of secret societies hidden in the shadows never come to pass. Secret societies that always existed, clouded in conspiracy theories, but whose history dates back to the birth of mankind! My great aunt trained me from a toddler to one day take her place... unknown to me... and I was now supposed to simply accept her role as guardian? The choice is clear. I could fade into a privileged lifestyle, ignore the genetic enhancements passed on to me by dead parents, and watch the world fall slowly into chaos, slavery, and total subjugation by those working in the shadows. Or I could take up the mantle of my ancestors and become...The Hawk!

The stories in Gettin' High take place mainly in New York City and Puerto Rico, though three are set in rural Michigan where the author grew up. They transpire during the turbulent decade of the 1960s. As the title suggests, many characters smoke weed and experience its eerie and pleasurable effects. That is one current running through several stories, though not a major theme. Rather, the thematic anchor is the search for love and meaning in a changing, transient world. The characters are generally involved with music, as performers or students, and what it means to become a professional musician. Music as a means to communicate truly with another person is also an important facet of the plot lines in the stories, whether this is on a river tour or on a formal concert stage, and the characters strive to find the essence of their art in various ways. Of course, music goes beyond words, and this musical quest is what propels many of the characters' lives and loves. Also, the real-life business of music is another salient aspect for character development.Three of the stories are set in the rural landscape of the author's youth. Here the theme of the demise of the family farm is set forth against the backdrop of the long transition from an agrarian to an urban life style which has taken place throughout the 20th century. All of the stories in Gettin' High were written many years ago while the author himself was working as a professional musician in the Puerto Rico Symphony. As such, they may seem somewhat dated, since this was a time before iphones, the internet, TikTok and social media. People actually needed to communicate more directly with one another, in a more intimate fashion. And this is reflected in the plots and dialogue of the stories. The roles of men and women were also, for better or worse, more rigidly defined. And this perspective undoubtedly finds its way into the portrayal of the characters as they seek to explore new boundaries and experiences--from the farm to the concert stage to smoking weed--a long trajectory set against the backdrop of the Vietnam war.Though these stories were mostly written over 50 years ago, the author believes that they are still relevant in today's world. The subject of abortion figures in A Love Story as well as interracial love. Also, a forgotten incident of child abuse rears its head in The Hermit as well as performance anxiety in The Recital. The racism still lingering in the South of the early 1960s, and which America is still struggling to truly confront, plays a role in Milly-A Fantasy. And undoubtedly, the transformative potential of music has not diminished over the years--whether it be jazz, the folk music of the 1960s, today's Hip-Hop and Rap or the classical music of the formal, concert stage. Humanity still seems to thrive on music's inherent message of hope and its curative power. Finally, it is the author's hope that, at the very least, readers will find something of themselves in the characters of these tales as they seek out life's ephemeral joys, happiness and fulfillment in today's challenging world.
Perhaps Harrison Hamblin should have known when that body hit the Land Rover's hood. With a huge, unexpected thump. As it slid hesitantly off the hood, next hitting the road's feeble rock barrier, and tumbling into the ravine.Maybe he should have known what his colleague, the Navajo genius Michael ThreeHats, explained. "As my brothers the Apache's would have done. A warning. Turn around, leave our land, or meet our challenges." Harry was naively eager to meet this latest test. So he has accepted the challenge of carrying unknown, probably contraband freight to his old stamping ground, Dar es Sabir (Door of patience). And putting up with the irritable band of Tuaregs who seem be trailing him constantly. And other tests and challenges: Encountering excitable Tuaregs, odd, half-starved pygmies, Jean d'Argent his former manservant, now a successful entrepreneur, a past love and old friends and acquaintances in Dar es Sabir, now a newly declared city-state renamed the Republic of Independent People. The RIP is the fabrication of Wahid, the former revolutionary who conquered Sabir on the third try. And Harry even admired him as a kind of Robin Hood before this revolution. But things had changed. Wahid had become tyrannical, potential foes were "counting dunes," (a euphemism for summary execution), and his father's rumored lost treasure was foremost on his mind. Driving all his decisions. Bad ones.Harry has acquired the name, passport and identity of a German arms dealer who was coincidentally his bunk-mate as he sailed to Algeria. We also soon learn that Wahid is a practicing pedophile, that the reputedly honest judge has compromised his own integrity, and that the beautiful Amina (protagonist for three years in Harry's dreams), has married Wahid but has failed to bear him children. In the background lurks Alain, evil twin to Antoine, the former police chief.
