This wide-ranging collection of academic essays examines the various undertakings by modern intellectuals and ideologues in the process of propaganda and political debate. Matthew Feldman calls attention to the substantial role played in post-Great War Europe and the US by religions¿both familiar monotheisms like Christianity and secular ¿political faiths¿¿over the last century of upheaval and revolutionary change. While the first part considers Ezra Pound as a case study in fascist ¿conversion¿ in Mussolini¿s Italy, leading to extensive propaganda, the second half examines other fascist ideologues like Martin Heidegger to fascist murderer Anders Behring Breivik, before turning to other leading ideologies in modern Europe and the US, communism and liberalism, covering key figures from Thomas Merton and Albert Camus to the Russian Constructionists and Samuel Beckett, with especial focus on the subjects of modern warfare, political terrorism, and genocide, ranging from Stalinist gulags to the war in Iraq. With thought-provoking discussion of the interplay between belief and modern politics as understood by familiar intellectual voices, this volume will be of interest to scholars and general readers alike.
Helmut Meier's study of pro- and anti-slavery texts from 1784-1825 focuses on understanding the distinct image of Africans in the British debate on the slave trade and slavery as such. Starting from the premise that, at the threshold from the early to the late modern period, the distinct image of Africans as slaves was instrumental in universalizing a Eurocentric concept of capitalist wage labor both at the colonial centres and margins, Meier argues that, by portraying African slaves as suffering wretches, especially anti-slavery texts created colonial Others in an indistinct zone between inclusion and exclusion from humanity. The discourse on slavery thus constructs African slaves as mimetic Others which could subsequently become the objects of a discourse of colonial reform and 'betterment'.
The theory of capital structure is one of the most exciting and complex topics in corporate finance. After many years of debate it is still extremely difficult to provide a conclusive answer to the question which capital structure maximises the value of a company and what factors determine the optimal mix of debt and equity capital. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to capital structure theory and investigates its practical relevance in the German market. The main objectives are to explore the link between capital structure theory and corporate practice and to test determinants of capital structure choice empirically. The book has been written for students, researchers, and academics, but also for practitioners seeking empirical evidence of capital structure theory and an empirical model that can be used to estimate the optimal level of debt for an individual company in relation to an existing industry optimum.
In this stunning biography, Josette Baer re-traces the eventful life of the Slovak politician Vavro Srobár, the principal figure in the implementation of Czechoslovak democracy in Slovakia. Spanning from his student days and his fight for Slovak civil rights in Upper Hungary via his ministerial positions during the First Czechoslovak Republic to his active resistance against German fascism, Baer's research paints a most comprehensive picture.Based on rich archive material available to the English-reading public for the first time, Baer shows how Srobár's political thought and activities shaped the turbulent history of Czechoslovakia in the first half of the 20th century. Offering unique insights into the political past of a country whose history remains largely under-researched, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in the region.
Flat-rate pricing for services is becoming more and more popular. At the same time, the occurrence of a flat-rate bias increases as well: Many customers choose flat-rate pricing even if pay-per-use pricing would have been less expensive for them. Although the degree of flat-rate bias varies, until now, no study has analyzed service characteristics that might influence its extent. In five studies combining three different approaches, Fabian Uhrich shows that customers' consumption goals with regard to a service have substantial impacts on their flat-rate choices: Consuming services to attain hedonic gratification leads to a significantly higher flat-rate bias than using services to fulfill utilitarian needs. The more hedonic a service, the higher the taxi-meter, insurance, and overestimation effects. However, more utilitarian value has no significant impact on the flat-rate bias. Thus, by increasing hedonic perceptions of their services, service providers could gain more flat-rate contract customers. In a subsequent step, Uhrich investigates the consequences of a flat-rate bias on customer loyalty. Whereas prior research has found no negative impact of flat-rate bias on customer loyalty, Uhrich's study provides a more differentiated perspective. A survival analysis of two-year transactional data of 21,490 Internet service provider customers reveals that flat-rate bias has a negative effect on churn but not on tariff switching. The expected lifetime of a flat-rate bias customer contract decreases with every overspent Euro by about 1 percent. The relationship between flat-rate bias and the Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) is inversely U-shaped. Low degrees of flat-rate bias increase the CLV while high degrees can reverse this effect. The results of an experimental survey among mobile telephony customers explain these discrepancies to prior findings by showing that the competitive position of a service provider moderates the consequences of flat-rate bias. While low-cost service providers only experience increased tariff switching, premium providers are confronted with an increased churn risk.Managers of premium service providers are therefore advised to carefully evaluate reactions of their flat-rate bias customer base and proactively manage customers with strong flat-rate bias. Low-cost providers, however, have no need for action and can benefit from flat-rates without the danger of churn. They should leverage the positive impact of service ,hedonization' on the flat-rate bias to increase profits.
What is the role of citizens in urban development decision-making processes? In answer of this globally relevant question, Aline Delatte offers a comprehensive analysis of urban renewal programs in Berlin which aim to strengthen collaborative planning between public authorities and civil society. Based on the case study of the federal urban development program Aktives Stadtzentrum Turmstraße, Delatte distinguishes two types of participation: Citizen participation in a time-limited and issue-oriented 'top-down' participatory process; and citizen-representative involvement within local urban governance on an ongoing basis. Highlighting the drivers and barriers of participatory processes, her insights aim to strengthen citizen involvement towards a more participatory and democratic planning process. Uncovering valuable lessons to be learnt for the implementation of local participation in European cities, this timely book helps untangle the complexities of local governance involving administrations, civil society, and urban planners.
Publically available external pharmacovigilance databases, such as the American FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) and the VigiBase database of the Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC), are currently not obligatorily taken into account by the pharmaceutical product manufacturers regarding potential drug safety signals. The value of this information on adverse events that is revealed in these databases is well acknowledged by product experts. These external data sources are now being evaluated for their suitability to at least support signal verification for signals which have been detected within a pharmaceutical company. The appropriate software tools needed to support the integration of this information into the commonly used statistical methods of signal detection have been developed. In his study, Denny Lorenz evaluates the benefit of the reports that the market leading software 'Empirica Signal' generates for common questions during the signal verification process. The major external databases and statistical methods are described and structurally assessed. Besides the selection of reports, contrary opinions on the hierarchy levels of drug and event on which the statistical scores are calculated, are discussed. The study demonstrates that the decision on these levels and the depths of the external analyses itself is a trade-off between scientific ambitions and the limits of time and money that companies are willing to invest in this endeavor.
The book "Analytical functions of Matrices" continues the series "Modern Mathematics for Engineers". This project is addressed to upper-course university students in Mathematics specialties, to graduate students, and to researchers who apply Mathematics in different spheres. The project team was inspired by the positive experience of the researchers of the University of California who published the monograph "Modern Mathematics for Engineers" in 1956. The impulse for starting the Project "Modern Mathematics for Engineers" was the fact that 2008 was announced "The Year of Mathematics in Germany".
