In this 3 series of Unspoken Sermons, George MacDonald states his theological views and among other things. The work itself is a Christian classic spoken of highly by C.S. Lewis. In his introduction to George MacDonald: An Anthology, C. S. Lewis wrote of MacDonald's theology: "This collection, as I have said, was designed not to revive MacDonald's literary reputation but to spread his religious teaching. Hence most of my extracts are taken from the three volumes of "Unspoken Sermons." My own debt to this book is almost as great as one man can owe to another: and nearly all serious inquirers to whom I have introduced it acknowledge that it has given them great help-sometimes indispensable help toward the very acceptance of the Christian faith." Never one to shy away from a difficulty, MacDonald explores some of the most challenging and perplexing passages in the Gospels, each time rising to newer heights in his elucidation of the mysteries of Gods Love.

The Jefferson Bible, was formerly titled The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth. The work is based upon Thomas Jefferson's belief that the ethical system of Jesus was the finest the world had ever seen and sought to separate those ethical teachings from the supernatural by eliminating sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been intermixed in the account provided by the four Gospels. Jefferson presents these teachings, along with the essential events of the life of Jesus, in one continuous narrative.

An epic poem written in Latin as De rerum natura by Lucretius which explores the materialist philosophy of the Greek philosopher Epicurus. Lucretius divided his argument into six books. Books I and II establish the main principles of the atomic universe. Book III demonstrates the atomic structure and mortality of the soul and ends with a triumphant sermon on the theme "Death is nothing to us." Book IV describes the mechanics of sense perception, thought, and certain bodily functions and condemns sexual passion. Book V describes the creation and working of the world and the celestial bodies and the evolution of life and human society. Book VI explains remarkable phenomena of the earth and sky, in particular, thunder and lightning. Using poetic language and metaphor, the Lucretius describes a world ruled by physical principles, rather than the divine will. Called the "the most complete analysis of the atomic composition of matter prior to twentieth-century nuclear physics."

This book is the original autobiographical work by Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company. In this book, Ford details how he got into business, the strategies that he used to become a wealthy and successful businessman, and what others can do by learning from the examples he has outlined. Ford takes you through a journey of history, business and lessons to be learned from which he used to develop his financial empire.

Sir Thomas More's engaging description of Utopia, an island supporting a perfectly organized and happy people, was a best-seller when it first appeared in Latin in 1516. The book is a frame narrative primarily depicting a fictional island society and its religious, social and political customs. Locating his island in the (then) New World, More endowed it with a language and poetry, and detailed the length of the working day and even the divorce laws. Such precision gives a disturbing and exciting impact to Utopia, which still remains a book of the future. Despite modern connotations of the word "utopia," it is widely accepted that the society More describes in this work was not actually his own "perfect society." Rather he wished to use the contrast between the imaginary land's unusual political ideas and the chaotic politics of his own day as a platform from which to discuss social issues in Europe.

An unfinished novella that Mark Twain worked on periodically from roughly 1890 until his death in 1910. The body of the work is a serious social commentary addressing Twain's ideas of the Moral Sense and the ''damned human race.'' Published posthumously in 1916 by Twain's biographer Albert Bigelow Paine.

There are numerous time-honored stories which have become so incorporated into the literature and thought of our race that a knowledge of them is an indispensable part of one's education. As a matter of course, some of these stories are better known, and therefore more famous, than others. Some have a slight historical value; some are useful as giving point to certain great moral truths; others are products solely of the fancy, and are intended only to amuse. Some are derived from very ancient sources, and are current in the literature of many lands; some have come to us through the ballads and folk tales of the English people; a few are of quite recent origin; nearly all are the subjects of frequent allusions in poetry and prose and in the conversation of educated people. Care has been taken to exclude everything that is not strictly within the limits of probability; hence there is here no trespassing upon the domain of the fairy tale, the fable, or the myth.

Best known for his poetry, William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was also a dedicated exponent of Irish folklore. Yeats took a particular interest in the tales' mythic and magical roots. The Celtic Twilight ventures into the eerie and puckish world of fairies, ghosts, and spirits. "This handful of dreams, "as the author referred to it, first appeared in 1893, and its title refers to the predawn hours, when the Druids performed their rituals. It Consists of stories recounted to the poet by his friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. Yeats' faithful transcription of their narratives includes his own visionary experiences, appended to the storytellers' words as a form of commentary.

Perhaps most well-known for his fairy-tales and fantasy stories or for his poetry, George MacDonald was a great spiritual master of the nineteenth century. He spent several years as a minister in his native Scotland; however he was forced to resign his position due to ill health. He had a profound influence on such later writers as G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis. In The Hope of the Gospel, with his ever cleverly style, MacDonald explores the essential heart of the gospel that is so often overlooked, both in his day and ours. Dissatisfied with cheap and hasty interpretations of Scripture, MacDonald invites us beneath the surface in a heartfelt meditation on all that Christ came to accomplish.

The Iliad is a powerful, beautiful, and awe-inspiring work of ancient Greece. The work is an epic poem in dactylic hexameters; it combines the horridness and sometimes mundaneness of war into an epic poem filled with art, illustrious descriptions, and a myriad of wonderful literary images. Set in the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of Ilium by a coalition of Greek states, it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. Although the story covers only a few weeks in the final year of the war, the Iliad mentions or alludes to many of the Greek legends about the siege.

Travels in Alaska lets the reader take a trip to last century's Alaska through Muir's clean, easy-going, enthusiastic prose. He wrote the way he took pictures, with insight, attention, care and genuine feeling. The work a lovely look into a beautiful land and its inhabitants the way it used to be, told in a flowing narrative that is far less rushed than contemporary travel tales.

A deceptively simple story and the shortest of Dumas's most famous novels, The Black Tulip (1850) weaves historical events surrounding a brutal murder into a tale of romantic love. Set in Holland in 1672, this timeless political allegory draws on the violence and crimes of history, making a case against tyranny and creating a symbol of justice and tolerance: the fateful tulipa negra.

A Princess of Mars is a science fantasy novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first of his Barsoom series. This story is set on Mars, on a dying planet with a unforgiving desert environment. Carter An Earthman from Virginia finds himself on Mars after being mysteriously transported there while hiding in a cave on Earth. He soon finds that he has great strength and superhuman agility in this new environment as it has less gravity. On the planet Mars, he finds himself battling for a beautiful woman with the help of some strange creatures.

The Writings of Austin Osman Spare is a collection of three books written by the famous artist and occult author. Black Hawk was born at Sac village, on Rock river, in the year 1767, a leader and warrior of the Sauk American Indian tribe. His status came from leading war parties as a young man, and from his leadership of a band of Sauks during the Black Hawk War of 1832. This is his Autobiography.

Letters from the Earth is one of Mark Twain's posthumously published works. The essays were written during a difficult time in Twain's life; he was deep in debt and had lost his wife and one of his daughters. The book consists of a series of short stories, many of which deal with God and Christianity. Twain penned a series of letters from the point-of-view of a dejected angel on Earth. This title story consists of letters written by the archangel Satan to archangels, Gabriel and Michael, about his observations on the curious proceedings of earthly life and the nature of man's religions. By analyzing the idea of heaven and God that is widely accepted by those who believe in both, Twain is able to take the silliness that is present and study it with the common sense that is absent. Not so much an attack as much as a cold dissection. Other short stories in the book include a bedtime story about a family of cats Twain wrote for his daughters, and an essay explaining why an anaconda is morally superior to Man. Twain's writings in Letters From the Earth find him at perhaps his most quizzical and questioning state ever.

A Doll's House made Henrik Ibsen world famous; the play is still Ibsen's most popular and one of his most acclaimed. Frequently called the first feminist play, A Doll's House is a fierce critique of Victorian society's conduct toward women. The play revolves around the lives of Nora and Torvald Helmer. Nora is treated as a juvenile, foolish woman by her husband. In reality Nora has been secretly working odd jobs to pay back the money she borrowed when Torvald was ill. This selfless act saved Torvald's life. Nora borrowed the money from her father's bank by a forged signature and has been plagued with the fear of Torvald discovering her secret. When Torvald discovers the existence of the loan he berates Nora, calling her a deceitful and corrupt woman and telling her she is unfit to raise their children. He says that he will stay married only to maintain appearances. Nora realizing that Torvald's love has always been conditional on her maintaining a traditional role as wife and mother decides that she must leave to find out who she is and what to make of her life.

The legendary Irish revolutionary Michael Collins was known to be an avid reader during his brief career he set up a few underground newspapers. Collins also found time to write essays, which are collected in this work. In his essays, Collins distills his political thoughts and offers his unique insights into Ireland's troubled history.

Sutton Elbert Griggs (June 19, 1872 - January 2, 1933) is best known for his novel Imperium in Imperio, a utopian work that imagines that within the United States there is a separate African American state. This work centers on the disclosure of an African American "empire within an empire," a shadow government complete with a Congress based in Waco, Texas. The two main characters are childhood friends separated by wealth, education, skin tone, and political outlook; one is a militant and one an integrationist. The light-skinned and more militant Bernard Belgrave has been hand-picked to serve as president and advocates a takeover of the Texas state government, while the dark-skinned, college-educated Belton Piedmont argues for assimilation and cooperation. Bernard has Belton executed as a traitor, leaving the potentially violent and unstable Bernard in control of the Imperium as the novel ends.

Love and Freindship [sic] is a juvenile story by Jane Austen, dated 1790. From the age of eleven until she was eighteen, Jane Austen wrote her tales in three notebooks. The notebooks still exist - one in the Bodleian Library; the other two in the British Museum. Written in epistolary form Love and Freindship is thought to be one of the tales she wrote for the amusement of her family. The installments, written as letters from the heroine Laura, to Marianne, the daughter of her friend, Isabel, "La Comtesse de Feuillide", may have come about as nightly readings by the young Jane in the Austen home. Love and Freindship is clearly a parody of romantic novels Austen read as a child. In form, it resembles a fairy tale as much as anything else, featuring wild coincidences and turns of fortune, but Austen is determined to lampoon the conventions of romantic stories, right down to the utter failure of romantic fainting spells, which always turn out badly for the female characters. In this story one can see the development of Austen's sharp wit and disdain for romantic sensibility, so characteristic of her later novels.

This blanded-down version of the Cinderella tale is based upon what is generally-agreed upon as the definitive "first" Cinderella, which is by a French author named Charles Perrault, printed in 1697. What is added here is a bunch of "lessons" which children should learn by the story. For example, when Cinderella is late leaving the ball, thus necessitating her walking home in rags, the author tells his readers: "[This] is an everlasting lesson to all the pretty little Cinderella's in the world to keep their word, and to act in good faith by such as befriend them."

George MacDonald (1824-1905) was born in Aberdeen shire, Scotland. Briefly a clergyman, then a professor of English literature at Bedford and King's College in London, he was a popular lecturer and published poetry, stories, novels, and fairy tales. Despite being born into slavery, Greco-Roman philosopher Epictetus became one of the most influential thinkers of his time. The Discourses of Epictetus are a series of extracts of the teachings of the Stoic philosopher Epictetus. No writings of Epictetus himself are known. His discourses were transcribed and compiled by his pupil Arrian c. 108 AD. The main work is The Discourses. There were originally eight books, but only four now remain in their entirety, along with a few fragments of the others. Epictetus maintains that the foundation of all philosophy is self-knowledge, that is, the conviction of our ignorance and weakness when measured by the standard of good, and ought to be the first subject of instruction.

George MacDonald's Diary of an Old Soul represents a yearlong poetic conversation with God. This book presents details of Masonic initiation rituals, along with grips, passwords and regalia. Written in the 19th century, Duncan's Ritual, as it is known, has been republished numerous times. It includes the three basic degrees of the Ancient York Rite, and four additional advanced degrees. There are over a hundred illustrations; all reproduced here, which show important details of the rituals, including gestures and symbolic pictures. Duncan's Ritual is careful to note known variations where they exist. This book will be of interest to beginning Masons who want a roadmap of the craft, as well as experienced Masons who need a review.

Orthodoxy is a book by G. K. Chesterton that has become a classic of Christian apologetics. Chesterton considered this book a companion to his other work, Heretics. In the book's preface Chesterton states the purpose is to "attempt an explanation, not of whether the Christian faith can be believed, but of how he personally has come to believe it." The book is developed as an intellectual quest by a spiritually curious person. While looking for the meaning of life he finds truth that uniquely fulfills human needs. This is the truth revealed in Christianity. Chesterton likens this discovery to a man setting off from the south coast of England, journeying for many days, only to arrive at Brighton, the point he originally left from. Such a man, he proposes, would see the wondrous place he grew up in with newly appreciative eyes.
