Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: A+, , course: Literary History and Theory, language: English, abstract: Published in 1968 "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick, the novel is set in a post-apocalyptic near-future America, which is falling apart, after a nuclear war called World War Terminus. Animals are almost extinct and keeping and owning animals have become an obsession for the remaining society. The worst thing a human can do is to harm an animal or to feel nothing at the idea of harming an animal. Thus caring for an animal has become symbol of one's humanity. However, because genuine animals are extremely expensive very few people can afford them and so most people are forced towards the much cheaper electric animals to keep up the pretence. To own a real animal is a sign of distinction and prestige. Before the story's beginning Deckard owned a genuine sheep, but it died, and Deckard had to replace it with an electric one. Deckard's electric sheep leaves him discontent as he yearns for the prestige that would come with the ownership of a real animal. The novel is arguably as influential and relevant today as when it came out. Its social commentary and critique of a twenty-first century America in the grip of soul-crushing hyper-capitalism can be said to be poignant still. The works of Philip K. Dick and, in particular, Do Androids Dream has attracted a small army of scholars and theorist who have applied everything from psychoanalytical criticism to postmodernism. However, a Marxist criticism has not been applied to Do Androids Dream so far. Such a reading is the focus of this paper, as I find that there are several reference to Marxist theory. Throughout the novel, Dick provides a profound social commentary through the vision of a near-future dystopian society. Dick vividly demonstrates how consumerism and capitalism can create a society loaded with socialist elements, even in a world that has suffered nuclear war. Through Deckard who contemplates his place in society via his disdain of his electric sheep, Dick forces the reader to consider the importance of material possessions and how they can affect social status. One would assume that material things would have less significance in a world that has suffered a nuclear holocaust, however, Do Androids Dream shows the opposite; namely, a scenario where one's possessions in society are of the utmost importance. To illustrate how a dystopian society would still hold material possessions in such high regard, Dick embeds numerous Marxist elements into his work as h

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: AA, Middle east technical university (Department of International Relations), course: Security Studies, language: English, abstract: The paper aims to present a probable humanitarian intervention as framework of human security. It objectifies humanitarian intervention as an element that will make human security autonomous but not separate nor fully independent from non-traditional security. Several literatures confuses the two terms as synonymous with each other, where others differentiated them explicitly. Thus the essay will address the ambiguity of both conceptions and discuss humanitarian intervention not as a different concept from human security but argues that it may be part and parcel of it, and in fact a possible framework to explain the paradigm of human security autonomous to non-traditional security. This contribution aspires for a sound, simple yet clear and unambiguous interpretation of human security to the evolving field of security especially as a sub-discipline of International Relations. In addition, it will also contend that there is a considerable middle way for both human security and non-traditional security in meeting a tangency point, and that is, a re-conceptualized version of human rights.

Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,0, University of Freiburg (Englisches Seminar), course: HS: Short Fiction, language: English, abstract: Darkness. Everywhere I look, darkness. Listen. Can you hear the sound of this gorgeous girl? Listen to her ¿click ¿ cluck, click ¿ cluck¿. Steady like my clock at home, ¿tick ¿ tuck, click ¿ cluck¿, forwarded from the narrow alleys. My imagination runs wild. By analysing the sound of her steps I can paint a picture in my mind. She seems to be a very elegant comely person the way she uses to walk in her high heels. The same swinging rhythm yoüll find on the catwalks. The little pause between her ¿click ¿ cluck¿ tells me something about her size. She has to be tall but still very graceful the way she conquers the cobbled pavement. What is she up to? Why is she disturbing the silence of the night? It¿s 4 öclock in the morning. There are better times being awake. I decide to walk back home and to leave my Mystery to the dark - knowing we probably won¿t share the night together. Back home I try to get some sleep. These sleeping pills stacked on my bed table are very helpful friends. Every night I step into the boxing ring with the chemical industry to get knocked-out by these little cocktails in the shape of a pill. It¿s been almost two years ago now, since I last saw my wife. Maybe this mysterious woman reminded me of her. I don¿t really know. She sounded so familiar...

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, RWTH Aachen University (Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Romanistik), course: Modern and Contemporary American Poetry, language: English, abstract: The current President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, was one of the few, who, in his inauguration ceremony in January 2009, had a poet read an inaugural poem. This delightful tradition that had only been included by three presidents before but that in many ways supports and promotes the art of contemporary American poets was kept alive by Elizabeth Alexander, one of the best-known and most successful recent African-American women poets. Her Praise Song For The Day, despite some sporadic criticism, was a suitable and thoughtful composition for this occasion and it was then that I heard for the first time of Elizabeth Alexander, an African-American poet. Her work and background fascinated me especially because she is a contemporary and her work is so recent and still going on. Therefore, I decided to examine four of her poems in the term paper at hand: Emancipation, Ars Poetica #28: African Leave-Taking Disorder, Race and Ars Poetica #92: Marcus Garvey on Elocution.During my research I had to learn that sadly, there is a significant lack of research and literature on this and other contemporary authors and therefore, this term paper largely consists of my own findings regarding the poems.Due to the reason that her personal background and her life have influenced the poems to a notable extent, I will start off with a short biographical section on Elizabeth Alexander herself and point out further biographical traits while interpreting the poems in their respective chapters. I will finally summarize my findings and present my personal conclusion as regards her way of tackling her topics and her art of writing.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Miscellaneous, grade: 2, Loughborough University (Politics, International Relations and European Studies), course: Federalism in Theory and Practice, language: English, abstract: Austria can be often found in enumerations of federal states in Europe just on the side of Switzerland and Germany but is Austria a real federal state or just a decentralized state?¿Austria is a federal state. The Federal State is composed of the autonomous Länder of Bur-genland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tirol, Vorarlberg and Vienna. The Federal territory comprises the territories of the Federal Länder.¿ (Article 2 and 3, Austrian federal constitutional law). With these articles it can be seen that the Austrian constitution clearly identifies Austria as a federal state but if you take a closer look at this constitution the question will occur if the Federal State of Austria does suffer from a lack of federalism. In the first part of the essay I will explain the development of federalism beginning with the end of the monarchy in 1918. The second part will be an explanation of how federalism is supposed to work in this country and the third part will be dedicated to the efforts of reforming and renew the Austrian system of federalism.

Scientific Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Region: Middle and South America, , language: English, abstract: The contemporary Venezuelan political system is observed through Luhmann¿s social theory as analytical framework, following the systemic distinction between semantics and social structure. Semantically, the discourse of twenty-first century socialism stands out, promising not only better opportunities for the poor but also a new world order. Semantics of this kind works as a natural self-description identifying people with their leader. Tautological self-descriptions are typical of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes. From a socio-structural standpoint the Venezuelan political system is characterised by the inflation of power and money, causing the state to grow out of control as well as public expenditure. As oil prices increased the Bolivarian revolution could afford ambitious national and continental projects, but as the energy market became flooded with cheaper oil, the scarcity of dollars is choking not only Venezueläs economy but the government¿s legitimacy as well.
