  • af Matthew Allen-Johnson

Flowers of the Fern is a small story that provides the reader with quite personal stories about its characters. It isn't the high adventure story where a ragtag bunch assembles to take down a sorcerer or destroy an evil king. It's more of a detective story wrapped up in fantasy clothing. It is not defined by its scale or its intentions in storytelling. Instead, it provides a different caliber of fantasy story to counteract many of the larger, often overbearing series that come out now. The tale is something thoughtful, engaging, and relatable, and it is something that won't intimidate the reader with its length or its content. About the AuthorMatthew Allen-Johnson was born in Champaign, Illinois. He is a self-proclaimed shut-in who spends most of his time reading and writing. He enjoys science-fiction, fantasy, and the days of yore. Johnson also likes collecting old music from the 1920s through the 1960s. He also loves movies, especially the bad ones. Perhaps because his grandfather was a detective, he has always had an inclination towards crime stories and police procedurals. In a way, this novel is something of a subconscious marriage between his love of Anglo-Saxon history and a few episodes of "Columbo."

He spent part of his youth writing poetry, action adventure, science fiction, even lyrics to songs he would hear in his head until he found his true niche in the horror genre. An amazingly talented artist, Sasha Kouznetsov, also of Newport, was inspired to illustrate each story. Medeiros is also passionate at woodworking, taking much pride in making picture frames for the many illustrations, as well as several baby sized coffins, copper inlay and all, in which he carries his books about. His main inspirations are the great Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. His stories are dark and weird, but remember, without weirdness there is no originality. Katie has a lot going on. She may love her cheating mom and absent dad, she may be disappointed that her friend Mary is too different now to be around, but unexpectedly Katie has made a new friend in Chester, a young man in the States illegally, fleeing a war-torn country, and working off the books for her mother. When Katie is assaulted at a party in the forest, Chester comes to her aid in time for them both to witness the violent demise of her attacker. It was dark out, so they couldn't see what killed him, just the screaming, begging, and thrashing as he was pulled beneath the water's surface. Where do they go from here? People have been vanishing up and down the Au Sable River for months, but who would believe what they saw? Monster of Cooke Dam Pond is far more than a story about a mysterious monster stalking the outdoor-loving residents of a small Michigan town. It's a story about everyday people overcoming hardships in life such as betrayal, addiction, rape, suicide, loss of loved ones, and good versus evil within themselves. Hardships come and go, but it's how you handle them that really makes the difference.Ever since Bradley A. Cossins was a toddler, his parents took him camping throughout many areas in Michigan. He doesn't believe there has been a year in his life that he has not stepped into a national forest for a weekend. Having worked for outdoor/sporting goods retailers for more than seven consecutive years, Cossins has come to not only cherish the outdoors as a staple of his life, but a means of regaining our childhood and to never forget where we all came from. During the time he wrote this book, he has been a student at the University of Michigan, Dearborn, focusing on environmental studies so he can one day give back to our natural world! This book was inspired by Peter Benchley's Jaws and Johnathan Rand's book series, Michigan Chillers, as well as nerdy games and interests throughout his childhood like Magic: The Gathering, "The Gitrog Monster," and his life's accumulation of camping along the Au Sable River.

About the BookThere is a point in everyone's life, a moment that changes your trajectory. A disruption to your linear path: inertia. What happened to me was just that, but that's not what is paramount, because somehow I found my way back. I think, How do you know who you are? How do you know if you're being authentic? What small infractions caused so much chaos that it brought you to you?If authenticity is the main contract, how do you sign it? How do you surrender to it? You don't. You surrender to more than you. You sign a contract within your soul that is connected to more than just your brain. In reality, you can't sign this contract because it was signed long before you even knew your brain, body, or consciousness. As Plato called them "forms", spiritualists call it a soul.In this novel, all of the concerns I have progressed through, and are still living with, are addressed. As this work is a work in progress, as am I, it will be distributed in volumes.About the AuthorCandace Atkinson has always had a passion for learning and a love for God, but her views were always unorthodox. Though baptized Christian and later raised Mormon, she never submitted to all the views that religious validation required, but still felt a deep connection to a higher power. After going through the traumas depicted in this fictional novel, she had a profound spiritual awakening at the age of 23 after six months of meditating, and having never inquired into mysticism or Hinduism, she found a new way of thinking, living and being. It is her hope that through the description of her trials, maybe just one person can amble through their own a little more graciously than she may have.
