The Chapters in this little volume may have their message to some who are striving to live near the heart of Christ. It is the hidden life that makes the character. What we are in the depths of our being, where no human eye can penetrate, that we are actually, as God sees us. Then this inner life will ultimately work its way through to the surface, transforming the character into its own quality. Nothing can be more important, therefore, than that the hidden life be true, pure, beautiful, and Christ-like.
"Handfuls of Grass for the Lord's Hungry Sheep"In Green Pastures is a devotional including daily readings for every day in the year. Each day is arranged with space to write your own thoughts. We may not always need a boost to our day but an encouragement or reminder are always helpful and when a genuine boost is needed this book will help to guide."The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters."Psalm 23:1-2
Glimpses Through Life's Windows claims only to give "glimpses." In these hurried days many people have time to read only paragraphs. Ofttimes it happens, too, that merely in a few well-chosen sentences, a lesson is taught or an inspiration given which helps and blesses a life for many days. Many of the paragraphs here gathered contain incidents or illustrations through and by which the truth is presented. Everyone knows the value of good illustrations. They help to make the teaching clear, and they help to fix the lesson in the memory. In these days of young people's societies, - Christian Endeavor and others with like object, - there is a desire for books with short paragraphs suitable for reading by members at the meetings. For this purpose, among others, it is hoped that these "glimpses" may prove of value. The book is sent out in the living hope that its words may stimulate many to a truer, better, richer, holier life. In this earthly state, with its hindrances and weights, we need to be reminded continually that-"He most lives who thinks most, feels the noblest, acts the best."
The Lord's Prayer is short, but every word of it is laden with precious meaning. In its few petitions it covers the whole field of prayer. It is easy to repeat its sentences, for it is hard to say it through as a real prayer, for it means the consecration of our whole life to God, and the submission of will, affections, and service to him. These chapters are not expositions --- they are no more than studies. Their aim is to help in a devotional way by calling attention to the meaning of the several petitions, which too often is lost to our thought because of our familiarity with the sacred words.
Counsel and Help is a collection of daily readings selected from the writings of J. R. Miller. They are specifically selected to help set your mind upon a positive path for that day and carry you through the year. Each day is arranged with space to write your own thoughts.Christian Endeavour Times: "In this admirable series of selections, averaging half a page in length, the sweetness and light which give to all the author's work distinction seem to be focused, and the result is a little book which in its own way is without a peer." James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
The Night of Long Knives is apost-apocolyptic novel taking place after a nuclear holocaust. Survivors are left to wander in a wasteland and survive by scavenging and murdering other people. A new culture of survival has arisen based on random killing. Other cultures also emerge that rekindle technology and are hostile to the nomadic murderers of the land. It is a brutal world that moves by one rule, as epitomized by the epigraph that begins chapter one:"Any man who saw you, or even heard your footsteps must be ambushed, stalked and killed, whether needed for food or not. Otherwise, so long as his strength held out, he would be on your trail."Fritz Reuter Leiber, Jrwas an American fantasy, horror and science fiction writer. He was an expert chess player and a champion fencer.
The Creature from the Cleveland Depths is a modern tale of an inner-directed sorcerer and an outer-directed sorcerer's apprentice. "Every time Gusterson dropped a new free idea into the fad-ridden mainstream world of underground cities and cozy crowds, it crystallized into something really strange, and things got out of hand. So he shouldn't have mentioned the reminder machine...."Fritz Reuter Leiber, Jr was an American fantasy, horror and science fiction writer. He was an expert chess player and a champion fencer. He received the Gandalf award at the World Science Fiction Convention in 1975 and the Grand Master Award at the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 1981.
The New Book of the Martyrs is a result of Georges Duhamel's life changing experience as a doctor in World War I. His stories of Carre and Lerondeau, Verdun, The Death of Mercier and others are thought provoking and emotional. "Someone who had been visiting the wounded said to me: "The beds are really very white, the dressings are clean, all the patients seem to be playing cards, reading the papers, eating dainties; they are simple, often very gentle, they don't look very unhappy. They all tell the same story... The war has not changed them much. One can recognize them all." "Are you sure that you recognize them? You have just been looking at them, are you sure that you have seen them? "Under their bandages are wounds you cannot imagine. Below the wounds, in the depths of the mutilated flesh, a soul, strange and furtive, is stirring in feverish exaltation, a soul which does not readily reveal itself, which expresses itself artlessly, but which I would fain make you understand." Georges Duhamel was a French author. Between 1906 and 1909 he founded l'Abbaye de Créteil with Charles Vildrac. The group brought together poets, writers, musicians and painters. From 1912, he became an editor of the literary review Mercure de France. He trained as a doctor, and during World War I worked as an army surgeon for four years. In 1935, he was elected to the 30th chair at the Académie Française. During World War II Duhamel's work was banned by the Germans. After the war, Duhamel was named president of the Alliance Française and returned to his public speaking.
The Secret of the Ages is Robert Collier's most famous work. It was inspiration for the movie The Secret and continues to inspire millions. Fascinated with the power of the mind and how to use it to create success in every area Collier teaches how one can utilize abilities within each of us to materialize desires. It's not magic, just focused attention and a positive mind. In the forward of The Secret of the Ages Collier writes;"If you had more money than time, more millions than you knew how to spend, what would be your pet philanthropy? Libraries? Hospitals? Churches? Homes for the Blind, Crippled or Aged? Mine would be "Homes"-but not for the aged or infirm. For young married couples!" What would your quest be if you were in the position to be able to give more? The Secret of the Ages may help you attain that position and help you answer this question.Robert Collier was an author of self-help, and New Thought metaphysical books in the 20th century. Collier wrote about the practical psychology of abundance, desire, faith, visualization, confident action, and becoming your best.
"Dr. Miller's genius is seen at its best in this book, and many as have been the expositions of that wonderful discourse of our Lord's, 'The Master's Blesseds' takes a place which none of the others have filled. And not only for the tender and beautiful manner in which the exposition is unfolded, but also for the fresh suggestions with which it teems."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
"A theological professor used to say to his students, "Never fail in any service to have at least a word of comfort. No congregation, however small, ever assembles, but there is in it one person in sorrow, who will go away unhelped, if in scripture lesson, hymn or prayer, there is nothing to lift up a heavy heart.""No book for devotional reading would be complete, however full of other lessons, if it contained nothing for those who are in sorrow. In this little volume special prominence is given to the ministry of comfort, in the hope that the book may make some hearts braver and stronger in the hard and painful ways of life. It is affectionately dedicated to those who are called to pass through trial."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
"Suddenly there was such a violent earthquakethat the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, andeverybody's chains fell off!" Acts 16:26There is no prison too strong for God to break open;there are no chains too heavy for Him to snap asunder, there are no walls too thick for Him to shatter. There are other kinds of prisons besides those builtwith stone--prisons of trial, of temptation, of trouble,of circumstances. If we are in any of these prisons,God is just as able to bring us out of them!James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
Practical Religion is a collection of chapters written out of the author's own experience in the hope that they may do a little, at least, to make the path plainer for others. It is not meant to show people an easy way of living - there is no easy way to live worthily - but it seeks to show why it is worthwhile to live earnestly, at whatever cost.Practical Religion is designed to be a companion to Week-Day Religion, which met with wide favor and has been used by the Master to help many people over the hard places and up to a fuller, richer life. Practical Religion is sent forth in the hope that it may have a ministry of encouragement, stimulus, comfort or strength in some lives of toil, care, struggle or sorrow.James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
We all want to make our lives beautiful. We are God's children, and should live as those who have heaven's glory in their souls. We have within us immortal possibilities, and he is as one dead who does not strive to realize the beauty that is folded up in his life.A beautiful life is one that fulfills its mission. In Secrets of a Beautiful Life J. R. Miller aims to guide us through our mission. "Every man's life is a plan of God." One who attains that for which he was made lives beautifully, however lowly his life may be. The aim is to keep God's commandments, to do God's will, to realize God's purpose. James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
"The point at which many Christians fail in the using of divine truths is the point at which doctrine should be transmuted into life. They know and honor the Bible as the word of God, and sincerely wish to conform their lives to its inspired teachings, but have difficulty in applying them to the actual experiences of daily life. This book is offered as a humble help in this direction. Its aim is to bring the divine lessons down, and give some hints of the way they may be used on common days and in the actual experiences of those days."The title, Silent Times, is suggestive of the need of seasons of quiet in every life that would grow into full, rich beauty. It is suggestive also of one particular use that may be made of the book, - the reading of its chapters, or portions of them, in the Silent Times, of busy, feverish days, as helps in the direction of true Christian growth. The book is sent out in Christ's name, and with the hope that it may make the way a little plainer for some earnest pilgrims, and religion a little more real, and that it may become a lamp for some dark ways, and a staff for some rough and steep paths."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
ZIONISMAmong the persons of the educated classes who follow with any attention all the more important movements of the times, it would now be difficult to find one to whom the word "Zionism" is quite unknown. People are generally aware that it describes an idea and a movement that in the last years has found numerous adherents among the Jews of all countries, but especially among those of the East. Comparatively few, however, both among the Gentiles and the Jews themselves, have a perfectly clear notion of the aims and ways of Zionism; the Gentiles, because they do not care sufficiently for Jewish affairs to take the trouble to inform themselves at first hand as to the particulars; the Jews, because they are intentionally led astray by the enemies of Zionism, by lies and calumnies, or because even among the fervent Zionists there are not many who have probed the whole Zionist idea to the bottom, and are willing or able to present it in a clear and comprehensible fashion, without exaggeration and polemical heat.I will endeavor to furnish readers of good faith, who are not biased, and have no other interest than that of gaining authentic information about a phenomenon in contemporary history, as concisely and soberly as possible with all the facts, as they really are, not as they are reflected in muddled brains, or distorted and falsified by calumniators.THE TRUE NATURE OF ANTI-SEMITISM IN EUROPEAnti-Semitism would be simply ridiculous if it were not so terribly in earnest. People who make that word a war cry upon a whole race ought to know its meaning, especially if it is to express the chief reason for their hostility. Before they prefix the "anti" to a word they should be sure that they understand the "pro," lest they be found to fight shadows merely, specters of their own creation. But how far is this the case? How many ever tried to learn the sense of the designation under which they have enrolled themselves? Suppose we ask, "What does Semitism mean?" Only this, must be our answer,-that it is a summing up of the ruling dispositions, habits, mental endowments, and moral peculiarities of all the races comprised under the name of Semites, so named from their supposed descent from the eldest of the three sons of Noah. So ineradicable are these features supposed to be that, no matter where the races have lived or are now living, no matter what stage of civilization they have passed through or have reached now, no matter what influence non-Semitic races have exercised upon them, they remain essentially the same. What are these features? Who will formulate the precise standard by which a descendant of Shem is unfailingly known and set apart from those of Ham or Japhet? When we consider that we are pointed back for the meaning of Semite to antediluvian times, that is to say, to one of the oldest myths of the world, we must admit that it would indeed be the wonder of wonders if a large section of mankind have a family likeness so clear that they are marked off from the rest. And this, despite the long ages that have passed since the supposed separation of the sons of Noah and their wide dispersion; despite their triumphs and defeats in wars, in state building, and church formation; despite the wide diversity between them in their literature, their philosophy, their art, their trades and industries. Are the Semites still characterized by the same gifts and tendencies of mind and heart, ruled by the same passions, subject to the same limitations, as were their ancestors in all their generations?
Your Forces and How to Use Them by Christian D. Larson will give you the key to power lying within you. A remarkable book that has helped readers achieve seemingly impossible heights in life by learning how to harness the incredible force of the subconscious."There are a million energies in man. What may we not become when we learn to use them all?" "This is the declaration of the poet; and though poetry is usually inspired by transcendental visions, and therefore more or less impressed with apparent exaggerations, nevertheless there is in this poetic expression far more actual, practical truth than we may at first believe."Christian D. Larson was a New Thought leader and teacher, a prolific author of metaphysical and New Thought books. He is credited by Horatio Dresser as being a founder in the New Thought movement. His writings influenced notable New Thought authors and leaders.
"These chapters contain simple lessons, intended to incite to braver, stronger, truer living. We live well only when down here on earthly levels we catch the breath of heaven and are impelled toward things that are worthwhile. To be moved only by the lower earthly currents is to miss all that is best in life."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
"Recently a little book was published bearing the title: "Girls: Faults and Ideals." It contained quotations from letters of a number of young men concerning the points indicated in the title. Many young ladies have written to the author suggesting that there should be a book bearing on the Faults and Ideals of young men, and that the young ladies should have an opportunity to show their opinion. This seemed a fair and proper request, and this little book is the result."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
"Home is among the holiest of words. A true home is one of the most sacred of places. It is a sanctuary into which men flee from the world's perils and alarms. It is a resting-place to which at close of day the weary retire to gather new strength for the battle and toils of tomorrow. It is the place where love learns its lessons, where life is schooled into discipline and strength, where character is molded. Out of the homes of a community comes the life of the community, as a river from the thousand springs that gush out on the hillsides.""This little book may come into the hands of some whose home happiness has been shattered - its torn fragments lying now on the ground. It would be a comfort to the author if these simple words should put fresh hope into a discouraged heart, and thus be the hand to help restore the home to its true place, amid the branches of the tree of love."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
"Learning to love is a long lesson. It takes all of the longest life to learn it. The most inveterate obstacle in mastering the lesson is self, which persists with an energy which nothing but divine grace can overcome. When no longer we seek our own in any of our relations with others, we have learned to love. Until then we still need to stay in Christ's school."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
"The real power in Sunday School teaching is not methods, important as it is to have the best of these, nor in equipment, valuable as this is, but in the teacher's own spiritual life. "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit," is the divine revealing of the secret of power in all Christian work. "It is the aim of these simple chapters to put emphasis upon some of the vital elements in the Sunday School teacher's life and work."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
"The battle was over. Two mighty armies had met in terrific conflict, and the earth had quivered beneath the shock. Great destinies had been decided. "After the battle, gentle women came upon the field, and went quietly and quickly among the wounded and dying with water and wine and food, and words of cheer and kindness. "There was diviner power in the ministry of these angels of comfort who came after the battle, when all was still, than in the awful force of the battle itself. "We are strong only as we are gentle. Gentleness is the power of God working in the world."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
"Perfect Peace!" That is what we all want. That, too, is what Christ offers us in his gospel. Among his farewell words we find this bequest: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you." After his return from the grave he said to his disciples, three times repeating the same benediction, "Peace be unto you." Peace is thus part of the blessed evangel, and an essential element of true and full Christian life. Christ desires us to have peace. If we do not have it we have missed part of the blessing of being a Christian, part of our inheritance as children of God. It is not a peculiar privilege which is only for a favored few; it is for everyone who believes in Christ and will accept it.James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
The purpose for In His Steps is to help those who are beginning the Christian life. J. R. Miller includes suggestions and counsel to new Christians as to what to expect from being a Christian and includes subjects such as; Uniting With the Church, Living for God, Meeting Temptation, Preparation for Trial, and more.James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Don't worry! There's not be a shorter synopsis to A Cure For Care. This small book of J. R. Mill is packed with power, a power to help us all live far less stressful lives."...we are God's children, and should trust our Father's loving thought for us. He is able to provide for us and keep us in safety and peace in all our experiences. Surely it is not fitting that the children of the heavenly Father should worry!""Many people seem never to understand that they must learn how to live. They suppose that they were sent into life just as they are to go through life, and do not realize that there are a great many things in them that need to be changed, many that require to be made over altogether. It comes naturally to no one to live well, to live ideally. We have many things to overcome, faults to correct, undisciplined power, to bring under control, hindrances to subdue and change into helps."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
"We are set in this world to be happy. We should not falter in our great task of happiness, nor move ever among our fellows with shadows on our face when we ought to have sunlight."We have a mission to others - to add to their cheer. This we cannot do unless we have first learned the lesson of cheerfulness ourselves. We cannot teach what we do not know. We cannot give what we do not have."In this little book a lesson is set for you, my reader. It may seem a hard lesson to learn; nevertheless, it is one you want to learn, and one you can learn, if you will surrender your life wholly to the great Teacher."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.
The Joy of Service gives us a view of service often missed by the world. It is though service to others that we gain joyfulness in our own life. In reading you will find strength and a desire to at first search out ways to serve others. In time your life will be one of service without thought and one of peace. "THESE fragments of lessons may have their mission of helpfulness to some who are earnestly striving to grow into a braver, truer, richer-hearted life, and to become inspirers of others in their efforts and struggles."James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run.
