The book is targeted at professional scholars as well as language students who plan their own research in the fuzzy field of applied linguistics, while working on their degree papers, or doing an any academic work related to language study. The uniqueness of the volume consists in its methodological character which is made operational and thus the book may function as a methodological manual. The academically fashionable and catchy word 'interdisciplinarity' is frequently made void in the research perspective. Comprehended as a mark of academic liberalism, standing for anything goes, it is questioned by orthodox minds adhering to the compartmentalization of scientific disciplines. This volume tries to bridge the gap in at least three ways. It offers theoretical justification for crossing disciplinary borders in methodological terms, presents an application of adopted methods or techniques from a different discipline and finally considers research benefits resulting from such an approach. These three elements, around which each chapter is organized, account for the integrationist aspect of interdisciplinarity. The volume includes seven chapters dedicated to a selected methodology incorporating an empirical avenue coming from outside of the linguistic domain, yet it is applied to linguistic issues which are interdisciplinary in their character. They either occupy a contested space between disciplines, or need an interdisciplinary insight, which ultimately imparts a more comprehensive understanding.
"This book provides important contributions to understanding the teaching of awareness or mindfulness in Buddhism and in related traditions, examined in original ways in a collection of articles that approach this theme from different perspectives: philosophical, philological, exegetic, anthropological, as an aspect of meditative practice, and so on. The volume is dedicated to Corrado Pensa, a well-known Buddhist scholar and practitioner. A valuable feature of this book is the integration of two aspects of the Buddhist tradition, i.e., theory and practice, the volume thereby appealing to both academics and practitioners"--

Reading to Learn, Reading the World showcases a range of Reading to Learn (R2L) projects from around the world in a variety of educational settings in many different languages. This pedagogy emerged over two decades from a coalescence of idealism, academic research and teachers' experience. One ideal shared by everyone involved in R2L has been to become a more effective teacher, and to help others do so. Underlying this drive to excel is the democratic ideal that education should be equally available, inclusive and effective for every student. In the first chapter David Rose recounts the origins of R2L in work with Indigenous Australian children, informed by genre writing and scaffolded reading pedagogies. Three following chapters celebrate the impact of the methodology in settings of educational disadvantage in Australian schools.Further chapters describe the efficacy of the methodology around the world in a variety of languages, often in very challenging educational settings. Stories from Africa detail the successes of R2L pedagogy in South Africa, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. In Europe, a ground-breaking project to adapt the methodology for the education of deaf and hearing-impaired students working in Swedish Sign Language is described. Also in Sweden, a long-term project to train teachers working in disadvantaged schools grew out of the success of the EU-funded project, Teacher Learning for European Literacy Education (TeL4ELE). Following chapters describe how the TeL4ELE project unfolded and spread R2L to Portuguese and Spanish schools and teacher education.Chapters from the Americas provide stories of success from a US community education project with Spanish-speaking mothers learning English, a tertiary setting in Colombia where the methodology has been used as a cross-faculty initiative, and a literacy outreach program from a university in Argentina for teachers from disadvantaged local schools. The final chapters include an evaluation of the R2L methodology in comparison with other literacy methods used in Argentina, an analysis of the R2L methodology for teaching mathematics in Chile, and a project to teach scientific literacy with Indonesian school students, in Indonesian and English.

explores the relationship between The Beatles and their times, situating them in the changing class, gender and ethnic dynamics of postwar Britain, and considers them as Liverpudlians, Orientalists, and creative pioneers.
"This book engages - conceptually and empirically - with the ongoing debate concerning the 'influence' occasioned by the participation of an interpreter - whether professionally trained or as a lay family member - in healthcare delivery. Healthcare delivery, especially in the primary care sector, is increasingly becoming multicultural and multilingual in character. This global reality manifests itself as a communicative challenge in interpreter-mediated healthcare consultations, involving professional as well as family members in the role of interpreters. In the context of this book (previously published as a special issue of Communication & Medicine), interpreter-mediated healthcare consultations are seen simultaneously as multilingual and multiparty interactions, as well as being dyadic and triadic communication"--
Adopts an integrative approach to investigate the role of monumental architecture in shaping social dynamics and power relations on the island of Cyprus during the Late Bronze Age (LBA; c.1700-1050 BCE).
As an innovative and constantly inventive jazz pianist, Brad Mehldau has attracted a sizable following over the years, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience from his performances. With Formation, Brad seeks to extend that experience to the page, by sharing some of the deeply personal elements of his life, and how these came together for him to become the musician and person that he is today. He offers an in-depth look at how he came to understand his adoption, being sexually groomed in high school, and overcoming heroin addiction in his twenties. The book creates a vibrantly written portrait of the jazz world in New York in the late 1980s and early 1990s, showing how a generation of musicians met and sparked off one another to take the music in new directions, drawing on a wealth of influences but also keeping sight of tradition, including those rooted in both the jazz and classical worlds. The atmosphere of the clubs, the creative scene in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and Brad's early experiences of touring are brilliantly brought to life. The formation of the MoodSwing quartet with Joshua Redman is described, as is the growth of Brad's own groups, leading to his acclaimed Art of the Trio series of recordings with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy. Also covered is the trio's later life with Jeff Ballard joining in place of Rossy, along with Brad's solo ventures and his explorations of other areas of music.Brad's period of addiction - both his painful decline and ultimate redemption - makes for compelling and often distressing reading. Yet, throughout the book, his own reading and listening are a constant frame of reference and often inspiration, from the works of James Joyce and Thomas Mann to the sounds of prog rock and Bob Dylan, not to mention critics such as Harold Bloom and Terry Eagleton. The book can be read as a Bildungsroman, but this coming-of-age is no novel: it is vividly lived personal experience.Intimate, vulnerable, and profound, Formation is a rare look inside the mind of an artist at the top of his field, in his own words.
