A beautiful clothbound volume situating Rembrandt among the Dutch Golden Age's most celebrated portraitistsHaving inspired fervent study for centuries, Rembrandt and his Dutch Golden Age contemporaries are admired especially for their portraiture, with Rembrandt in particular having captured a liveliness in his subjects that continues to inspire artists today. In the 17th century, there was a significant market demand for portraits among Amsterdam's upper class; like Rembrandt, painters such as Thomas de Keyser (c. 1596-1667), Frans Hals (c. 1582-1666) and later Bartholomeus van der Helst (1613-70) relied on these commissions for a critical portion of their income and thus created a wealth of paintings depicting various sitters. Helmed by Amsterdam Museum curator Norbert Middelkoop, this 2020 Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza exhibit presents 20 painted portraits and 20 engravings by Rembrandt and some 60 pieces by his contemporaries in a comprehensive survey that reveals the everlasting quality of these works. This clothbound volume accompanies the exhibit and includes color reproductions of key pieces as well as research into the stories behind the paintings' subjects: married couples, craftsmen at work, children, scholars, businessmen, the artists themselves and important group portraits.Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rjin (1606-69), better known by the mononym Rembrandt, was a draftsman, printmaker, art collector and painter whose tremendous output of work helped define the Dutch Golden Age. Although he died in near poverty, Rembrandt is now widely understood as one of the greatest and most-studied artists in the Western canon.

An elegant clothbound volume celebrating the master fashion designer Balenciaga's affinity for Spanish paintingThis book surveys the significant influence that the painters of the so-called Spanish School had on the creative process of Cristóbal Balenciaga, the great master couturier of the 20th century. Balenciaga was born in the Spanish coastal town of Getaria in 1895 and was the son of a seamstress. His mother made clothing for prominent families including the Marquis and Marquise of Casa Torres who spent their summers in Getaria. It was at their mansion that the young designer first admired the garments by the best London tailors and the most reputed Parisian couturiers, and where he was able to enjoy the magnificent art collection owned by the couple. Balenciaga was known for his ability to take historical garments and render them in a highly modern way, with the use of clean lines and pure forms that earned him the epithet of "the architect of fashion. Throughout his career, Balenciaga took delight in the colors, volumes and forms of the fabrics depicted in the paintings of Velázquez, El Greco, Zurbarán, Goya, Raimundo de Madrazo and Zuloaga, among others. References to Spanish culture were present in his work and continued to be seen even in his most groundbreaking period. Balenciaga and Spanish Painting features a selection of paintings and valuable items of clothing from the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza and other national museums, as well as private collections. Though it would seem impossible to replicate El Greco's gleaming fabrics in real life, Balenciaga manages to do just that." -Hyperallergic

Pop Art Myths revisits Pop from a twenty-first-century perspective, bringing together more than 100 works by artists including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake, Robert Rauschenberg, Tom Wesselmann, Alex Katz, Mimmo Rotella, Eduardo Arroyo, Vija Celmins, Öyvind Fahlström and Gerhard Richter. The exhibition and catalogue attempt to survey Pop art through the revelation and deconstruction of the myths the artists constructed around themselves and the movement, about its apparent superficiality, and its implied irony and critique (or lack thereof). Also included are texts by art historians Francisco Calvo Serraller and Thomas Crow.

The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum has always shown interest in the world of gastronomy. On the one hand, it offers visitors a gastronomic tour of our collection. On the other hand, it has developed the DelicaThyssen line for the shop, in which they include local food products of excellent quality. With all these precedents the idea arose to produce a publication, Dishing Up the Thyssen, of a gastronomic nature, a recipe book made up of 25 dishes by renowned Spanish chefs, a dialogue between art and gastronomy, a journey through taste, understood as meaning and as aesthetics. The selected chefs have visited the rooms of the Museum looking for inspiration in a painting from its extensive art collection. Each one of them has chosen a work and made a recipe, not so much as a literal translation of the work to the plate, but as an inspiration that could appear through the theme of the chosen work, the texture of the material used by the artist, the colours...Each cook explains, in a brief text, why he has chosen that work and which elements of the painting have led him to create the recipe. Then there is the preparation of the recipe with the list of ingredients, finish and presentation.

Published to accompany the exhibition at the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, this catalogue analyzes the presence of fashion in the work of Joaquín Sorolla. The Sorolla and Fashion Exhibition, organized in collaboration between the Museo Sorolla and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, focuses on the influence of fashion in the work of Joaquín Sorolla. Curated by Eloy Martínez de la Pera, it presents paintings loaned from museums and private collections in Spain and abroad, together with a selection of clothing and accessories of the period. Extremely interested in fashion, Sorolla was the perfect chronicler of the trends and style changes that took place in clothing throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His works offer an evocative catalogue of dresses, jewels and accessories, all emphasized by his loose, dynamic brushstroke. The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue places particular emphasis on the magnificent female portraits that the artist executed between 1890 and 1920.
