The fall of 2016 saw the release of the widely popular First World War video game Battlefield 1. Upon the game's initial announcement and following its subsequent release, Battlefield 1 became the target of an online racist backlash that targeted the game's inclusion of soldiers of color. Across social media and online communities, players loudly proclaimed the historical inaccuracy of black soldiers in the game and called for changes to be made that correct what they considered to be a mistake that was influenced by a supposed political agenda. Through the introduction of the theoretical framework of the 'White Mythic Space', this book seeks to investigate the reasons behind the racist rejection of soldiers of color by Battlefield 1 players in order to answer the question: Why do individuals reject the presence of people of African descent in popular representations of history?

These essays, written in the course of half a century of research and thought on German and Jewish history, deal with the uniqueness of a phenomenon in its historical and philosophical context. Applying the "classical" empirical tools to this unprecedented historical chapter, Kulka strives to incorporate it into the continuum of Jewish and universal history. At the same time he endeavors to fathom the meaning of the ideologically motivated mass murder and incalculable suffering. The author presents a multifaceted, integrative history, encompassing the German society, its attitudes toward the Jews and toward the anti-Jewish policy of the Nazi regime; as well as the Jewish society, its self-perception and its leadership.

Als Deutschland und Italien 1941 den Unabhängigen Staat Kroatien (NDH) schufen und damit die faschistische Ustascha an die Macht brachten, schafften sie beste Voraussetzungen für eines der dunkelsten Kapitel der jugoslawischen Geschichte: Bis zum Ende des Krieges bestimmten Massengewalt, Verfolgungen, ethnische Säuberungen, Flucht und Bürgerkrieg den "Alltag" der Bevölkerung. Doch sollten sich beide Länder ebenfalls in den Fallstricken ihrer eigenen Machtpolitik verfangen. Sie blieben nämlich vor Ort als Besatzer, Kriegsparteien und Politiktreibende. Der NDH bietet somit ein Brennglas, um die nationalsozialistischen und die faschistischen Vorstellungen von Imperium, Besatzung und Machtdurchsetzung zu untersuchen. Die Autorin analysiert auf einer breiten Quellenbasis aus deutschen, italienischen, serbischen und kroatischen Archiven die deutsche und die italienische Besatzungspolitik und insbesondere auch das Verhalten gegenüber der Lokalbevölkerung.

Period boundaries provide essential order to the past. This order, however, can be a mixed blessing, opening our eyes to some changes and continuities, whilst inevitably blinding us to others. In this volume an international group of historians and literary scholars remedies some of these blind spots, challenging accepted European period markers and showing how the way we periodise affects not only research, but also the course of history itself.

The book analyzes the place of religious difference in late modernity through a study of the role played by Jews and Muslims in the construction of contemporary Spanish national identity. The focus is on the transition from an exclusive, homogeneous sense of collective Self toward a more pluralistic, open and tolerant one in an European context. This process is approached from different dimensions. At the national level, it follows the changes in nationalist historiography, the education system and the public debates on national identity. At the international level, it tackles the problem from the perspective of Spanish foreign policy towards Israel and the Arab-Muslim states in a changing global context. From the social-communicational point of view, the emphasis is on the construction of the Self-Other dichotomy (with Jewish and Muslim others) as reflected in the three leading Spanish newspapers.

Zionism, the German Empire, and Africa explores the impact on the self-perception and culture of early Zionism of contemporary constructions of racial difference and of the experience of colonialism in imperial Germany. More specifically, interrogating in a comparative analysis material ranging from mainstream satirical magazines and cartoons to literary, aesthetic, and journalistic texts, advertisements, postcards and photographs, monuments and campaign medals, ethnographic exhibitions and publications, popular entertainment, political speeches, and parliamentary reports, the book situates the short-lived but influential Zionist satirical magazine Schlemiel (1903-07) in an extensive network of nodal clusters of varying and shifting significance and with differently developed strains of cohesion or juncture that roughly encompasses the three decades from 1890 to 1920.
