"Since the 1990s, Thomas Struth has been one of the most renowned and influential photographers of the German art scene. A brilliant conceptualist with an unerring eye for color, Struth studied painting under Gerhard Richter and photography under Bernd and Hilla Becher, a combination that decisively influenced his vision. This volume collects more than 120 representative photographs from each series in Struth's oeuvre, including: early street photographs from the 1970s and '80s ('Unconscious Places'); the "Family Portraits" series; the "Museum Photographs"; "Nature and Politics"; the jungle photographs ("New Pictures from Paradise"); and, from his latest series, images from the realm of science. Also included are previously unpublished works from the photographer's archive. The largest and most comprehensive survey of the artist's work to date, this superbly illustrated volume includes scholarly essays by curators Thomas Weski and Ulrich Wilmes, as well as photographer Jana-Maria Hartmann. An interview with the artist by Okwui Enwezor, Director of Haus der Kunst, provides valuable insight into Struth's career and ideas."]c--publisher's description, page 2 of jacket.

Through Blossfeldt's lens, plants and flowers become gorgeous formal gesturesKarl Blossfeldt was a pioneer of botanical photography, though his interest in the plant world was initially educational. Fascinated by the structure of plants, whose seemingly artistic forms resulted from biological necessity, he realized that photography could be a useful teaching tool, allowing his students to see and compare natural forms. Working with a homemade camera, Blossfeldt gathered and photographed his own plant samples, magnifying them by up to 45 times. From around 1898 onward, he shot some 6,000 images, which he used primarily as visual aids in his classes. Eventually published as Art Forms in Nature (1928) and Art Forms in Nature, Second Series (1932), Blossfeldt's photographs had a lasting impact on the art of his day and were enthusiastically embraced by both the Surrealist and New Objectivity movements. His books brought him overnight fame and are still considered landmarks in the history of art and photography. Karl Blossfeldt: Masterworks presents a remarkable collection of Blossfeldt's strikingly austere yet poetic portraits of plants, which capture their timeless beauty in intimate detail.

This small volume collects 25 evocative, ghostly, graphite and acrylic works on panel by New York artist Yvonne Puffer. In an interview with art historian Katy Siegel, Puffer cites influences like Ida Applebroog, Peggy Preheim, Alice Neel and Louise Bourgeois. "Bourgeois is probably the most important for me, since she openly talks about her primal family structure's influence, yet the work doesn't need this information to exert its incredible emotional impact. Bourgeois quite often uses everyday objects in her work that evoke a time and place yet always with a discordant note. There's a mystery, haunting and fragile, that makes you a little uncomfortable, but you're not sure why. That's what I like."
