The Wild West provided the setting for some famous battles, but the gunfight at O.K. Corral doesn't hold a candle to the Bone Wars. Following the Civil War, the (Re-)United States turned its attention to the unexplored territories between the Mississippi and the Pacific. The railroads led the way, and to build them we blasted through mountains and leveled valleys and exposed rock that hadn't seen the light of day for millions of years. This is the story of Edwin Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles Marsh, two scientists who found and fought for those bones, and the artist Charles R. Knight who almost single-handedly brought dinosaurs back to life for an awestruck public. Guest starring Chief Red Cloud and hundreds of his Indian Braves, the gun-totin' and gamblin' Professor John Bell Hatcher, colossal and stupefying Dinosauria of the New World, and featuring special appearances by The Cardiff Giant, P.T. Barnum, Buffalo Bill Cody, Ulysses S. Grant, Alexander Graham Bell, and a plentiful supporting cast of Rogues and Gallants from the Eastern Scientific Establishment and The Old West, the colorful supporting cast makes for a rich blend of history, adventure, science, and art.

Gates of Empire presents eight of Robert E. Howard's classic adventure stories, all of which are set during the Crusades. "Red Blades of Black Cathay" finds a 12th Century Norman Crusader on the Eastern frontiers of the world as it was known to his European contemporaries, rallying a rich but militarily weak splinter kingdom against the invading hordes of Genghis Khan. "Hawks of Outremer" and "Blood of Belshazzar" feature a hard-bitten knight, the half-Irish Cormac FitzGeoffrey, during the time of the Third Crusade. "The Sowers of the Thunder" pits two evenly matched characters against one another: Red Cahal is an exiled Irish prince who has been cheated out of kingship. The red-haired Baibars the Panther is a former slave who will one day seize a throne. Figuratively, one man will be thedeath of the other, and in a sense this is Howard's version of Poe's classic :William Wilson," played out against the turbulent background of the 13th Century. In "The Lion of Tiberias," two storylinesdiverge and then converge. In one, a gigantic British Dane named John Norwald is sent to the galleys by the warlord Zenghi, there to toil for more than twenty years as a cold, hard core of hate keeps him alive. The other storyline concerns Miles Du Courcey, a Crusader who invades Zenghi's stronghold to rescue his kidnapped sweetheart. "The Shadow of the Vulture" and "Gates of Empire" reveal a lighter side of Howard; yet here too, darkness lurks underneath the light. Although "The Shadow of the Vulture" is best known as the story in which Howard introduced Red Sonya of Rogatino, the prototype for Roy Thomas' Red Sonja of the comics and Sam Raimi's "Xena, Warrior Princess," the male protagonist is Gottfried Von Kalmbach, a dauntless but somewhat oblivious Germanknight.

This isn't just an account of the battles and the politics; it's the story of the destiny of the people of the region: Churchill with his powerful insight tells the the war changed the fates of England, Egypt, and the Arabian peoples in northeast Africa. (Jacketless library hardcover.) About the British attitude toward war: "..there are many people in England, and perhaps elsewhere, who seem to be unable to contemplate military operations for clear political objects, unless they can cajole themselves into the belief that their enemy are utterly and hopelessly vile. To this end the Dervishes, from the Mahdi and the Khalifa downwards, have been loaded with every variety of abuse and charged with all conceivable crimes. This may be very comforting to philanthropic persons at home; but when an army in the field becomes imbued with the idea that the enemy are vermin who cumber the earth, instances of barbarity may easily be the outcome. This unmeasured condemnation is moreover as unjust as it is dangerous and unnecessary... We are told that the British and Egyptian armies entered Omdurman to free the people from the Khalifa's yoke. Never were rescuers more unwelcome."

The Tsunami is a cargo ship. Things get put into her, taken across space, and taken out. There's nothing unusual about that. The crew, now that's another matter. Sure, Captain Indio Tremaine is human, and so is her first mate, the handsome and indestructible gambler Dow Cook. But the rest of the crew are genetic constructs of fur, wings, and claws. Tan, the engineer, is one wily weasel, and that's no metaphor. Together, they are rated "high-risk indy," suited to take on the least likely, most dangerous deliveries. They're the team you want when you have cargo to be delivered and you need things to go right... or when they've already gone wrong. Do things go wrong? This wouldn't be much of a book if everything went smoothly, now would it? FUSION: SPRING ROLLS is a short story collection featuring eight tales of high-flying high adventure and hijinx, told by a team of writers who have written acclaimed novels, TV shows, and checks, and artists who have drawn praise, awards, and salaries.
