Translated by Dr. Philip Khûri Hitti in 1916, The Origins of the Islamic State, or the Kitâb Futû¿ al-Buldân in Arabic, was an unparalleled source of Islamic history and culture in the early 20th century, and is still renowned today as one of the greatest accounts of Arabic history. This book is coveted for its historical tracing of events to the source, despite the work being incomplete as much of the original manuscripts were lost after the sixteenth century. This made the work especially difficult to translate, but even so, it remains one of the most well-documented accounts of Muslim history. The work covers the conquest of nations such as Arabia, Syria, Mesopotamia, Armenia, Africa, and Persia. The Futû¿ al-Buldân is widely-recognized as author al-Biladuri's chief surviving work, and was oft used by later historians to write their own Arabic histories.AHMAD BIN YAHYA BIN JABIR AL BILADURI (d. 892) was a Persian historian from the Ninth Century, considered today as a reliable source of early Arabic and Islamic history, particularly of the Muslim expansion. He lived at the court of the caliphs Al-Mutawakkil and Al-Musta'in in Baghdad, and served as tutor to al-Mutazz's son. He died in 892 from an overdose of the drug baladhur (from which Al Biladuri's name is derived).
Myths and Legends of Babylonia and Assyria, originally published in November 1916, is a beautiful book that includes explanations of Babylonian and Assyrian legends and myths as well as the myths themselves. Lewis Spence, in the Preface, describes his purpose in writing the book as providing the reader with "the treasures of romance latent in the subject, the peculiar richness of which has been recognized since the early days of archaeological effort in Chaldea." Presented here with original illustrations and bookplates of paintings, drawings, and pictures concerning the myths, this book is a classic addition to any library. LEWIS SPENCE (1874-1955) was a Scottish journalist who recorded Scottish folklore, myths and legends from around the world, histories and legends about the lost world of Atlantis, and works on the occult. Spence graduated from Edinburgh University and was the editor of three magazines, The Scotsman, The Edinburgh Magazine, and The British Weekly. He also founded the Scottish National Movement, now known as the Scottish National Party.
In this single volume, readers will find two of John Dewey's insightful essays on education in America. He considered proper education to be fundamental to a functioning democracy. The problem, according to Dewey in The School and Society, with the old education model was that elementary schools did not encourage exploration and curiosity in their students. In The Child and the Curriculum, Dewey expands upon his definition of the ideal teaching method. A child's life, he says, is an integrated whole. A child will flow from one topic to another, taking a natural interest in subjects and dealing with a world of direct experience. School, on the other hand, addresses a world disconnected from a child's life. A more reasonable approach would be to strive to integrate their experience with the vast body of knowledge that society wishes them to know. By honoring the individual, both the student and the subject matter will come together in a process that produces a mature adult.American educator and philosopher JOHN DEWEY (1859-1952) helped found the American Association of University Professors. He served as professor of philosophy at Columbia University from 1904 to 1930 and authored numerous books, including How We Think (1910), Experience and Nature (1925), Experience and Education (1938), and Freedom and Culture (1939).
Stabilizing and securing Pakistan's border with Afghanistan is a key goal of the Global War on Terror, and vital if the threat from Al Qaeda to the United States and the world is to be mitigated. Despite the effort of more than six years and expenditures of billions of dollars-some of it in aid to Pakistan for its own efforts in this measure-the goal remains unmet. This frank report, from the United States Government Accountability Office, assesses the current lack of a comprehensive plan for achieving this important objective and lays out a plan for moving forward. From the military element of such an effort-including the training and equipping of frontier corps-to the law-enforcement challenges of implementing border security to how diplomacy and economic development can help.Anyone who wishes to more fully understand the prosecution of the Global War on Terror will find this essential and informative reading.
Speculation is no simple business..Indeed, speculation requires broader knowledge, closer attention, sounder judgment than the average business. Published in 1930, on the heels of America's greatest depression, Philip L. Carret's classic is a perceptive and complete examination of speculation and its vital role in our economy. Carret, a Wall Street legend and founder of one of the first mutual funds, was one of the greatest minds tackling the intricacies of business, finance, and speculation. With clarity and precision, he presents the history of the profession, the relationship between speculation and business, and the fundamentals-bonds, securities, derivatives, and stocks, as well as the more complex areas of analysis, margins, and arbitrage. Not one detail is overlooked. In the final chapter, Carret distills the essence of his wisdom into 10 Commandments for Speculators. There is brilliance in their simplicity-in fact, it is clear why Warren Buffett once called Carret one of the greatest investors of all time. Even now it is hard to imagine success without a commitment to these rules.
