This book applies the specific to explain the general. It takes one song, written in the mid 1930s, and uses it to address larger issues regarding popular music in the twentieth century. The song- "I Can't Get Started With You"-is discussed in considerable detail, but so is jazz and its connection with the musical theater, the early lives and collaborations of the song's creators, the nature of lyric writing, the structure of the popular song, the legacy of George Gershwin, the musicians who performed and recorded "I Can't Get Started" (its common title), and the later lives, independent musical contributions, and legacies of Vernon Duke and Ira Gershwin.
Jonathan Tibbet was born in 1856 near the San Gabriel Mission and considered himself a true Californian. Several indian villages were located on the family rancho and this is where young Jonathan acquired a life-long relationship with Native Americans. This individualist was a shrewd businessman who made numerous enemies. However, he and his wife, Emma, were well-known for their frequent gatherings and warm hospitality. Their home on Prospect Avenue had been developed into a pleasing private garden covering some three acres.During the 1920s, Mission Indian Federation conferences were held on the Tibbet property and surrounding streets, where hundreds of indian families camped for a week twice a year.
The 73 letters of Edwin Hall Higley detail his experiences in the American Civil War as a 2nd lieutenant for the First Vermont Cavalry and his life after the war as a musician and professor. Along the way he successfully defended himself against charges of cowardice stemming from an incident with Confederate raider John Mosby and survived the rigors of a prisoner of war in 1864. The letters to his close friend Calvin Day Noble also provide insights into the world of popular culture of the era punctuated by Higley's love of the theater and musical performers. Higley entered the war following his freshman year at Middlebury College in Vermont and his perspective while on the staff of officers such as George Custer and Winfield Scott Hancock reflect that level of education. Besides his view of battles such as the Shenandoah, Brandy Station and the famous Kilpatrick-Dahlgren raid, Higley gives us poignant views of camp life and the personal trials of a Civil War soldier. Vermont's Proper Son is a beneficial read for anyone interested in the Civil War or that romantic era of American life which shaped the religious, social or cultural character of men such as Edwin Higley.
