  • af Adam Newell
    458,95 kr.

Exploding off the page with over 1,000 of the best examples of exploitation, grindhouse, and pulp film poster design comes The Art of the B-Movie Poster, a collection of incredible posters from low-budget films from the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. Once relegated to the underground and midnight movie circuit, these films and their bombastic advertisements are experiencing a surge of mainstream popularity driven by fans appreciative of the artistic skill, distinctive aesthetic, and unabashed sensationalism they relied on to make a profit, with the quality of the poster often far surpassing that of the film itself. The book celebrates this tradition with sections divided into "moral panic" films, action, horror, sci-fi, and of course, sex, each introduced with short essays by genre experts such as Kim Newman, Eric Schaffer, Simon Sheridan, Vern, and author Stephen Jones, winner of the Horror Writer's Association 2015 Bram Stoker Award for Non-Fiction. Edited by Adam Newell and featuring an introduction by author and filmmaker Pete Tombs, The Art of the B-Movie Poster is a loving tribute to the artwork and artists that brought biker gangs, jungle girls, James Bond rip-offs and reefer heads to life for audiences around the world.

  • af Alex Gross
    408,95 kr.

The densely packed paintings found in Alex Gross' latest monograph Prison of the Mind extend the ideas he'd developed in the prior decade while turning the pop culture references up to eleven. Fresh themes and settings find his flawless oil paintings skating to the outer limits of the absurd. Finely rendered Darth Skater at the skate park and Cersei and Jaime Lannister, the villains from "Game of Thrones," sharing Tic-Tacs simultaneously amaze and amuse. Mr. Gross has been kept busy creating his stream-of-consciousness fine oil paintings for the past decade, but also continues to create his modified "cabinet card" paintings. An entire new body of work created on these archival photographs is also featured in Prison of the Mind. A revealing interview with writer and curator John Seed lets the reader into the inner-workings of this fascinating artist's mind.

Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of the few artists who have achieved mythic status. His work is instantly recognizable; like Picasso, Warhol or Frida Kahlo, his look is imprinted on our psyche. But how much do we really know Basquiat? Who was he, where did he come from, where did he hang out? Desperately Seeking Basquiat lets readers explore the most significant locations of his life. We learn that he wasn't from the ghetto, but from the respectable, professional middle class Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn. He spent time in his mother's native Puerto Rico as a child. He went to a private school for a few years. And then, yes, he ran away from home and lived with the junkies sleeping rough in Washington Square Park. On the way there are the amazing cast of characters and lovers that came in and out of Basquiat's life - not just Warhol, but Debby Harry, Madonna, William Burroughs, Versace, Francesco Clemente and Keith Haring. And in the midst of all this the art dealers, impressarios and galleries that knew how to take Basquiat's talent and turn it fast into millions of dollars. We discover some unexpected places: Basquiat spent time in Modena, Italy, and a lot of time in Zurich and loved detox trips to the Far East and Hawaii; this is far from just a New York story. Later on he travelled to Abidjan in Cote d'Ivoire, in search of a new direction. Full of fascinating locations and scene photos from the heady late '70s and '80s NYC, and as with the other titles in the series, Desperately Seeking Basquiat also features great maps, short punchy texts and insightful quotes from Basquiat's contemporaries. For anyone into Basquiat, this delicious volume, with its cute format, really packs a punch. For anyone wanting to know more, much more, about the man behind some of the coolest, most iconic art of the 20th Century, it's indispensable.

  • - Egyptian Saint's Day Festivals
    af J W McPherson
    598,95 kr.

A fascinating and highly original contribution to the study of Egypt's religious folklore. First published in Cairo during World War II, The Moulids of Egypt is a study of moulids, the popular Egyptian religious festivals celebrated by both Muslims and Christians in the first half of the twentieth century. The book talks in detail about the secular side of moulids, where sports, games, theatres, dancing, and laughter were as much part of the festivals as the religious processions and the whirling of dervishes. Some of the rites and customs analyzed here date from as far back as the Pharaonic period, but the moulids are gradually dying out; many of the 126 festivals described in Moulids of Egypt have since faded away, making the book of lasting interest.

  • af Yves Gastou
    568,95 kr.

Over one thousand rings from Yves Gastou's personal collection are beautifully displayed and photographed in this sumptuous book. Gastou deals in 20th century decorative arts from his Parisian gallery, but perhaps his most passionate undertaking is in building his collection of Men's rings. His collection is as diverse as it is large; from ancient Egyptian examples to gothic masterpieces, and religious examples to memento mori, bikers' rings to an entire chapter devoted to curiosities, Gastou has built an all-encompassing treasury. In silver or gold, set with jewels or skulls, sober or extravagant, ritual or rebellious, these pieces bear the imprint of a taste, that of the insatiable gallerist freely appropriating the different periods, it seems unlikely that another assemblage will ever rival Yves Gastou's fabulous collection.

Desperately Seeking Van Gogh adopts a very refreshing new way of looking at the life of this most brilliant of artists: by following in his footsteps around all the locations which meant the most to him and which most influenced his work. We capture the mood of bourgeois respectability of his mother's family in The Hague, the fields and dyke banks of the sleepy provincial town of Zundert on the Dutch/Belgian border where he grew up, to the boarding schools which he hated. We go with Vincent to The Hague where he was an apprentice art dealer, to his time in England and his dreams of maybe escaping to South America, Brussels, Antwerp, Paris and then to all the detailed locations in Provence, and many more. Every spread features great imagery - both photographic and of Vincent's works - and a fascinating commentary. For any enthusiast or art history student of Vincent, this title is a must. For anyone new to his work, it is a very accessible, friendly and insightful way to look at his life.

  • af Ian Reid
    423,95 kr.

Photographer and documentarian Ian Reid was born and raised in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. In 2018 he set out to photograph 23 public housing developments in Brooklyn from above. His goal was to preserve the architecture and to present the structures without any preconceived notions of what goes on within. The images are framed by the streets they are defined by, often showing how they look with the changing seasons. Gentrification and development have changed the surroundings of the public housing, but the buildings and its residents for the most part stay the same. Complex Geometry respects the true residents of Brooklyn and pays homage to where Reid grew up and still spends a great deal of his time.
