Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Bielefeld University (Linguistik und Literaturwissenschaft), course: A Survey of British Literature, language: English, abstract: The South African J.M. Coetzee's novel Foe, written in 1986, serves as an example of how established narrative conventions can be altered and twisted by adopting elements from different narrative approaches, which are combined into an interesting, unique and well-rounded novel. In this term paper I would like to analyse the unconventional way in which the many stories of Coetzee's Foe are told. I will begin by closely examining the narrative situation, which - although it might appear so during the first reading - does not stay constant throughout the novel's discourse. In the second part of my analysis, I will concentrate on the level of the characters and the story, in which both a variety of stories are told as well as the perspectives are alternated perpetually. Finally, I will have a look at what I would call one of the novel's major storylines - the story about story telling itself. This 'meta-storytelling' (or 'meta-narration') is what binds all elements of Foe together to one cohesive piece of literature.
Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2,0, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), course: CSFP-Northern and Eastern Dimensions of the EU, language: English, abstract: Belarus became a dictatorship shortly after the young democracy there failed. Among different reasons of it not to be underestimated is the economic crisis that time and the lack of the national consciousness of Belarusians. Both made it easier to introduce violence, force order and stability mainly due to the fact that democracy was associated first of all with anarchy and empty shelves in shops. The intense relationship with Russia, mainly due to economic dependence and the Soviet tradition, caused an exclusion Belarus¿ in Europe and also a self-exclusion of theBelarusians. After several years of minimal contacts between Belarus and the West, there has been an increased interest in the region to be observed. The lesson from the past has shown that isolation and political/economic pressure do not work in case of Belarus, so that the ¿Serbia scenariö cannot be repeated. The main reasons for an increased interest in Belarus are the Easternenlargement of the European Union and the importance of resources, mainly gas and oil, flowing through the Republic from Russia. Next to the realistic approach that includes also the borderzone pragmatism, there are also idealistic reasons to be taken under consideration. The aspirations of the new member states in Central Europe and the believe of the EU that a stabile, accountable neighborhood can be assured only through building democracy in the country made up the decision of the EU to intensify the democratization processes in Belarus.
Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 3,0, RWTH Aachen University, language: English, abstract: Alzheimer's Disease (henceforth ¿A.D.¿) is generally diagnosed in people over the age of 65. So when the world populations becomes older and more persons over the age of 65 populate the world, the disease spreads. By 2006, the number of A.D.-patients had already increased to 26.6 millions. This number is assumed to quadruple by 2050.But an improved A.D.-research would not only help those persons who suffer from it: ¿Alzheimer's Disease offers the challenge not only of delineating the writing disturbance of a common neurodegenerative illness but also the opportunity to discern how widespread neocortical deafferentation affects the neurobehavioral underpinnings of a complex cognitive task such as writing.¿ (Glossar et al., 2000:78)Why especially the examination of language in A.D.-patients can promote the general study of language a great deal is also pointed out by Obler et al. (1999:92): ¿The language of dementing patients presents a unique opportunity for examining the relationship between language and cognition. The pattern of dissociation of abilities in dementia can yield information regarding the normal relationship ¿ dependence or independence ¿ between language and more general cognitive abilities. [¿] To study language production and comprehension abilities in dementing patients is to explore the boundaries between syntax and semantics and among semantics, real world knowledge, and reasoning abilites.¿In this termpaper I will show that A.D. has severe effects on the patients¿ language and that it is primarily caused by an impaired memory. During the second chapter, I will give a brief overview of the disease in general, i.e. the history of A.D., the insights and damages of A.D.-patients¿ brain and body, and the different stages of this disease. Chapter 3 will present a selection of the most common effects of A.D. on language. The fourth chapter will close with a short summary of the termpaper and a conclusion.
Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - General and Theories of International Politics, grade: 16, University of Aberdeen, language: English, abstract: The democratic peace theory has been widely discussed by scholars of international relations and whereas on the one hand it is acclaimed as the ¿closest thing we have to a law in international politics¿, it is rejected as not being true by the other side. Whether the democratic peace theory is a useful guidance for policy-makers or not is the conflict of different theories in international relations, namely liberalism and realism. This paper wants to clarify the disparity of liberalism and realism in the aspect of the democratic peace theory and therefore it will start with the idealist perspective, followed by the view of the opponents of the theory and then ending with a conclusion on the merits of democratic peace theory. In the regard of the democratic peace theory it is difficult to find any reliable and meaningful statistical date because this is a field of research that demands various definitions which vary from author to author. They set up different meanings for the terms 'democracy' and 'war' respectively 'conflict'. However, specific ideas of those terms are essential as this paper will point out. However, there have been examples of democracies fighting other democracies in wars, for instance the Kashmir conflicts between India and Pakistan, or in more modern history the 2006 Lebanon War and the five-day war between Georgia and Russia in 2008.
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Relationships and Family, Jawaharlal Nehru University (School of International Studies), course: Ph.D, language: English, abstract: The socially constructed gender roles which rooted in Indiäs socio structural set upinternalizes further the sense of gender inequality or gender bias and accepted it as¿Norm¿. This gender inequality manifests across social, economic and political domainof Indian society in form of preference of boy child over a girl child, falling sex ratio, lack of participation of women in decision making process, lack of control of womenover power structure in society. This further results in to domestic violence, sexualharassment, rape, molestation and may more crimes. There have been many gender equality measures taken place at policy level in order toreduce gender discrimination since independence. However, even after 65 years ofindependence India is still burning with gender discrimination at all levels. The reasonbehind this gender bias has been the fact that the gender equality measures are mostlyoriented towards women and sought to achieve gender equality through positive actionor economic opportunity for women only. This paper therefore, attempts to analyze the new gender equality measure namely thegender-mainstreaming strategy as a way to reduce this gender discrimination. Thepaper dwells into addressing three questions: How gender-mainstreaming strategycould be a better way to eliminate this gender bias? How is it different from othergender equality measures? and What results it could yield in the process of itsimplementation? Therefore the objective of the paper is to study how the sociallyconstructed gender roles result into gender discrimination in society and how thisdiscrimination can be removed through bringing changes in mindset of people andsociety at large with the help of gender-mainstreaming strategy.
