Dans cette noirceur bien connue suscitée par la première guerre mondiale, elles vivront des expériences troublantes et éprouvantes mais aussi parfois réjouissantes, qui viendront apaiser pour un temps les peines rencontrées. Les amitiés, les rencontres avec les populations locales seront bien souvent fortuites, brutalement mis à mal par les départs soudains selon les ordres de mission. Sans être exhaustif, ce livre présente, sous la forme du roman, ce que pouvait vivre ce personnel féminin dans un milieu déjà très éprouvant pour les combattants. Selon des témoignages réels, ces femmes ne se voyaient pas comme des héroïnes, bien que les décisions qu'elles prenaient et les difficultés qu'elles surpassaient les révéler en tant que telles. En marchant avec elles à travers ce récit, nous les accompagnons dans leur périple et nous essayons de comprendre ce qu'elles ont vécu. Nous soulevons aussi le voile de l'inconnu en témoignant de leur audace, leur discrétion, leur intimité, leur sensibilité et de leur compréhension de la guerre. C'est la première fois dans l'histoire de l'humanité que des femmes contribuent activement aussi prêt des combats. Grâce à cette participation, il fût reconnu que l'on ne pourrait plus dorénavant se passer d'elles dans ce milieu militaire exclusivement masculin.
