When Grandpa was a boy, he befriended a creature on the family farm who could be invisible to human eye. This creature sat on the shoulder of Jack (Grandpa) and, being invisible, guided Jack with answers to exams and other problems. The friendship lasted all of Jack's life and even helped him, as an adult, with business problems and decisions, so that his grandchildren also had access to this knowledge and guidance. This story is based on family farms in East Anglia, which have records for the last 1000 years and the ebb and flow of different cultures. The basic wildlife has remained little changed this last 1000 years other than wolves dying out, but the forests that covered all of the areas have gone and so the creatures supported by them have been reduced. In this story, the Guardian maintains the balance and still uses his five-year calendar gold hat (German museums have some of these dating from the Bronze Age). It was the spread of arable farming that needed these tall hats and grassland farming calendar hats were less high. Much old knowledge on astronomy and seasonal cycles was lost when the hat use and class of people who interpreted their information were done away with by incoming Christians who melted down the gold hats to fund the first churches.

Then foreign correspondent for the Financial Times, key development officer in Zambia at the time of independence, alternative educationist in Botswana. He founded a think tank in the UK to promote justice and fairness in the workplace through employee ownership, an economic model that he took to Eastern Europe in the 1990s. Conversations with My Dog by Hannah Gold is a tale for those who love to seek new adventures and the promise of following their dreams, or nose, into the unknown. In a fast-paced world, driven by material achievement and the fear of loss; clarity can seem hard to find. Sometimes answers can come from the most surprising sources. When the author found herself confronted with challenges, she discovered, to her surprise, that wisdom came not from a philosophical master or spiritual guide, but her puppy named Monty. On the road with him, she learns to stop and ask him questions. He answers her through demonstrating the values of simplicity, fun and love of exploration. This description of the conversations that developed between them is a tale about rediscovering direction in life. It gives a light-hearted, gently thought-provoking account of the bigger journey of working out how to live. The search for the way ahead is the metaphor that illustrates the eternal bond of loyalty between a dog and its humanand makes this tale transcend normal conversation. 'Even when we are in small bodies, we have big spirits.' Writes Hannah Gold, relaying the replies of her wise four-legged friend, to her questions about life. 'The very young always know why they are here. Because they haven't forgotten. Sometimes life muddles things up with too many thoughts. But the heart is ageless.'Hannah's illustrations were created from sketches she made of Monty on their travels. These drawings provide a visual tapestry, depicting their journey together to inspire readers in finding their own path. Conversations with My Dog is an ideal companion for people considering significant change or embarking on a new direction, however uncertain, or even just searching for a little extra companionship and inspiration.

Things Still Fall Apart shows that Africa is a neglected and exploited continent. Since it was invaded c.1500 by Europeans, it has accumulated only 1 per cent of the world's wealth, despite containing 16 per cent of the world's population and immense natural and human resources. This collection of memories by a Brazilian economist, from his 20 years working on the continent, explains that this relative stationary situation is caused mostly by political decisions. Political decisions made on behalf of domestic rulers and rich countries; meanwhile, the poor have no voice or power. The book challenges many historical narratives of the continent and unveils issues such as negative primitive accumulation and the politics of sexuality. The findings of this book reflect the reality of the poor and may be considered alarming and challenging - they need special attention and funding. If not, further stagnation, civil conflicts and migratory waves will persist. As a result, suffering for poor and future costs for rich countries will increase.

What happens to us when we die? Does heaven really exist? If so, what does the afterlife look like? Although death happens to everyone eventually, we know little about the process and the only way that we can get answers is to talk to someone who is already there. Through channelled mediumship communication with a spirit called Battrick, this book attempts to answer some of those questions. The spirit world wants us to know that the essence of who we are does not die with our physical body. We are all spiritual beings having an earthly experience and the energy that is 'us' cannot be destroyed; this life is not all there is.
