The book envisages the use of under-water electric field for catching fish. The use of electricity for catching fish has been practiced from a long time by the fishermen of different regions, the recorded evidence of which goes to 1886, when one Mr. Isham Bagg was issued a patent in Britain for catching fish with electricity. The author is the first person, who undertook fishing with electric seine as early as 1962 in Odisha, and in 2015 by developing an electric fish catcher. Originally, after several studies on fish electrophysiology, in different countries, the technique was applied in freshwater fisheries, like, streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs, mainly for research and investigations and fisheries management. In this book, the author has tried to compile the basic principles of electrofishing system, with reference to design, construction and field application with the precautions and safety measures to be followed while construction and use of the electrofishing gear not only for the operational crews, but also for the fishes to avoid unnecessary mortality and injuries. The experiments and trial of electrofishing in sea water, particularly, of pulse trawling for flat fish, Hovercran shrimp trawling, and experiments with pelagic fishes in design criteria for electrical fish harvesting systems, which includes netless fish harvesting and mid-water electric trawling have find place in the book. The principal system components of electric fishing machine, its design consideration, power transmission, both from battery operated backpack and boat mounted electrode array and the factors affecting the efficiency of electrical fishing gear have been taken into account in the book.
Desertification is land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities. This process has already affected one sixth of the world's population, 70% of all dry lands of 3.6 billion hectares, and one quarter of the total land area of the world. The most obvious impact of desertification, in addition to widespread poverty, is the degradation of 3.3 billion hectares of the total area of rangeland, constituting 73% of the rangeland with a low potential for human and animal carrying capacity; decline in soil fertility and soil structure on about 47% of the dryland areas constituting marginal rainfed cropland; and the degradation of irrigated cropland, amounting to 30% of the dry land areas with a high population density and agricultural potential. Keeping the above in view, the NAM S&T Centre in partnership with the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad organised an International Workshop on 'Drought Management and Desertification Control' during 22-24 May 2017 at Ferdowsi University, Mashhad, Iran which brought various stake holders, viz. scientists, experts and professionals engaged in R&D, policy making and implementation, to a common platform for up gradation of their skills and sharing views and experiences in the drought management and desertification control. As a follow up of the above workshop, the present book - 'Drought Management and Desertification Control- Still Miles to Go' - has been edited by Dr. R.P. Dhir and Dr. Kisamba Mugerwa. There are 14 scientific technical papers contributed by the experts from 10 countries. The book is expected to be of great value to all those associated in combating desertification and drought for sustainable food production including the researchers, local communities, rural agencies, national governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and regional and international organisations.
Climate change is a big challenge to the mankind. It is well known that the earth's atmosphere is growing warmer due to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions generated by human activity and extensive use of fossil fuels in every sphere of life which is leading to visible climate change across the globe and is also threatening to wipe out the human presence in many regions of the world. The 21st Conference of the Parties - COP21 - to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Paris in 2015 reaffirmed the target of keeping the rise in temperature below 2°C. Evolving Energy Models is about practice rather than theory, commencing with the information already possessed by the countries in climatically vulnerable systems such as agriculture, water resources, public health and disaster management, and aims at exploiting the existing synergies and intersecting themes. These Energy Models can be used by the countries to both evaluate and complement the existing planning processes to address climate change adaptations. In order to exhaustively deliberate on above issues, the Centre for Science & Technology of the (NAM S&T Centre) organised the 4th Triennial International Workshop on "Evolving Energy Models in Emerging Economies - COP 21" in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India during 12-14 December 2016 in partnership with the Society of Energy Engineers and Managers (SEEM), India. As a follow up the papers submitted by the participants were compiled and have been brought out in the form of the present book, which has been edited by Dr. Sasi K Kottayil, President, Society of Energy Engineers and Managers (SEEM), India. The book contains 15 scientific / technical papers contributed by the experts from 10 countries. The book is expected to be of great value to the researchers, policy experts and technology service providers, business, civil societies and multi-lateral agencies amongst developing countries on ensuring universal access to modern energy services, financing their clean energy sources as well as taking measures of adaptation to the effects of global warming within the perspective of 'Emerging Energy Models' initiative.

Soil is a complex structure and encompasses five major components i.e. mineral matter, water, air, organic matter and living organisms. Soil pollution with heavy metals has become a critical environmental concern due to its potential adverse ecological impacts. The rapid industrialization and intensive agricultural activities over the last few decades have resulted in accumulation of various pollutants in the environment, which are distributed over wide areas by means of air and water. This type of contamination typically arises from the application of pesticides, percolation of contaminated surface water to subsurface strata, oil and fuel dumping, leaching of wastes from landfills or direct discharge of industrial wastes on land. During the past decades, the prevention of soil pollution and cleanup of contaminated soils have become a world-wide environmental priority. The goal of soil bioremediation is not only limited to enhance the timely degradation, transformation, remediation, or detoxification of these pollutants by biological means, but also to protect soil quality. The present book is an attempt to introduce several approaches by various scientist and researchers for soil remediation and risk assessment, including advances in phytoremediation and implementation of metabolomics in soil sciences.
