PrefaceIt has become an article of faith that Confucianism is synonymous with communitarianism. Few people are aware, however, that this strong characterization, evident as it appears on the surface, was in part, an image that was imposed on Chinese society by such Western scholars as Max Weber to distinguish it from Western society. While the intention seems to have been an attempt to uphold the superiority of the West over the East, i.e., individualism over communitarianism, in recent years, scholars such as Harvard's Michael Sandel, see the supposed communitarianism of Confucian society as being more positive than the individualism of the West, where each person stands alone. This book examines Confucian society in great detail and reveals that while indeed there were features of communitarianism in Confucian society, there was also the tendency towards individual agency in the choices people made towards their life's work, their autonomy to develop their talents either as scholars or artists, and their willingness to undergo the privations of solitude and perpetual study, not necessarily for personal gain but to make themselves useful stewards of the truth. In addition, Confucian scholars were not just pliable bookworms; they could use their gifts and the fruits of their self-cultivation in service of their society.

The late Dr. Rudolf Flesch, an Austrian lawyer who earned a doctorate degree at Columbia University, and became a consultant to the United States government on how to write clear, snappy English, lamented all through his life why so many people could not read. He wrote, "The teaching of reading -- all over the United States, in all the schools, in all the textbooks -- is totally wrong and flies in the face of all logic and common sense." To Dr. Flesch, the problem was clear. The look and guess method that many teachers had latched on to was creating a treadmill of children who were ending up as barely literate adults. The author of Johnny Still Can't Read - But You Can Teach Him at Home, writes: "I have seen enough excellent teachers of phonics systems in action to be in awe of them. They teach class after class in which no child reads below grade level, and the classes average two or three years above grade level. They have never seen a "dyslexic" child, nor produced a "learning disabled" or non-reader....The one thing the sight-word advocates have never been able to prove is that children don7t learn to read with intensive phonics. They can't prove it, because the evidence is overwhelmign that children can and do learn to read when properly taught with a good phonics system." Use Read Assure: Guaranteed Formula for Reading Success with Phonics and you will readily concur with this conclusion.
Introduction to 3,570 Real-world English Phrases for Speaking and Writing Practice : Volume 1 Many English learners understand the importance of building their vocabulary, but simplymemorizing words is, quite often, not enough. Memorized words are soon forgotten fromlack of use. Learners who make it a habit of reading English books, however, are able toretain some of the words they learn as they come across some of the same words, again andagain.Even so, it is shortsighted to focus only on individual words. After all, words come inbundles, or collocations. Already, I have used the expression "come across." If you becomefamiliar with words that usually go together, you can sometimes predict what a speaker isgoing to say. This gives you tremendous advantage when you are taking an English test.A collocation, by the way, is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as "a word or phrase thatis often used with another word or phrase, in a way that sounds correct to people who havespoken the language all their lives...." While you should continue to build your vocabularythrough extensive reading, you can give yourself additional practice in English speaking andwriting by also paying attention to word clusters such as the ones offered in this book. These phrases have been collected through hundreds of hours of listening to radio shows, television broadcasts, podcasts, university lectures and interviews. Phrases have also beenculled from newspaper and magazine articles, as well as contemporary books of both fictionand nonfiction. Here's wishing you all the best in your continued efforts to become a moreproficient user of the English language.
