Seabuckthorn (Hippophae L.) is a multipurpose shrub or small tree, which grows widely in high altitude cold regions of Asia (Indian Himalayas and China), Europe. It has also been introduced in North America and South America. The plant has potential in food, cosmetics and health protection and environmental conservation. 'Climate Change' is a matter of great concern at the global level since it is leading to causing weather-related disasters and in making communities more vulnerable to the effects of disasters. There is need for disaster mitigation measures to reduce or if possible, totally eliminate the impacts and risks of hazards through proactive measures taken before an emergency or disaster occurs. For alleviating the risk of disaster due to severe climate events, there has been a growing need for a concrete platform to educate and train the individuals and entities in the developing world and network with them to act beyond the disaster management policies. Keeping this in view, the NAM S&T Centre in partnership with the National Science & Technology Commission (NASTEC) of Sri Lanka organised an international workshop on 'Mitigation of Disasters due to Severe Climate Events: From Policy to Practice' in Colombo, Sri Lanka during 10-13 March 2016. The workshop was attended by 64 senior professionals from 19 countries - Cambodia, Egypt, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Thailand, Uganda, Venezuela, Zambia and Zimbabwe, and the host country Sri Lanka for sharing views and experiences for the development of a road map for reducing the risks in real situations. The present book edited by Prof. Joaquin Alejandro Linayo Rivero, Prof. Jayant K. Routray and Prof. Biswajeet Pradhan is a follow up of the Colombo Workshop comprising 17 scientific and technical papers contributed by the experts from 15 countries. Minerals are an essential component of the nation's resources base towards economic development. In this context, the Centre for Science & Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre) had organised a series of three International Workshops and the latest 3rd International Workshop on 'Mineral Processing and Beneficiation' was held in Harare, Zimbabwe during 11-14 September 2014 jointly with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development and the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development of the Republic of Zimbabwe. The workshop was attended by 110 participants from 15 countries representing Afghanistan, Guyana, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nigeria, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, Zambia and of which 89 delegates were from the host country Zimbabwe. The present book, edited by Dr. G. Padmanabham is a follow up of Harare Workshop comprising 14 scientific and technical papers contributed by the experts from 12 countries. The interest of man in nature goes back to his own origin and history. A sudden explosion in human population and multifarious need of man has put the existence of natural resources to a stake. Majority of original natural resources have been reducing to secondary resources with low productivity hence the extent of wild area is also decreased significantly. Earth is the only place in the universe known to sustain life. Humanity's relationship with the biosphere will continue to deteriorate until a new international economic order is achieved, a new environmental ethic adopted, human populations stabilize, and sustainable modes of development become the rule rather than the exception. Among the prerequisites for sustainable development is the conservation of living resources. the management of human use of the biosphere so that it may yield the greatest sustainable benefit to present generations while maintaining its potential to meet the needs and aspirations of future generations. Thus conservation is positive, embracing preservation, maintenance, sustainable utilization, restoration, and enhancement of the natural environment. Living resource conservation is specifically concerned with plants, animals and microorganisms, and with those non-living elements of the environment on which they depend. Living resources have two important properties, the combination of which distinguishes them from non-living resources: they are renewable if conserved; and they are destructible if not.

Sheep and goats have served poor people's most reliable livelihood resource since their domestication during Neolithic Revolution. Worldwide over 100 million people in arid areas, have only possible source of livelihood by grazing small ruminants. Grazing sheep and goats can improve soil and vegetation cover and plant and animal biodiversity. Sheep and goats thrive well in varied climatic conditions, get adapted easily to environment, require less care and management and are suitable for meat, milk, wool, skins and manure production. Mutton and Chowan is consumed throughout the country without involving any religious taboo. Together, the goat and sheep rearing households constitute 15 per cent of the total number of households in the country. Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) process has become the basis of development agenda of the nations. The role of STI is well recognised in bringing about the transition of relatively lower end economic performance into high value added activities. In this scenario, the governments and industry professionals as well as those in non-governmental organisations in a large number of developing countries face problems in meeting the challenges from the fast pace of technological changes, whereas for designing the blueprints and strategic implementation frameworks to provide a planned transformation within countries and organisations, it is absolutely critical to have experts who understand the dynamics of science and technology within the context of economic and market development. In order to discuss the above issues, the Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre) organised an International Training Programme on STI Policy and Management for Developing Countries (ITPS) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 8-12 August 2016. The main objective of the training programme was to impart necessary knowledge and skills to participants in the development and management of a national STI policy in support of social-economic transformation. This programme brought various stakeholders, viz. scientists, experts and professionals from various countries with emerging economies together to hone up their skills on STI Policy. This book comprises 13 papers from the researchers and professionals of 12 countries. The book is expected to be of great value to the researchers, policy makers and government officials of the developing countries who are engaged in international science and technology cooperation and deal with diplomatic negotiations on S&T affairs.

Insect pests pose a challenge to the efficient horticultural fruit production especially in Kashmir valley, as horticulture sector constitutes 60 per cent of the state's economy. Fruit industry of Kashmir valley is prone to insect attack and can flourish if the losses due to insect pests are kept under check. In order to obtain optimal production of horticulture fruits crops and compete at global level in terms of productivity, knowledge about insect pests, their biology, bionomics and management is of paramount importance. This information could be best used to devise suitable management practices so that insect pests are controlled before they could cause severe infestation and subsequent loss of quality produce. Haemoprotozoan parasitic diseases remains one of the major hurdles for raising livestock profitability. The trypanosomes were first isolated from animals in undivided India. After independence, with the introduction of cross breeding programme throughout the country, the prevalence of haemoprotozoan parasitic diseases especially theileriosis, babesiosis and anaplasmosis in bovines increased significantly and drew attention of policy makers. Since then the haemoprotozoan diseases in animals are considered as important diseases and needs a special care for their control. Being transmitted by vectors very often such parasites remain refractory to the conventional control measures. Moreover the tropical climate prevailing in the country let both vectors and parasites to propagate abundantly. In this book we tried to describe the details of various diagnostic procedures for early detection, treatment and as well as control and preventive measures.
