Since its first edition in 1990, this has become the standard reference book on assessment in Recreational Therapy. As with the earlier editions, the purpose of this book is to provide both the therapist and the student with specific, critical information about the assessment process, specific tools, and specific standards related to assessment. The information on national assessments, such as the RAI/MDS for long-term care, is especially important to therapists. The fourth edition has 726 pages with five new assessments and updated information on all national and international standards. This book is used in over fifty colleges and nine different countries!

Recreational Therapy for Specific Diagnoses and Conditions offers detailed descriptions of 39 diagnoses and conditions that are treated by recreational therapists. Each diagnosis chapter has a description of the diagnosis or condition, including the incidence or prevalence and the ages most affected. This is followed by the causes of the condition; social, emotional, and bodily systems affected; secondary problems that may be found; and information about the patient's prognosis. The next section of the chapter is devoted to the assessment process for the whole treatment team and, in more detail, what the recreational therapist must do to assess the status of the patient. Specific assessment tools and connections to the categories of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health are provided.

The decision to undergo a total hip replacement can sometimes take years to make, but having a hip replacement can change a person's life. Many questions surface whenever someone is faced with a major surgery, optional or otherwise. This book answers these questions and gives useful and relevant information that will assist not only with the decision to have the joint replacement, but also with recovery afterwards. From choosing an orthopedic surgeon to the importance of exercise, this book covers all the major issues and topics regarding a total hip replacement. Deciding to have surgery is a very personal and individual choice. Many factors play into the decision, including age, general health, lifestyle, limitations from hip pain, and individual personalities. Taking this guide along on a total hip replacement journey will help tremendously in reaching the goal of being functional and pain free again.

There are four great medical dictionaries, but they do not cover therapy issues as well as Idyll Arbor's Therapy Dictionary. While we realize that we have a long way to go to be as complete in terms of number of entries and coverage of medical terms, there are issues of therapy where our definitions are far more informative and complete. We believe that we are the best therapy dictionary available today. For example, see our definitions for beds and support surfaces. Considerations that really make a difference for therapeutic treatment are covered there in ways that none of the medical dictionaries attempt. Check the definition of mental retardation for the depth of information that is vital to a therapist who is providing treatment. There are many other examples of definitions that include implications for functional ability, emotional health, and therapy interventions, which cannot be found in any of the medical dictionaries. The book also contains extensive cross-referencing to help the reader better understand the meanings of words. There are six appendices in the book including medical abbreviations, units of measure, root word analytical list, miscellaneous medical symbols, Greek alphabet, and growth and development theories. We don't think that Idyll Arbor's Therapy Dictionary can replace any of the current medical dictionaries, but we think that it deserves a place on the shelf beside them.
