Modern Irrigation Technologies reviews the experience of smallholders with irrigation technologies in a range of diverse conditions in many different countries. Some people argue that modern irrigation technologies are the key to increased food production. However, projects introducing modern irrigation technologies in the developing world have often failed because the irrigation hardware, which has been developed for high-technology commercial agriculture, cannot be easily adapted for the use of the smallholder. The author identifies the pre-conditions relating to water availability, institutional support and economic opportunity that must be satisfied before smallholders in developing countries can adopt irrigation methods and benefit from them. The circumstances in which modern technologies were introduced are identified, and the relative success or otherwise of the initiatives are summarized. The book also contains a practical review of the range of irrigation hardware that is available and indicates the types of equipment that are more likely to meet the requirements of the smallholder sector. G.A.Cornish is an irrigation engineer with wide experience of technology transfer and staff training on irrigation schemes in sub-Saharan Africa and south and southeast Asia. He currently works at the Overseas Development Unit of HR Wallingford, UK. Modern Irrigation Technologies will be an invaluable guide to project workers, planners and smallholders involved in planning and designing irrigation projects.

  • - Replicating a poverty reduction model in India, Nepal and Vietnam

    252,95 kr.

Inspired by the enormous success of the Grameen Bank in providing financial assistance to the poorest of the poor, four individuals - a central banker, an appropriate-technology NGO organizer, a professor of international relations and a top-level communist official - each sought to replicate and adapt the model elsewhere in Asia. By giving an unvarnished account of the problems encountered in the crucial first years of establishing a credit programme, the book alerts potential microcredit practitioners to the pitfalls and obstacles likely to be encountered in setting up a program. The book provides the opportunity to analyse the process of creating a successful credit program and draws from the experience of these four projects some lessons in best practice.

    507,95 kr.

Mountain areas of developing countries face rapid increases in population pressure as well as degradation of the environment and production resource base, and there are unmistakable symptoms of the emerging unsustainability of current patterns of resource use and production practices. This situation is both a cause for concern and a reason for reappraisal of conventional development approaches to mountain areas in general, and mountain agriculture in particular. The book aims to stimulate fresh thinking on development goals and strategies in mountain regions. This volume contains Chapters 1 to 15 and considers the following aspects: mountain agricultural development strategies, farmers'' response to development efforts, farming-forestry-livestock linkages, biological diversity, agro-ecosystems, and geographic information systems.

    af Ian Carruthers
    511,95 kr.

Tools for Agriculture is a guide to small-scale farming equipment which offers information to smallholder farmers, development workers, and manufacturers all over the world. This revised and updated fourth edition, appearing 25 years after ITDG''s original published guide to appropriate equipment, "Tools for Progress", is the first to be produced from a computer database, compiled jointlyw ith GRET to enable systematic and continuous updating. Information has been selected from more than 1200 manufacturers in over 90 countries, and is presented here in ten sections for ease of reference. Each subject area - field power, soil preparation, crop protection - is introduced by a specialist who sets the range of available tools, implements and machines against a background of good farming practice, and the factors to weigh up when making a choice. The theme of effective choice is also considered in the main introduction along with an analysis of why some mechanization projects are more successful than others and how they could be improved. Also included are sources of further information and useful indexes of manufacturers and equipment.
